  • Baby boomers are the population group born between 1955 and 1974 in South Korea. They are the generation to grow up in the rural areas and it has been reported in the previous literature that a large part of baby boomers now hopes to return their hometowns after their retirement. The purpose of this study is to investigate factors that obstruct the baby boomers' residential relocation to their hometowns by in-depth interviews with three different types of baby boomers: returners, soon-to-be returner, and wanna-be returner. Findings of this study show that the reasons behind the hesitation to the migration may be grouped into four categories: concerns about insufficient jobs, lack of medical services, concerns about social relation network and poor cultural environment in their hometown.

  • The importance of the creative class has been emphasized as the industrial structure changes. However, there are only a few studies on gender wage difference in the creative class. The purpose of this study is to analyze the various factors influencing the gender wage gap in the creative class by using labor panel data. The results of this study are as follows: First, it was found that the wage of the male creative class is higher than the wage of the female creative class. Second, there were different factors affecting wages depending on the gender of the creative class. Third, female workers in the creative class suffer wage discrimination due to differences, but a larger part is due to gender discrimination. Fourth, compared to the non-creative classes, the gender wage gap of the creative classes was small. The gender gap caused by discrimination was the highest among the younger generation.

[1]. • This paper investigates the effect of retirement-related subjective expectations on the capital accumulation of the Korean baby-boom generation. Using the 1st, 2nd waves of the KLoSA (2006, 2008), we estimate the distributional effects with quantile regression. In addition, the endogeneity of the expectation variables is handled using the fixed effect model. The quantile regression results reveal that the schooling, gender and the number of children are important determinants, but their effects are heterogenous across quantiles to a significant margin. The expectations of the stronger bequest motives and longer lifespan turned out to lead to more capital accumulation. The expectation regarding the expanded role of government retirement support seemed to crowd out private savings for the baby boomers with the total assets over 0.7 percentile.

  • Socio-economic polarization in Korea partly due to recent globalization and industrial restructuring could reduce social mobility significantly through passing down educational achievement to one's children. Under the notion that residential segregation is geographical frame for the reproduction of educational inequality, this research investigates residential segregation by educational attainment and neighborhood disparity with a case study of Seoul. The statistical analyses employed local segregation measures such as Location Quotient and Local Moran's I and a variety of variables that reflect neighborhood characteristics. As a result, it found that there are sharp and clear contracts between low- and high-educational group concentrations/clusters particularly in terms of housing characteristics and educational facilities. This results provide some evidences that support the arguments about the causes of residential segregation by class in Korean Cities.

  • We empirically examine the validity of second generation endogenous growth theory suing 21 OECD countries' panel data(1981~2011). Due to non-stationarity in all variables, we test the cointegrated relationships strongly supporting the semi-endogenous growth model. In the estimation of total factor productivity growth function, the growth of domestic and foreign R&D investment levels statistically significantly affect total factor productivity growth. R&D intensity, however, has significant impacts on the total factor productivity growth only in a few models, and international technology gap also has positive impacts on GDP growth. Thus the semi-endogenous growth model is relatively supported while fully endogenous growth model is weakly and occasionally supported in OECD countries. The policy implication of supporting the semi-endogenous growth model is that the sustaining growth requires increasing R&D expenditures.

  • This study aims to examine the trend of research articles for the age of youth at 20s during 10 years through topic modeling and keyword network analysis. In results, 'incomes', 'program', 'business start-up', and 'culture' were selected as main keywords, and the research articles were classified into six topics, which were employment support services, values, unstable life, government support policies, religious views, and business start-up support services. Additionally, we found the youth at 20s had higher rate of efficacy for digital technology, pursued efficient consumption of digital information, showed meaningful and athetical patterns of consumption, tried to search for their identity, and showed realistic action in daily. Finally, we raised some questions for value gap among aging groups, inbalance of regional development, and income inequality and suggested long-term youth policies to solve fundamental problems of youth at 20s.

  • It is attempted here to explain change in welfare attitudes for two decades in 10 countries with the cohort effect, especially differences in societal values between generations. It was found that for the last 20 years pro-welfare attitudes of the public has been strengthened, on which the generation has impact, more by the cohort effect than by the age effect, and that the Millennials/Y-generation are the strongest supporters for the state welfare. Value-differences between cohorts, as a background factor for the cohort effect on welfare attitudes, are clear but show a kind of linear trend from the older to the younger cohorts. As for the cohort effect on welfare attitudes, it is expected, at least for the short-term future, in the direction toward supporting the expansion of the state welfare. Korean welfare attitudes show an exceptional pattern - preferring income inequality as incentives, and at the same time, the expansion of governmental welfare responsibility, which echoes recent arguments of contradictoriness and non-class-orientedness of Korean welfare attitudes. Especially, Korean Millennials/Y-G shows this contradictory welfare attitudes the most strongly, which is unique between 10 countries in this study, implying their fierce competition is being internalized. It is expected that the contradictoriness of Korean welfare attitudes may limit its possibility to back up welfare expansion in Korea.

  • This study aims to examine the factors influencing the satisfaction of life, digital information competency, digital information utilization, awareness of future knowledge and information technology, the need for knowledge and information technology, confidence in new technology, and attitude to middle and old people classified as vulnerable to digital information. For the research, raw data of the digital divide survey were used in 2019. Studies have shown that digital information utilization varies depending on the level of awareness of the future intelligence information society. Group with high awareness of the future intelligence information society showed high ability to use information in various fields. The more people recognize the need for future intelligent information technology as a factor that affects the satisfaction of life among middle and high-aged people, and the more confident and active their confidence and attitude toward new technology, the higher their satisfaction with life. It is believed that a policy focusing on digital information capabilities and utilization will be needed to actively respond to changes in the environment of middle and old people from the perspective of digital inclusion.
