  • The purpose of this study was to examine Korean-Chinese parent-child relationship values through Korean proverbs on parent-child relationships. A total of 233 Korean-Chinese who reside in Yungil, China participated in this study. The participants were recruited through Korean-Chinese preschools and elementary schools. They completed a questionnaire which asked to what extent they agreed or disagreed with Korean proverbs. The items were classified into four categories: filial piety (duty), child-care and education, childrearing practices, and traditional son preference (and daughter discrimination). The results showed that, although the participants highly agreed to the meaning of the proverbs, they seldom used Korean proverbs in their daily lives. The findings concluded that the participants generally manifested a traditional value of filial piety or duty. Also, the findings showed that more fathers acclaimed the value of traditional son preference (and daughter discrimination) than mothers. Finally, the degree of familiarity with Korean culture was found to be a major factor in explaining differences in levels of agreement or disagreement to the proverbs. Since Korean-Chinese ethnic minority groups in China tend to adhere to traditional Korean values, they might encounter more challenges assimilating into the mainstream Chinese culture.

  • The combination of animals has been developed in each of the cultural spheres as a method of metaphor and symbolism of the cultural code. However, its symbolism is not a fixed constant, but a variable and relative constant. This work focused on its features in comparison with East Asian cultural spheres comedic stories and proverbs. Consequently, several features were identified. First, the combinations of animals in similar comedic stories and proverbs among Korea, Japan and China show a difference in point of view. Korean focuses on the difference of the two animals, but Chinese and Japanese focus on the differences in value and level. Second, the method of anthropomorphization is relatively more developed in China and Japan than Korea. The combinations of animals of Chinese comedic stories and proverbs particularly in the field of anthropomorphization, are most focused on age and sex of the animal. The animal's age or sex remains mostly undetermined in Korean animal's proverbs, unlike Chinese proverbs. On the other hand, two animals in Japanese comedic stories and proverbs are usually of the male and female gender from. Third, the combinations of animals of Chinese and Japanese focus on the animal's body and its characteristics of action. Chinese and Japanese combine the characteristics of the two animal's bodies and actions. This feature apparently caused the resultant combinations of the animal's body parts, for example, the Dragon. Understanding of the combinations of two animals is a good portal into the features of East Asian culture sphere.

  • At old age, as people depend on superficial clues when they interpret the overall context of communication, their ability to understand connotative and figurative words and articles could deteriorate. In this study, 50 normal young(junior) people and normal old(senior) people were made to perform a task to understand similes, metaphors, idioms, and proverbs, the sub-areas of figurative language. For the task, participants were made to understand a paragraph consisting of several sentences and select a correct answer representing appropriate figurative language. As a result of the analysis, first, old people showed a lower level of performance than young people in all the sub-areas of figurative language. Second, in understanding idiomatic words and proverbs, old people showed a lower level of performance due to unfamiliarity. Third, for the types of wrong answers, old people mostly understood only the literal meanings in all the sub-areas of figurative language. Due to aging, old people come to have a lowered level of the pragmatic language ability, reasoning ability, and inhibiting ability to efficiently communicate with others considering certain situations and contexts. Thus, old people could have difficulties in understanding inner meanings from others in daily communication.

  • This paper is a study on the recognition of Korean proverb using neural network and Markov model. The neural network uses, at the stage of training neurons, features such as the rate of zero crossing, short-term energy and PLP-Cepstrum, covering a time of 300ms long. Markov models were generated by the recognized phoneme strings. The recognition of words and proverbs using Markov models have been carried out. Experimental results show that phoneme and word recognition rates are 81. 2%, 94.0% respectively for Korean proverb recognition experiments.

  • This study was performed to approach Korean food proverbs from the stance of food ethics. Both modern principles and traditional principles of food ethics were applied to select proverbs. The modern principles include a respect for life, justice, environmental preservation, and the priority of safety. The traditional principles were longevity and good health, poverty (escaping) and wealth (pursuing), eating luck and fortune, priority of food, virtue, and taste and quality (economics). All the principles except environmental preservation and the priority of safety have adequate food proverbs, since environmental disruption and food safety were not serious issues in the past.
