  • It seems that blowing air bubble out of the bulb surface of a ship of flat bottom will reduce the frictional resistance, since wetted area of the hull surface is reduced owing to air bubble staying close to the surface. To as certain this concept, at first, the limiting streamlines around the bow was observed, and local distribution of pressure and shear stress, due to the change of air-blowing position, air supply pressure, and the model speed, was investigated. It was found that the local friction was reduced near the bulb and air-bubble formations also play an important role as a drag component. This paper can be considered as a preliminary study on the drag reduction of conventional ships by the micro-bubble injection.

  • In this research the discharge characteristics of logic gate of the discharge logic gate plasma display panel with the NOT-AND logic function newly designed was analyzed. As for this discharge logic gate a logical output is induced by controlling the voltage between the electrodes using the discharge path. From the experimental result the discharge characteristics of logic gate is influenced by the interrelation of the voltages appling two vertical electrodes. To in the application possibility to large screen PDP, the discharge characteristics by the line resistance of the electrode was evaluated In result it has been inferred that the influence which the drop of voltage by the line resistance of two vertical electrodes exerts on the discharge of the logic gate is minute. Through the experiment, the optimized values of the pulse voltages and the current limitation resistances of each electrode which composed the discharge logic gate were obtained and maximum operation margin of 49[V] was obtained.

  • In this paper, two series of numerical simulations are performed using LS/DYNA3D: The first series of numerical simulations are collision events between a 310,000 DWT double hull VLCC (struck ship) and two 35,000 and 105,000 DWT tankers (striking ships). Collisions are assumed to occur at the middle of the VLCC with the striking ships moving at right angle to the YLCC centerline. The second ones, grounding accidents of two 40,000 DWT Conventional and Advanced Double Hull lanker bottom structures, CONV/PD328 and ADH/PD328 models. The overall objective of this study is to understand the structural failure and energy absorbing mechanisms during collision and grounding events for double hull tanker side and bottom structures, which lead to the initiation of inner shell rupture and cause the kinetic energy dissipation to bring the ship to a stop. These numerical simulations will contribute to the estimation of damage extents of collision and grounding accidents and the future improvements in lanker safety at the design stage.

  • Increasing concerns on radioactive wastes have drawn much attention on the development of remediation technologies. Massive amounts of radioactive wastes generated from hospital and nuclear power plants were exposed to our environment. Although physicochemical removal methods were developed, an eco-friendly remediation method has not yet been demonstrated. Recently, an extremophilic bacterium has received much attention due to their extraordinary characteristics. Among them, Deinococcus radiodurans (D. radiodurans) strain was regarded as the best host organism for the removal of radioactive heavy metals and radionuclides, because of their superb characteristics like tolerance against the high level of radioactivity. In this article, we briefly introduced the extraordinary nature of D. radiodurans and also discussed the potential use of D. radiodurans strain for the removal of radioactive wastes.

  • The e-Navigation promoted by the International Maritime Organization is a technology that provides marine-related information necessary for ship and shore side by electronic means for marine safety, security and protecting marine environment. The IHO S-100 standard is a geospatial standard that can express various hydrographic information. Various specifications including S-101 for electronic charts are being developed. In this paper, to help developers who are interested in implementing the technology of S-100, we not only analyze the process to portray the S-100 based data but also implement a case study on S-129 under keel clearance management. The portrayal process consists of data encoding and portrayal engine. Data encoding includes generation of application schema and data set. Portrayal engine is performed by the reform of the generated data set, the XSLT processing, and then the generation of drawing instructions.

  • Ship's bottom slamming has been studied by many researchers for a very long time. But still some ships suffer structure damages caused by the bottom slamming impacts. This paper presents a practical computation method of the design impact pressure due to ship's bow bottom slamming. Large heave and pitch motions of a rigid hull ship are simulated by the nonlinear strip method in time domain and the relative colliding velocity between the bow bottom and the water surface is calculated using the simulated ship motions. The bottom slamming impact pressure is calculated as a product of the relative colliding velocity squared and the bottom slamming pressure coefficient that is obtained by modification of the SNAME pressure coefficients based on Ochi's slamming experiments. Not only the bottom slamming pressures but also the required bottom plate thicknesses are calculated and compared with those of the classification society rules. The comparisons show good agreements and it is confirmed that the present method is practically very useful for the bottom structure design against ship's bow bottom slamming impacts.
