In this study, a large consolidation test was carried out to estimate the consolidation behaviour of dredged clay ground improved by horizontal drain using plastic board drain with a vacuum pressure. The test results were analyzed by a numerical simulation using potential consolidation theory applied to a hollow cylinder. The rapid decreases in pore pressure and the drain speed in the plastic board indicate that the consolidation occurred quickly after the vacuum state was applied to the test soil. According to the numerical analysis obtained by applying the linear potential consolidation theory to a clay hollow cylinder with external radial drainage, the pore pressure is affected by the strain and the permeability of the soil rather than by the diffusion types. Therefore, measured surface settlement agreed with the numerical solution at the point where consolidation pressure increasing rate u: -0.5. Also the behaviour of the clay layer settlement in the place where the drain was installed was similar to that shown in Barron's consolidation theory. Finally, the design and construction procedure including the selection of the appropriate arrangement of horizontal drains were discussed based on the results of the laboratory tutsts. It is also shown that the potential consolidation theory make it possible to predict consolidation behaviour in the field using horizontal drains exactly.

The interaction of incident monochromiatic waves with N bottom-mounted porous circular cylinders is investigated in the frame of three-dimensional linear potential theory. The fluid domain is divided into N+l regions i.e. a single exterior region and N interior regions, and the diffraction potential in each fluid region is expressed by an eigenfunction expansion method (Williams and Li,2000). The analytic results show that the porous structure reduces both the wave forces and the run-up wave around the cylinder. To verify the developed model, the systematic model test with a line array of porous cylinders is conducted at the wave tank (30m$\times$7m$\times$1.5m). The analytic results are in good agreement with the experimental results within measured frequency range. It is concluded that the breakwater constructed with an array of porous circular cylinders shows the performance of an effective wave barrier together with the seawater-exchange effect and is considered to have vast potentials for the use of seawater-exchanging breakwater in the future.

Recently, various novel numerical models based on Navier-Stokes equation have been developed for calculating wave motions in the sea with coastal or ocean structures. Among those models, Volume Of Fluid (VOF) method might be the most popular one, and it has been used for numerical simulations of wave motions including complicated phenomena of wave breakings. VOF method, however, needs enormous computation time and large computational storage memories in general, thus it is practically difficult to use this method for calculations in the case of random waves because long and stable computation (e.g for more than 100 significant wave periods) is required to obtain statistically meaningful results. On the other hand if the wave motion is potential motion, Boundary Element Method (BEM), which is a much faster and more accurate method than VOF method, can be effectively used. The aim of this study is to develop a new efficient model applicable to calculations of wave motion and/or wave-structure interactions under random waves. To achieve this, a strictly combined BEM-VOF model has been developed by making the best use of both methods' merits; VOF method is used in a restricted fluid domain around a structure where complicated phenomena of wave breakings may exist, and BEM is used in the other domains far from the disturbance where the wave motion may be assumed to be potential. The verification of the model was performed with numerical results for Stokes' 5th order wave propagation and a random wave propagation.
The general formulation for free vibration and stability analysis of unsymmetric thin-wared space frames is presented in case where the shear deformation effects are neglected. The kinetic and total potential energies are derived by applying the extended virtual work principle, introducing displacement parameters defined at the arbitrarily chosen axis and including warping deformation and second order terms of finite semitangential rotations. In formulating the finite element procedure, cubic Hermitian polynomials are utilized as shape functions of the two node space frame element. Mass, elastic stiffness, and geometric stiffness matrices for the unsymmetric thin-walled section are evaluated, and load-correction stiffness matrices for off-axis distributed loadings are considered. In order to illustrate the accuracy and practical usefulness of this formulation, finite element solutions for the free vibration and stability problems of thin-walled beam-columns and space frames are presented and compared with available solutions.
This paper presents an analytical method for evaluating the free vibration of a circular cylindrical tank filled with bounded compressible fluid. The analytical method was developed by means of the finite Fourier series expansion method. The compressible fluid motion was determined by means of the linear velocity potential theory. To clarify the validity of the analytical method, the natural frequencies of a circular cylindrical tank with the clamped-clamped boundary condition, and filled with water, were obtained by the analytical method and the finite element method using a comercial ANSYS 5.2 software. Excellent agreement on the natural frequencies of the liquid-filled tank structure was found. The compressiblity and the fluid density effects on the normalized coupled natural frequencies were investigated. The density of fluid affects on all coupled natural frequencies of the tank, whereas the compressibility of fluid affects mainly on the natural frequencies of lower circumferential modes.

This paper is concerned with the analysis of wave reflection and transmission from multiple floating breakwaters. Linear potential theory was used for modeling wave field, and the behaviors of the floating breakwaters was represented as linearized equation of motions. The boundary value problem for the wave field was discretized by Galerkin technique. The radiation condition at infinity was modeled as infinite elements developed by Park et al.(1991). The validation of the developed model was given through the comparison with hydraulic experimental data conducted by Park et al.(2000). The possibility for the application of multiple floating breakwaters was also discussed based on the numerical experiments.

The numerical analysis on the wave screening performance of the submerged breakwater with various crown widths is presented. The fluid motion is considered as linearized two dimensional potential flow and the finite element method is used to analyze the wave screening performance of the submerged breakwater. It is found that single-submerged breakwater with large crown width shows the most effective wave screening performance and single-submerged breakwater with small crown width also shows fairly good wave screening performance but its effectiveness is less than that of single-submerged breakwater with large crown width. However, double- or triple-submerged breakwater with small crown width shows more effective wave screening performance than that of single- or double-submerged breakwater with large crown width. It is expected that the submerged breakwater with small crown width is economical because it reduces the size of structure.

In order to understand the characteristics of floating breakwaters we planned series of experimental and numerical investigations and completed the first stage which is the experiment with fred pontoons near the free surface. As controlling parameters the draft and breadth of pontoon were varied and the wave frequency and steepness were also varied. Wave transmission and forces exiled on the breakwater were experimentally investigated and compared with the results computed based on linear potential theory. Discussions made are on the effect of draft and wave length on the wave transmission and force in fixed pontoon case. The predicted and measured results show quantitatively good agreement both in forces and transmission coefficient. The effect of separation distance between two pontoons on the wave transmission and force in array case is also examined.
Sloshing frequencies of the fluid in rectangular tanks with a bottom-mounted rectangular block are determined by linear water wave theory. Velocity potential is decomposed into those for the wall-induced waves, and the reflected, transmitted, and scattered waves by the block. The reflection and transmission coefficients are determined using the continuity conditions of mass flux and energy flux on the common vertical boundaries of the fluid regions, and the boundary conditions on the both sides of the block. The analysis results indicate that the sloshing frequencies reduce, as the block becomes tall and vade and as the block moves toward the center. The variations of the sloshing frequencies due to the block are found to be more sensitive in broad thanks than is tall tanks.

In this paper, wave responses of buoyant flap-typed storm surge barriers was studied numerically. Wave motions were modeled by using a linear potential wave theory, and behaviors of structures were represented as a Newton's 2nd law of motion. The near field region of the fluid was discretized as conventional quadratic iso-parametric elements, while the far field was modeled as infinite elements. Comparisons with the results from hydraulic model tests show that the present model gives good results. By using the model, the applicability of a buoyant flap-typed storm surge barrier in Masan bay was investigated considering field environmental conditions.
