The Experience of Decision Making to Donate Organs (장기기증 희망자의 의사결정 경험)

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify the process of experience toward decision making to donate organs. Method: Eleven subjects who registered at the Association for Organ Sharing in Korea were recruited. Using in-depth interviews and tape-recordings, data was collected from Jun. 2001 to Feb. 2002 and the contents of these were analyzed by Glaser's grounded theory analysis method. Result: Basic Social-Psychological Problem(BSPP) of subjects were 'attachment to body' and the core theme, that is Basic Socialization Progress(BSP) were discovered to 'find out what is the meaning of life'. Also it consisted of four steps: 1st 'hesitate', 2nd 'look into self', 3rd 'realize the tie up to self' and last 're-find the meaning of life'. Conclusion: These findings indicate the Korean's Basic Socialization Progress of decision making regarding organ donation, so possible development of promoting decision making is necessary strategies for people who is having his/her potential of organ donation in mind.

Factors Influencing on Quality of Sleep among Patients at Surgical Intensive Care Units (외과계 중환자의 수면질에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate quality of sleep and to assess the factors that influence quality of sleep in surgical ICU. Methods: The subject of the study were consisted 109 adult patients who admitted to surgical ICU. The data were collected from May 20 to December 10, 2007 by structured questionnaires. The data were analyzed with descriptive analysis, paired t-test, Pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The score of quality of sleep was 4.57 point. The main sleep disturbance factors related to quality of sleep in surgical ICU inpatient were sleep time, machinery alarm and noise(adjusted $R^2$=33.2). Conclusion: Based on the finding of this study, it is needed to develop a nursing intervention program that including to promote quality of sleep and to decrease machinery alarm and noise in surgical ICU.

A Phenomenological Study on the Restoration Experience of Korean Elders in America toward Suicide Ideation (미국 이민 한국 노인의 자살생각 극복경험)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore and understand the suicide ideation and survival experience of Korean elders in America. Methods: A phenomenological research method guided data collection and analysis. A total of five elders reported having had suicide ideation participated. Data were collected through individual in-depth interviews. All interviews were audio taped and transcribed verbatim. Coding was used to establish different concepts and categories. Results: The following three constituents have been identified: retrospective focus based on the suicide ideation through the immigrant life, facing reality through comparison between the life in America and in Korea, survival skills and constructing view of life. Conclusion: The result of this study may contribute for health professionals working at various crisis settings to understand Korean immigrant elders with suicide ideation.

Effect of the Auriculotherapy on Dysmenorrhea in School-aged Girls (이혈요법이 여학생의 생리통과 월경곤란증에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was designed to identify the effect of auriculotherapy on low abdominal pain and dysmenorrhea in school-aged girls. Methods: This design was a pre and post-test with nonequivalent groups. The subjects were 71 girls who were middle school students with dysmenorrheal (35 students for the treatment group and 36 students for the comparison group). The subjects of the treatment group received auriculotherapy once a week for 10 weeks. The comparison group received instruction on auriculotherapy and was requested waiting for the order. Results: The treatment group reported significantly less low abdominal pain than the comparison group. However, there were not statistical differences in reported dysmenorrhea. In future analysis, 60.0% of the treatment group reported more physical comfort, and 45.7% reported more emotional cool down. Conclusion: The finding indicate that auriculotherapy could be effective in decreasing low abdominal pain during menstrual periods. Therefore, auriculotherapy could be an effective nursing intervention for low abdominal pain occurring during mensuration. However, further studies need to be done to support auriculotherapy as effective.

The Health-related Experiences of Foreign Wives in Korea (다문화가정 결혼이주여성의 건강 관련 경험)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore health-related experiences of the foreign wives. Methods: A qualitative research design was used to understand the health-related experiences of foreign wives. Ten informants were interviewed from December 2007 to December 2009. Results: The health related life experiences of foreign wives were analyzed within a self development process; Choice and struggle, Change and opportunity, and Settlement and expectation. The theme of choice and struggle includes physical and emotional stress in the initial stage of marriage. The second process of change and opportunity focused on the coping strategies of the women having power after knowledge acquisition from the multicultural family support center. The last theme was health and happiness from the women' perspectives. Conclusion: This study has emphasized the health condition of the foreign wives. Since foreign wives are members of Korean society, health care professionals need to design health services to meet their needs.

Effects of Diabetes Education and Telephone Counseling on Depression in Patients with Diabetes (당뇨교육과 전화상담이 당뇨병 환자 우울에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the effects of diabetes education and telephone counseling on depression in diabetic patients. Methods: 49 diabetic patients(24 in the control group and 25 in the experimental group) completed diabetes education and telephone counseling. Data were analyzed using ${\chi}^2$ test, paired t-test and unpaired t-tests. Results: There were no significant differences in depression between the experimental and control groups. But, Depression scores were much decreased in the experimental group. Conclusion: Depression decreased following the diabetes education and telephone counseling. These findings indicate that diabetes education and telephone counseling could be one of the way to decrease depression.

A Study on Experience of Health Behaviors of the Menopausal Women (폐경기 여성의 건강행위 경험 연구)

  • Purpose: The objective of the study is to describe the experience of health care activities of the menopausal women through phenomenological methodology. Methods: Seven menopausal women participated in the study. Open in-depth interviews were used to collect data, and data were analyzed by the phenomenological methods suggested by Colaizzi. Results: The data were separated into 4 categories of uncomfortable life due to physical and emotional change, building consistency in daily life through regulating a routine rhythm, recovering normality, recovering stability, and 8 clusters of themes; securing regularity in daily life, securing availability in daily life, regulating through elimination and diminishment, regulating through supplementation, being patient and control self, expressing self, review the context and exchanging views, expending a world through one's faith. Conclusion: Participants accepted menopause not as a disease but as a natural course of life and realized that menopausal health problems could be naturally settled in general health care activities in daily life.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study is to understand the experience of health behavior among elderly women. Method: Participants of this study were 8 healthy elderly women over 65, who live in city and town. The data were collected through in-depth interview and participant observation, analyzed by the Colaizzi(1978)'s phenomenal research method was adopted. The data collection period was from March to May of 2003. Result: The essential themes were 'desiring to keep oneself in good health even with aging body', 'receiving and living with illness', 'maintaining ones health with body activity', 'getting along with peace of mind' Conclusion: The study is significant because it provides viewpoints for understanding elderly women's experience of health behavior in the context of Korean culture. And also it provides guideline for elderly nursing intervention.

Depression and Life Satisfaction of Middle-aged Man (중년 남성의 우울과 삶의 만족도에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between depression and life satisfaction of the middle aged man. Method: The study was designed as a descriptive correlation study. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire which included general characteristics, depression, and life satisfaction. Data collection was done between Oct. 28 and Nov. 28 on the 145 middle aged man. Result: The degree of depression of the subjects was 8.98 and life satisfaction was 10.52 on the average. About 8% of the subjects was included in the depression group. There was a negative correlation between depression and life satisfaction of the subjects and it was statistically significant. Conclusion: Therefore, it should be developed the nursing program for qualitative life of middle aged man.

A Study on Attitude Patterns of Elderly toward Dying (노인의 임종과정에 대한 태도 유형 분석)

  • Purpose: This study was performed to identify and understand the nature of attitude patterns regarding dying process exhibited in the elderly persons who lived in the community setting. Method: Q methodology was applied. Ten elderly were selected from the senior centers and requested to answer open ended questions by using written questionnaires. Additionally, 12 other elderly from different senior centers were interviewed in depth, and their statements were recorded via voice pen by researchers to derive Q-population. From the 120 Q-population, 33 Q-sample were selected. 22 P-sample were rated by 1 to 9 point scale respectively for Q-sorting. For Q-type analysis, pc QUNAL was used. Result: Three types of attitude patterns were identified, which were valuing dignity, seeking provision of nature, and avoiding of dying process. Conclusion: The significance of this study is as follows : Discovery of 3 attitude patterns of elderly toward dying, better understanding about elderly's perspectives for favorable dying, and informations for possible development of nursing strategies for elderly who is facing death.
