  • Based on the close investigation of Lade elasto -plastic model, this study proposes a new elasto -plastic constitutive model for foundation composed of granular soils. The new model contains 1st stress invariant in plastic potential function as well as yield function, which is different from Lade original model. Both these functions called a correction function include a correction term. To validate the new analytical model, it was compered with some previous models. Comparison between the test results and numerical results using Lade and new model was carried out concerning Sacramento River sand, U.S.A and Backma River sand. The conclusion was obtained that more refined model well be deft.eloped throughout this research.

  • Since the generalized Hoek-Brown (GHB) function predicts the strength of the jointed rock mass in a systematic manner by use of GSI index, it is widely used in rock engineering practices. In this study, a series of 2D elasto-plastic FE analysis, which adopts the GHB criterion as a yield function, was carried out to investigate the radial convergence characteristics of circular tunnel excavated in the GHB rock mass. The effect of the plastic potential function on the elasto-plastic displacement was also examined. In the analysis, the wide range of both the $K(={\sigma}_h/{\sigma}_v)$ and GSI values are considered. For each K value, the variation of the ratio of sidewall displacement to roof displacement was calculated with varying GSI values and the obtained displacement patterns were analysed. The calculation results show that the displacement ratio significantly depends not only on the K value but also on the range of GSI value. In particular, for lower range of GSI value, the displacement ratio pattern calculated in the elasto-plastic regime is opposite to that predicted by the elasticity theory. In addition, the variation of the radial displacement ratio with GSI value for different types of plastic potential function showed similar trend.

  • In this study, a constitutive model which can describe the anisotropic and plastic behaviors of natural cohesive soils, was developed based on anisotropic bounding surface theory. The model was fomulated by the concepts of the improved anisotropic bounding surface function, nonassociated flow rule with new plastic potential function, anisotropic hardening rule, and new mapping rule governing the plastic behavior inside bounding sutraface. Comparing with the results of Ku consolidation and triaxial shearing tests, the predictions by the proposed model agree quite well with real soil responses.

  • This paper presents a new constitutive model for numerical modeling the shear behaviour of rough rock joints. The model incorporates the dilatancy of joints on the basis of elasto-plastic theory. Barton's empirical shear strength formular are adopted in the formulation process. The mobilized JRC concept is evoked to address the shear strength hardening and sofrening phenomena. The mobilized JRC in the pre- and post-peak range is approximated by assuming that the variation of JRC is a function of tangential plastic work. Discrete finite joint element is used to implement the proposed constitutive model. The model is validated by the numerical direct shear test on a single joint which is subjected to different boundary conditions. The test results are in good agreement with the experimental observations reported by other authors. The numerical tests also exhibit that the proposed model can simulate the salient features envisaged in the behaviour of rough rock joints.

  • The initiation and growth of microcracks or microvoids inside concrete results in the progressive degradation of concrete. This damage processing along processing along with plastic deformation is main cause of nonlinear behavior of concrete. In this study, a continuum damage model of concrete is developed for the analysis of the nonlinear behavior of concrete due to damage and elasto-plastic deformation. Anisotropic damage tensor is used to describe the anisotropy of concrete and hypothesis of equivalent elastic energy is used to define the effective elastic tensor. The damage model including the damage evolution law and constitutive equation is derived with damage variable and damage surface which is defined by damage energy release rate by using the Helmholtz free energy and dissipation potential based on the thermodynamic principles. By adopting a typical plasticity model of concrete, plasticity of concrete is included to this model. Afinite element analysis program implemented with this model was developed and finite element analysis was performed for the analyses of concrete subjected to uniaxial and biaxial loadings. Comparison of the results of analysis with those of experiments and other models shows that the model successfully predicts the nonlinear behavior of concrete.

  • Concrete contains numerous microcracks initially. The growth and propagation of microcracks cause failure of concrete. These processings are termed as "damage". The concepts of the continuum damage mechanics are presented and the damage evolution law and constitutive equation are derived by using the Helmholz free energy and the dissipation potential by means of the thermodynamic principles. The constitutive equation includes the effects of elasticity, damage and plasticity of concrete. The proposed model successfully predicts the nonlinear behavior of concrete subject to monotonic uniaxial and biaxial loadings.

  • This study was performed a series of the isotropic compression-expansion tests and the drained triaxial tests with various the relative densities 40%, 60%, 80% and 95% for bottom ash. Using the tests results the characteristic of the parameters of Lade's single hardening constitutive model were investigated. The soil parameters Kur and n representing elastic behavior are not much affected by the change of the relative density. The other parameters such as failure criterion(m, ${\eta}_1$), hardening function(c, p) and plastic potential(${\psi}_2$, ${\mu}$) are in a positive linear relationship with the relative density. Since the soil parameters h and ${\alpha}$ representing yield function do not change much to the change of relative density and also closely related to failure criterion, they can be replaced by failure criterion ${\eta}_1$. We also observed that predicted values from the Lade's single hardening constitutive model were well consistent with the observed data.

  • This study proposed a new yield function considering the spacing ratio of the critical state to predict the undrained shear behavior of anisotropic field ground. We have suggested a nonassociated constitutive model that used a newly modified plastic potential function in order to apply the yield function of the modified Cam-Clay model to the anisotropic consolidation. In this paper, we predicted undrained shear behavior of the remolded weathered mudstone soils in Phohang isotorpically and anisotropically consolidated using the suggested model. To evaluate the reliability of proposed model, we predictied undrained shear behavior of Bankok Clay isotropically, nomally consolidated and Drammen Clay Ko consolidated. The predicted results are consistent with the observed behavior.

  • In this study, a series of the isotropic compression-expansion tests and the drained triaxial tests were performed on Pocheon granite soil with various the dry densities of $16.67kN/m^3$, $17.26kN/m^3$ and $17.65kN/m^3$. Using the tests results the characteristic of the parameters of Lade's single hardening constitutive model were investigated. The soil parameters such as kur and n related to elastic behavior, m and ${\eta}_1$ related to failure criterion, c and p related to hardening function and ${\psi}_2$ and ${\mu}$ related to plastic potential show in a positive linear relationship with the dry density. Since the soil parameters h and representing yield function do not change much to relative density and also are closely related to failure criterion, they can be replaced by failure criterion. We also observed that predicted values from the Lade's single hardening constitutive model were well consistent with the observed data.
