  • The generation of high-purity hydrogen from hydrocarbon fuels is essential for efficient operation of fuel cell. In general, most feasible strategies to generate hydrogen from hydrocarbon fuels consist of a reforming step to generate a mixture of $H_2$, CO, $CO_2$ and $H_2O$(steam) followed by water gas shift(WGS) and CO clean-up steps. The WGS reaction that shifts CO to $CO_2$ and simultaneously produces another mole of $H_2$ was carried out in a two-stage catalytic conversion process involving a high temperature shift(HTS) and a low temperature shift(LTS). In the WGS operation, gas emerges from the reformer is taken through a high temperature shift catalyst to reduce the CO concentration to about $3\sim4%$ followed to about 0.5% via a low temperature shift catalyst. The WGS reactor was designed and tested in this study to produce hydrogen-rich gas with CO to less than 0.5%.

  • The policy-making and technological development of eco-friendly automobiles designed to increase their supply is ongoing, but the internal combustion engine still accounts for approximately 95% of automobiles in use. To meet the stricter emission regulations of internal combustion engines based on fossil fuels, the proportion of after-treatments for vehicles and (ocean going) vessels is increasing continuously. As diesel engines have high power and good fuel economy in addition to less CO2 emissions, their market share is increasing not only in commercial vehicles, but also in passenger cars. Because of the characteristics of the diesel combustion, however, NOx is generated in localized high-temperature combustion regions, and particulates are formed in the zones of diffusion combustion. LNT and urea-SCR catalysts have been developed for the after-treatment of exhaust gas to reduce NOx in diesel vehicles. This study examined the effect of a containing promoter on SCR catalysts to cope with the severe exhaust gas regulation. The de-NOx performance of the Mn-SCR catalyst was the best, and the de-NOx performance was improved as the ion exchange rate between Mn ion and Zeolyst was good and the activation energy was low. The de-NOx performance of the 7Cu-15Ba/78Zeoyst catalyst was 32% at $200^{\circ}C$ and 30% at $500^{\circ}C$, and showed the highest performance. The NOx storage material of BaO loaded as a promoter was well dispersed in the Cu-SCR catalyst and the additional de-NOx performance of BaO was affected by the reduction reaction of the Cu-SCR catalyst. Among the three catalysts, the 7Cu-15Ba/Zeolyst SCR catalyst was resistant to thermal degradation. The same type of CuO due to thermal degradation migrates and agglomerates because BaO reduces the agglomeration of the main catalyst CuO particles.

  • Mg-Al mixed oxides with molar ratio of Mg/Al = 1-3 were prepared by co-precipitation and characterized by using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, BET surface area and pore volume measured by $N_2$ sorption analysis, and temperature programmed desorption of iso-propanol. As Al content in Mg-Al mixed oxide increased, the acidity and BET surface area proportionally increased. This increase of acidity directly influenced the catalytic activity of iso-propanol conversion and selectivity to propylene.

  • Activated oxidation catalysts are generated by the treatment of pentadentate Schiff base cobalt(Ⅱ) complexes with the oxygen saturated DMF solution. Oxidation of 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol by homogeneous oxidation catalysts of superoxo type pentadentate schiff base cobalt(Ⅲ) complexes yields 2,6-di-tert-butylbenzoquinone(BQ) as a major product. And $O_2$/Co mole ratio of homogeneous oxidative catalysts such as [Co(Ⅲ)(sal-DET)]$O_2$ and [Co(Ⅲ)(sal-DPT)]$O_2$by PVT method of the oxygen absorption in DMSO and pyridine solution was 1:1, 1:1.52 in DMF solution and ${\mu}$-peroxo type cobalt(Ⅲ) complexes formed at solid state. The redox reaction processes of superoxo type cobalt(Ⅲ) complexes as homogeneous oxidation catalysts were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and DPP method at a glassy carbon electrode. As a result of electrochemical measurements the reduction processes of oxygen adducted superoxo type cobalt(Ⅲ) complexes occurred to four steps including prewave of $O_2$-in 0.1M TEAP-DMSO and 0.1 M TEAP-Pyridine as supporting electrolyte solution.

  • The objective of this study is to determine the optimum conditions of operational parameters using factorial design for phenol degradation in photocatalytic oxidation reactors. Factorial design is widely used to select the dominant factors and their ranges in experiments involving several factors where it is necessary to study the effect of factors on a response. The effects of initial concentration of phenol, intensity of UV light and surface area of catalyst on phenol degradation were investigated. Two levels were considered in this study so that the experiment was a $2^3$ factorial design with three replicates. The experimental results show that an increase in initial concentration of phenol from 5 to 50 mg/L intensity of UV light from 5,000 to $20,000\;{\mu}W/cm^2$, and surface area of catalyst from 740 to $2,105\;cm^2$ enhanced the phenol degradation rate by an average of 1.86, 1.79, and 2.10 mg/L hr, respectively. Interaction effects do not appear to be as large on the phenol degradation rate as the main effects of single factors. The optimum working condition for photocatalytic oxidation reactors, despite the higher three factors the better removal rate, is the highest surface area or catalyst.

  • The catalytic oxidation of 1.2-dichloroethane was investigated over precious metal supported on alumina using a fixed bed microreactor. Among the catalysts tested, the conversion of 1.2-dichloroethane decreased in the following order : Ru > Pt > Pd $${\sim_=}$$ Rh and Pt was found to be the most active catalyst for the complete oxidation of 1.2-dichloroethane to $CO_2$. Major products containing carbon were vinyl chloride and $Co_2$ at temperature ranging from 200 to $400^{\circ}C$. The presence of vinyl chloride in products suggests that the first step in the oxidation of 1.2-dichloroethane is dehydrochlorination and the second is oxidation of vinyl chloride to $CO_2$. To investigate the effect of HCl on the activity of the complete oxidation, some experiments were conducted by adding HCl to the feed. The presence of HCl increased the conversion of 1.2-dichloroethane below $300^{\circ}C$ owing to the increase of surface acidity, but it didn't affect the conversion above $300^{\circ}C$. The reversible adsorption of HCl onto catalyst surface inhibited the complete oxidation to $CO_2$.

  • The Co and Ni catalysts supported on $Al_2O_3$ for partial oxidation of methane producing hydrogen were synthesized using impregnation to incipient wetness. And the promotion effects of metals such as Mg, Ce, La and Sr in partial oxidation of methane over these $Co/Al_2O_3$ and $Ni/Al_2O_3$ were investigated. Reaction activity of these catalysts for the partial oxidation of methane was investigated in the temperature range of 450~$650^{\circ}C$ at 1 atm and $CH_2/O_2$ = 2.0. The catalysts were characterized by BET, XRD and SEM/EDX. The results indicated that the catalytic performance of these catalysts was improved with the addition of 0.2 wt% metal promoter. The Mg promoted $Co/Al_2O_3$ catalyst showed the highest $CH_4$ conversion and hydrogen selectivity at higher temperature than $500^{\circ}C$. The Ce and Sr promoted Ni catalysts superior to Co-based catalysts in the low temperature range. The addition of metal promoter to $Co/Al_2O_3$ and $Ni/Al_2O_3$ catalysts increased the surface area.

  • The objective of this study is the development of carbon-recycle technology, that converts carbon dioxide captured from flue gas to carbon monoxide or carbon for reuse in industrial fields. It is difficult to decompose $CO_2$ because $CO_2$ is very stable molecule. And then metal oxide was used as an activation agent or catalyst for the decomposition of $CO_2$ at low temperature. Metal oxides, which converts $CO_2$ to CO or C, were prepared using Ni-ferrite by solid state method and hydrothermal synthesis in this study. TPR/TPO and TGA were used as an analysis method to analyze the decomposition characteristics of $CO_2$. As the results, the reduction area of $H_2$ was high value at 15 wt% of NiO and the decomposition area of $CO_2$ was superior capacity at 5 wt% of NiO. However, TGA data showed contrary results that reduction area of $H_2$ was 28.47wt% and oxidation area by $CO_2$ was 26.95wt% at 2.5 wt% of NiO, one of the Ni-ferrite powders synthesized using solid state method. $CO_2$ decomposition efficiency was 94.66% and it is excellent results in comparison with previous studies.

  • To investigate the effect of the catalyst synthesis method on the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of nbutenes, $BiFe_{0.65}MoP_{0.1}$ oxide catalysts were prepared with various synthesis methods such as co-precipitation, citric acid method, hydrothermal method, and surfactant templated method. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), $N_2$ sorption, and $NH_3/1$-butene-temperature programmed desorption ($NH_3/1$-butene-TPD) to correlate with catalytic activity in ODH reaction. Among the catalysts studied here, $BiFe_{0.65}MoP_{0.1}$ oxide catalyst prepared with co-precipitation method marked the highest activity showing 1-butene conversion, 79.5%, butadiene selectivity, 85.1% and yield, 67.7% after reaction for 14 h. From the result of $NH_3$-TPD, the catalytic activity is closely related to the acidity of the $BiFe_{0.65}MoP_{0.1}$-x oxide catalyst and acidity of the $BiFe_{0.65}MoP_{0.1}$ oxde catalyst prepared with co-precipitation method was higher than that of other catalysts. In addition, combined with the 1-butene TPD, the higher catalytic activity is closely related to the amount of weakly adsorbed intermediate (< $200^{\circ}C$) and the desorbing temperature of strongly adsorbed intermediates (> $200^{\circ}C$).

  • Cretaceous sedimentary rocks bearing dinosaur tracks in the Goseong interchange area were studied for their conservation and public display in the aspect of applied mineralogy. Black clay layers alternate with silt layers in the sedimentary rocks. The verical and horizontal fissures are commonly filled with calcite veinlets, supergenetic iron and manganese oxides. The rocks are composed of quartz, albite, K-feldspar, calcite, chlorite, illite, muscovite, and biotite, with minor apatite and rutile. Silt layers are relatively rich in calcite and albite, whereas clay layers are abundant in quartz, illite, and chlorite. Al, Fe, Mg, K, Ti, and P are enriched in the clay layers, while Ca, Na, and Mn in silt. Most of trace elements including V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cs, Zr, REE, Th, and U are enriched in clay layers. Inorganic carbon are present in silt layers as calcite, while organic carbon in black clay layers. The black clay layers were partly altered to yellow clay layers along the fissures, simultaneously with the decrease of organic carbon. Selective exfoliation of clay-rich black and yellow clay layers, calcite matrix of silt layers and calcite infillings of fissures are estimated as the major weakness potentially promoting chemical and physical degradation of the track-bearing rock specimens.
