In this study, we investigated the effects of analogy-generating in small group in elementary science-gifted education upon the types and the mapping errors of student-generated analogies, and the perceptions of the instruction. Fifth graders (N=37) at two science-gifted classes in two elementary schools were selected and assigned to individualistic analogygenerating (IA, n=19) and pair analogy-generating (PA, n=18) groups. After the students of each group performed the experiment and were taught about 'saturated solution' concept in the first class, they administered the test on the self-generating analogies on the concept in the second class. The students in the PA group also administered the test on perceptions of analogy-generating in small group and some of them were interviewed deeply. The results revealed that the students in the PA group made more verbal/pictorial, structural/functional, enriched, and higher systematic analogies than those in the IA group. However, there were little difference between the two groups in the subcategories of artificiality (artificial and everyday) and abstraction (abstract and concrete). The students in the PA group fewer mapping errors than those in the IA group. Many students in PA group perceived the analogy-generating in small group positively upon various cognitive and motivational aspects. However, they also pointed a few disadvantages of the activity. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.
In the 21C information-based society, there is an increasing demand for emphasizing communication in mathematics education. Therefore the purpose of this study was to research how properties of communication among small group members varied by mathematical problem types. 8 fourth-graders with different academic achievements in a classroom were divided into two heterogenous small groups, four children in each group, in order to carry out a descriptive and interpretive case study. 4 types of problems were developed in the concepts and the operations of fractions and decimals. Each group solved four types of problems five times, the process of which was recorded and copied by a camcorder for analysis, among with personal and group activity journals and the researcher's observations. The following results have been drawn from this study. First, students showed simple mathematical communication in conceptual or procedural problems which require the low level of cognitive demand. However, they made high participation in mathematical communication for atypical problems. Second, even participation by group members was found for all of types of problems. However, there was active communication in the form of error revision and complementation in atypical problems. Third, natural or receptive agreement types with the mathematical agreement process were mainly found for conceptual or procedural problems. But there were various types of agreement, including receptive, disputable, and refined agreement in atypical problems.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the patterns and features of interaction in teacher interviewing with high school students' small group for biology learning. The interactions in variety between the students and between the students and the teacher were made as the interviews with each small group were repeated to feedback for biology learning. The patterns of interaction were categorized into four types by interactive level of interaction among group members and a teacher: leader representation without interaction among students and the teacher(LR, leader representation), interaction among a part of students and the teacher(PSI, partial students interaction), active interaction among students inside the group, but only interaction between the teacher and the leader student(SAI, students active interaction), and interaction between all of the students and the teacher(teacher-students active interaction). Even though complex patterns of interactions were made among the students at the initial stage of insufficient understanding on the study concept, the simple interaction processes were shown as students had gradually completed the understanding on the concept. It was displayed that the interaction in the small group for biology study provides the opportunity to confirm and understand the concept to the students who were poor at the understanding on the concept, and it can influence positively on the mutual creation of study concept.
There has been an amounting interest and subjects in gifted education in recent years as a number of studies dealt with the development of gifted education programs. However, earth science area remained as a low profile in developing educational programs and materials that meet the varying curiosities and needs of gifted students with a focus on their characteristic development. This study developed a small group-based active-cooperative learning program in middle school to investigate the effects of the program in terms of the creative problem solving ability in science and learning attitude of the gifted students. Then the study examined the conceptions of the students after the implementation of the small group-based active-cooperative learning program. Findings of the study showed that there was a significant increase in participated gifted students' creative problem solving skills and their learning attitude. In addition, the small group-based active-cooperative learning program apparently increased the participants' interests, satisfaction, and participation toward the instruction, and significantly influenced their affective domain. It implies that these findings were not caused by the lectures from the teachers, but by the variety of activities in which the gifted students discussed and debated with the classmates to derive a positive reciprocal action. In conclusion, a small group-based active-cooperative learning program promoted a reciprocal action among all the students who participated in a small group by sharing their opinions and respecting each other.

This study aims to identify unique small group norms and their influence on the process of constructing a scientific model. We developed instructional materials for the construction of a model of blood flow in the heart and conducted research on eighth-grade students from one middle school. We randomly selected 10 small groups, and videotaped and recorded their dialogues and behaviors. The data was categorized according to the types of interaction and then analyzed to investigate the characteristics of group norms and models in one or two representative groups for each type. The results show that the types of interaction, the quality of the group models, and the group norms were different in each group. Even though one teacher guided students through the same task in the inquiry context, each group revealed different patterns of discourse and behavior, which were based on norms of cognitive responsibility, the need for justification, participation, and membership. With the exception of one group, there was little cognitive responsibility and justification for students' opinions. Ultimately, these norms influenced the model construction of small groups. A group that forms norms to encourage the active participation and justify members' opinions with cognitive responsibility was encouraged to do inferential thinking and construct a group model close to the target model. This study has instructional implications for the establishment of a classroom environment that facilitates learning through small group activities.
Small group learning is an educational approach to allow students to solve the problems and to achieve a common goal. Especially, small group learning in science education is one of the most important educational approaches and effective to ensure understanding of a topic. Small group learning consisting of three students in science education maximize student understanding and learning efficiency. However, It is reported that the effects of small group learning on achievement show different results, corresponding to different grouping methods(homogeneous/heterogeneous). This study investigated the effects of grouping method on difference of ecological niche of photosynthesis concepts. To achieve this, 1107 7th students were composed of homogeneous and heterogeneous groups classified into top, middle, and bottom levels. The photosynthesis units were divided into four categories: the photosynthesizing place, the substances of photosynthesis, required materials for the photosynthesizing, and environmental factors affecting photosynthesis. A questionnaire was composed by selecting concepts having a frequency of 4% or more based on prior studies on the change of the ecological status of photosynthesis. The questionnaire was scored in terms of relativity and understanding on each of the proposed concepts in the four categories. The result of this study is as set forth below. 1) There was an enhancement of learning the concept of science in small group classes consisting of 3 students. 2) To enhance the average upon composing of a group, it is proposed that the group should be formed homogeneously, and to reduce the deviation between the members, it is proposed that the group should be formed heterogeneously. Through this study, it is expected that specific studies verifying the difference or effect on the duplicity of results are conducted based on the composition of groups.

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of small group discussion on elementary students' science writing. In this study, four 6th grade students were chosen from an elementary school in Seoul. Students were involved in eight science writing classes and the contents of a small group discussion and interactions were recorded and observed. Students' science works were collected and analysed based on three domains: scientific thinking, logic and originality. The result of this study showed that the contents of a small group discussion greatly affected the scientific thinking domain. A low-achieving student received lots of help from a high-achieving student. It was easy to improve in the logic domain through the science writing classes. Average students got good grades in an originality domain when the subject was related to their real life. A small group discussion would have an effect on science writing ability positively if the students acquired proper guidance on the procedure and manner of discussion. The science writing lesson would be more effective if the learning group was organized homogeneously in the aspects of intelligence achievement and interpersonal relationships.
The method of being composed of small groups has a strong influence on mathematics and cooperative learning and therefore, the group classification should be made in a way of considering not only a learner's cognitive factor but also a affective factor in order to maximize the effects. In this research, we regarded personality as the important standard of the group classification for cooperative learning and tried to find out the influence on the mathematical attitude and achievement in mathematics by means of conducting mathematics and cooperative learning according to the personality types. In order to resolve this problem, we performed the cooperative learning of small group subject to the students at year 6 in an elementary school by making up a similar personality type of group and a different personality type of group through MMTIC examination, and also tried to find out any significant difference in terms of mathematical attitude and achievement in mathematics between two groups. The results obtained in this research are as follows; First, organizing groups in accordance with personality types did not affect on mathematical attitude. Although there were some positive opinions towards mathematics and cooperative learning, the both similar personality type of group and different personality type of group showed no significant difference in terms of mathematical attitude between two groups. Second, organizing groups in accordance with personality types showed positive effects on the achievement in mathematics. The similar personality type of group showed the better achievement in mathematics than the different personality type of group.
This study investigated differences in presence, immersion, and situational interest in small group learning using augmented reality, based on the degree of tool sharing. 84 eighth-grade students participated in small groups of four. Each group was randomly assigned to one of three environments based on marker and device sharing: the shared environment (shared marker and device usage), the mixed environment (shared marker and individual device usage), and the individual environment (individual marker and device usage). Small group learning using augmented reality was conducted for three class periods, focusing on the "Characteristics of Matter" unit. One-way ANOVA results for the dependent variables revealed that, compared to the shared environment, presence and situational interest were significantly higher in the mixed environment, while immersion and situational interest were significantly higher in the individual environment. MANOVA results for the sub-components of each dependent variable showed significant differences in realness for presence, antecedents and experiences for immersion, and instant enjoyment, novelty, and total interest for situational interest. Analysis of interviews and classroom observations indicated that students in shared and individual environments tended to use their devices individually when utilizing augmented reality. However, in mixed environments, students showed a tendency to use their devices collaboratively, leading to more active interactions. Based on these findings, environments for using tools to enhance the effectiveness of small group learning using augmented reality are discussed.
