  • This study aims to seek the policies and the plans for the successful small business start-up through an exploratory study about the factors affecting the success rate of small business start-up. To measure the performance of the start-up business(sales revenue, net profit, and outcome expectancy), the characteristics of founders (experience, psychological characteristics) and the preparation of small business start-up were measured as independent variables and the self-efficacy was measured as a parameter. 427 small business owners were targeted and structured self-administered questionnaires were collected from them. For the data process, a multiple regression analysis by SPSS 18.0 was conducted. The findings demonstrated the experience in the same business, the need for achievement, the risk-taking propensity, the preparation period for business start-up had a significant effect on self-efficacy, and experience of failure and the ratio of net worth had a significant effect on sales revenue and net profit, and the locus of control had a significant effect on outcome expectancy through the self-efficacy, a parameter. It was also noted the self-efficacy of small business owners and the business performance varied depending on the characteristics of them and the preparation process of the business start-up. Based on the those findings, the theoretical and practical implications were discussed and the suggestions about the limits of the study, future policies and studies were made.

  • The pale chub (Zacco platypus) is a dominant species that migrates locally and inhabits in rivers in Korea. The fish movement at confluences or hydraulic connections is very important especially for the life of small fish as pale chub. If main stream and off-channel habitats are connected with culverts, they would restrict the fish movement due to the high flow velocities and low depths. In foreign conturies, design flow conditions of fish friendly culvert, including flood flow capacity and fish-passage flow capacity, were assigned. Installation of culvert fishways is one way to improve the fish-passing capacity of culverts. On the contrary, in Korea, the design flow of culvert contains only the flood flow capacity. The effect of the fish passage with offset baffles was tested with the fixed velocity method in an experimental flume. As a result, An occasion velocity 1.2m/s, proportional success of pale chubs pass is maximum 20% improve than without baffle flume for energy dissipate. Offset baffle fishway(baffle height 5cm) provides that resting areas and/or a continuous channel of low velocity water in culverts. Especially, short baffle areas are domain where the pale chubs pass. And, FLOW-3D, a three dimentional numerical model, was used in order to evaluate detailed hydraulic characteristics and application possibility in a culvert fishway design.

  • The chum salmon enhancement program in Korea started at Gowon in Hamgyeong nam-do in 1913 and the program has been more active since Yeongdong Inland Fisheries Research Institute was established at Yangyang in 1984. The major activities were the release of chum salmon fingerlings and the catch of adult chum salmon for artificial fertilization. The range of return rate to Korean waters was in $0.72{\sim}1.57%$ during 1990s, but it has declined seriously since 2000. To overcome the low return rate and enhance chum salmon resources in Korean waters, we must understand the mechanisms of mass mortality of chum salmon during their early life in rivers and coastal areas in conjuction with the fluctuation of return rates and climate. In addition, comprehensive and effective habitat protection and restoration policies will be needed.
