  • Pear psylla, Caccopsylla pyricola (Homoptera: Psyllidae), is a serious insect pest in pear orchards. C. pyricola overwinters as adults under rough bark scales of pear trees. When the weather warms up in the spring, the overwintered adults become active, climb up to the tree branches, and inhabit on fruit twigs to lay eggs. This study was conducted to develop a forecasting model for the onset of upward-movement of overwintered C. pyricola adults to control them by timely spraying of petroleum oil. The adult population densities were observed under rough barks (B) and on fruit twigs (T) of pear trees. Relative upward-movement rates (R) were calculated as T/(B+T). Low threshold temperatures for the activation of overwintered C. pyricola adults were selected arbitrarily from 5 to $9^{\circ}C$ at a $1^{\circ}C$ interval. Then, the days (D) when daily maximum air temperatures were above each low threshold temperature were counted from 1 February until to the dates with R $\geq$ 0.8. The same methods were applied for the prediction of the first observation of eggs. The variation of coefficients (CV) for the mean Des were lowest with the low threshold temperature of $6^{\circ}C$. At this selected threshold temperature, the upward movement of C. pyricola adults occurred with 12 D and they started laying eggs with 25 D. In the field validation, the model outputs with the $6^{\circ}C$ threshold temperature reasonably well explained the observed data in Suwon and Cheonan in 2002. Practical usages of the model were also discussed.

  • Three Korean isolates of entomopathogenic nematodes, Steinernema carpocapsae KCTC 0981BP (ScK), S. glaseri Dongrae (SgD), and Heterorhabditis sp. KCTC 0991BP (HsK), were evaluated for the control of a turfgrass pest, Popillia quadriguttata. Three days after treatment, all nematodes showed high pathogenicity to adult P. quadriguttata with $97.5\%$ mortality by ScK, $90.8\%$ by HsK, and $80\%$ by SgD at the concentration of 900 infective juveniles per adult. Nematode attachment and infection rate to adult P. quadriguttata were various depending on nematode species and inoculation density. The rate of nematode attachment was $90.8\%$ in HsK, $90.6\%$ in SgD, and $35\%$ in ScK, resfectively at the concentration of 900 infective juveniles per adult. The infection rate that represents the rate of detected nematode from inside insect of body was $97.5\%$ in ScK, $ 80\%$ in both HsK and SgD at the 900 concentration of infected juveniles. The infection rate, however, was decreased to $27.5\%$ in ScK, $72.5\%$ in SgD, but no nematodes was detected in HsK at the concentration of 90 infective juveniles.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between depression and adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD) of college students. Collage students up to 350 people self-report survey was conducted using the Conners ADHD Rating Scale Korean version and Beck Depression Inventory. Adult ADHD symptoms prevalence was 5.1 % and the highest form of carelessness. Depression grade was $8.38{\pm}6.86$ points of college students and female students was higher than male students is depression grade, severe depression and modurate depressive symptoms were 2.1 %. Model of explanatory were slightly higher in 33.5%, adult ADHD affects depression and coexistence rate of adult ADHD symptoms and depressive symptoms was found to be 3.1%. Therefore, adult ADHD symptoms prevalence and depression of collage students seems to be relationship. Given the wide range of social and emotional problems due to adult ADHD seems necessary measures to establish a social dimension to adult ADHD.

  • The adzuki pod worm, Matsumuraeses phaseoli (Matsumura) is an insect pest that attacks the flowers and pods of Vigna angularis. The circadian rhythms of eclosion and mating, and the effects of age and antenna ablation on mating success, were investigated. With a photoperiodic regime of 16:8 (Light:Dark) h, most adult eclosion was observed within 4 h after lights-on. Most adult mating was observed during the scotophase, although some occurred within 2 h after lights-on. However, the adults did not copulate on the day of emergence. The mating rate increased with adult age: being higher in the 4-d-old adult pairs than pairs of lower age. Most of the antennectomized males or females did not copulate with normal individuals of the opposite sex.

  • In order to effectively control the Ricania sp., we investigated the light response to adults and developed an adult capturing device using light with superior attractiveness. The preference among six light sources such as daylight color, green, etc. for the Ricania sp. adult was favored with daylight color 97 > black 79 = red 79 = blue 79 > green 24 > yellow 13. We have developed an adult catching device using the most preferred daylight colors and behavioral habits of the Ricania sp.. The capture device consisted of two daylight compact lamps (30W, 20W), a yellow plate, and a catcher using water, and caught about 700 individuals a day. The capturing device has a large amount of capturing because adult is activity at high nighttime temperatures, but the capturing amount decreased significantly when the temperature dropped below 23℃. More than 85% of the Ricania sp. adults were trapped for 3 hours from 19:00 to 23:00. Therefore, it is considered that the adult capturing device for the control of Ricania sp. is used from mid July to late August when the night temperature is over 23℃, and lights up from 19:00 to 23:00.

  • We provided diagnostic characters of the adult and larval stages of two co-inhabiting species of ephemerid burrowing mayflies, Ephemera orientalis and E. sachalinensis (new record to South Korea) (Ephemeroptera: Ephemeridae), in Korean streams. E. sachalinensis (mean${\pm}$sd body length male adult 18.44${\pm}$0.70 mm, female adult 21.46${\pm}$0.45 mm) is larger in body length than E. orientalis (male adult 13.92${\pm}$0.04 mm, female adult 15.27 ${\pm}$ 0.48 mm), and can be distinguished by male genitalia, forewing markings, and stripes on the abdominal terga Vl-lX. The mature larvae of E. sachalinensis differ from those of E. orientalis in having a deeper and more divergent head frontal process. Their body size distributions and additional ecolegical findings are discussed.

  • These studies were carried out to investigate the amounts and preferences of Oligota kashmirica benefica to 3 species of phytophagous mites and cannibalism. The number of mites consumed by an adult beetle tended to increase as prey density and temperature go up. In the constant temperature of 25$^{\circ}C$, average number of consumed adult mites by an adult of O. kashmirica benefica to Panonychus citri, Tetranychus urticae and T. kanzawai were 21.9, 13.5, and 14.1 for a day, respectively. The number of mites consumed by larva of O, kashmirica benefica tended to increase as the larva grow up. First, 2nd and 3rd larva of the beetle consumed 2.8, 11.2 and 25.4 adult of citrus red mite (P. citri) for a day, respectively. Total number of mites consumed during larval stage (5 days, 25$^{\circ}C$) to P. citri, T. urticae and T. kanzawai were 77.7, 61.3 and 73.0, respectively. The larva and adult beetle did not prefer specific species in the P. citri, T. urticae and T. kanzawai, and when there was no diet, few incidents of cannibalism between different developmental stage were observed.

  • Psylla pyricola population from Suwon($37^{\circ}$16' N) begins to enter diapause by exposure to a photoperiod of 14hr light. Over 93% of adults were induced to enter diapause when exposed to 13hr loght period, and at 18 and $25^{\circ}C$, the critical photoperiod was not influenced. When the photoperiod was switched during the nymphal stage from 16L to 10L, no morph change was occurred in the 4th and 5th instars. Average number of eggs laid per female was 486.2 in winter form adult and 387.2 in summer form adults, and average oviposition periods were 34 and 24 days, respectively.
