Evaluation of Field Applicability of Controlled Low Strength Materials as Cavity Filling Materials Various Industrial by Products (공동충전재로써 산업부산물을 복합적으로 활용한 슬러리계 되메움의 현장적용성 평가)

  • In this study, the engineering characteristics of CLSM mixed with GBFS and GF were identified to review the applicability as a replacement material and further evaluate the recharge and field applicability as a joint filler material. First, Using more than 30% of GBFS to replace FA enabled bleeding control through improved fluidity. Second, When using more than 30% of FNS to replace sand, it was found that adding 0.25~0.35 of the AE agent is effective for bleeding control through improved fluidity. Third, When using more than 30% of both GBFS and FNS in combination, it was found that adding 0.3~0.35 of the AE agent is effective for bleeding control through improved fluidity. Also, it was confirmed that proper mixing of 15~60% of GF secured the effective strength and desired quality as a refiller and joint filler material.

  • A low-priced catalyst for pyrolysis of LDPE has been synthesized. Fly ash, which is waste material generated from coal-fired power plants was used as silica and alumna sources for solid acid catalyst. Amorphous silica-alumina catalysts (FSAs) were pre-pared by dissolution of silica and alumina from fly ash, followed by co-precipitation of the dissoluted ions. A series of LDPE pyrolysis were carried out in a thermogravimetric analyzer to investigate the effects of synthesis conditions such as NaOH/fly ash weight ratio and activation time one catalytic performance of FSAs. The physical properties of FSAs were examined and related to their catalytic performances. FSA(1.2-8) synthesized with NaOH/fly ash weight ratio of 1.2 and the activation time of 8 hours showed the best catalytic performance. The catalytic performance of FSA(1.2-8) was comparable with that of commercial catalysts and it was concluded that the FSA could be a good candidate for catalytic use in the recycling of waste polyolefins.

A Study on the Engineering Characteristics of Power Plant Coal Ash (화력발전소 부산물인 석탄회의 공학적 특성에 관한 연구)

  • In this study characteristics for reclaimed ash was studied to enlarge the usage of reclaimed ash which is reaching to 72 million ton producted from whole thermal power plants in South Korea. Fly ash and bottom ash are reclaimed separately at some of thermal power plants. However, typically bottom ash and fly ash are mixed when they are buried at most of the thermal power plant, as a result the engineering characteristics of ponded ash are not investigated properly. In order to investigate the engineering characteristics of the ponded ash, laboratory tests were performed with ponded ash and fly ash from youngheung and samcheonpo thermal power plants. Specific gravity, unit weight, and grain size analysis test were fulfilled to evaluate the physical characteristics and triaxial permeability test, direct shear test, unconfined compressive strength test, compaction test were performed to evaluate the mechanical characteristics. And also engineering characteristics of coal ash from anthracite and Bituminous thermal power plants were compared and studied respectively. As a result of the study, it was confirmed that using coal ash from Bituminous thermal power plants can be effective in the place where lightweight materials are required and using coal ash from anthracite thermal power plants can be effective as backfill material which require higher permeability. Finally, it was confirmed that fly ash from youngheung thermal power plants which has the lowest permeability among the tested material is suitable for a field requiring impermeable material.

  • Korea depends on the import of raw materials such as iron ore and coal for the steel industry. These raw materials have a major impact on the cost, productivity, and quality competitiveness in the global steel industry. To secure the competitiveness of steel companies, it is necessary to reduce the country's dependence on raw materials. This can be achieved using byproducts with a high Fe content, which are primarily generated by the steel industry. These byproducts are available in the form of a very fine powder, which can disperse as dust when used directly in plant processes. Dust dispersion has a negative impact on the environment and can lead to the loss of raw materials. To enable the use of a wide range of Fe-containing byproducts, it is necessary to pretreat them in the form of larger aggregates such as pellets and briquettes. There are several methods to achieve such aggregates. There are two ways to produce briquettes: using a hot briquette, which supplies additional heat to produce briquettes, or using a cold briquette, which does not use heat. A method for producing cold briquettes using Fe-containing byproducts was investigated in this study. The yield ratio and briquette strength were examined under various manufacturing conditions.

  • This paper presents a laboratory investigation into the effects of fillers using industrial by-product such as coal ash, IGCC slag on properties of hot-mixed asphalt concrete variation with filler content. For comparison, existing mixture with lime and dust have also been considered. Marshall and flow test has been considered for the purpose of mix design as well as evaluation of mixture. Other performance tests such as indirect tensile strength test, tensile strength ratio(moisture susceptibility), dynamic stability have also been carried out variation with filler content. It is observed that the mixes with industrial by-product exhibit conform with quality standard. Therefore, it has been recommended to utilize industrial by-product based on fly ash wherever available, not only reducing the produce cost but also partly solve the industrial by-product utilization and disposal problem.

  • Non-refining fly ash and bottom ash, the byproducts generated from the coal-fired power stations, have usually been disposed of in onshore ash disposal sites. With an increase of power consumption due to industrial development, the generation of coal ash has been growing tremendously. Current insufficiency of disposal sites and environmental concerns over newly-built disposal sites have also led a growing need to utilize the coal ash. Accordingly, this paper compares and analyzes the fundamental properties of the coal ash collected from each disposal sites in order to increase the usability of the coal ash generated from coal-fired power stations. The results of the study indicate that coal ash shall be separately applied by the properties for each intended use as the ash greatly differs in its properties depending on the site of disposal. In particular, it is shown that the overall evaluation on the ash shall be necessary as the quality might be varied by the change of absorptance when applied as an aggregate for concrete. From the examination on the salt content, it has been observed that the ash can be applied as an aggregate for concrete only after more than 3 times of washing process.

This study has resulted in the following findings. First, Using more than 30% of GBFS to replace FA enabled bleeding control through improved fluidity. Moreover, it has been confirmed that effective strength and proper quality can be achieved when it was applied as a refiller and joint filler material with higher early strength than the base material. Second, When using more than 30% of FNS to replace sand, it was found that adding 0.3~0.35 of the AE agent is effective for bleeding control through improved fluidity. Third, When using more than 30% of both GBFS and FNS in combination, it was found that adding 0.3~0.35 of the AE agent is effective for bleeding control through improved fluidity. Also, it was confirmed that proper mixing of 15~60% of GF secured the effective strength and desired quality as a refiller and joint filler material. Fourth, The relationship between the superficial level and internal micro pores of CLSM from the curing process needs to be discussed and reviewed in more detail through further research studies.

  • The industrial by-products market has increased at a geometric rate worldwide with the rapid economic growth. Among the wide variety of industrial by-products, fly ash which is generated by the combustion of coal is one of the more troublesome industrial wastes because they entail substantial disposal cost and also cause a shortage of disposal sites. In Korea alone, fly ash generation is expected to increase to 5.8 million tons by 2009, and to 6 million tons by 2010. Given the accelerated industrial development in developing countries, the amount of fly ash generation is predicted to reach enormous levels throughout the world. An increasing number of studies have currently focused on the feasibility of recycling industrial wastes i.e., fly ash in terms of environmental advantages. In this study, the optimized mix proportion of high performance shotcrete using fly ash was determined for the purpose of promoting recycling and reuse of resources.

Analysis the Use of Concrete Fine Aggregates of Coal Gasification Slag (콘크리트용 잔골재로서 석탄가스화 용융슬래그(CGS)의 활용성 분석)

  • This study is analysis of the utilization as a concrete fine aggregate on CGS, a by-product of Integrated coal gasification combined cycle(IGCC). That is, in KS F 2527 "Concrete aggregate," properties of 1~12times to CGS were evaluated, focusing on quality items corresponding to natural aggregate sand(NS) and melted slag aggregate sand(MS). As a result, the distribution of grain shape, safety and expansion were all satisfied with KS standards by physical properties, but the quality was unstable at 7~12times of water absorption ratio and absolute dry density. The particle size distribution was unstable due to asymmetry distribution of coarse particles, and particles were too thick for 7~12times. The passing ratio of 0.08mm sieve was also out of the KS standard at part factor of 7~12times, but chloride content, clay contents, coal and lignite were all satisfactory. Meanwhile, chemical composition was satisfactory except for $SO_3$ in 1~6times, and content and amount of harmful substances were all within the specified value except for F in 7~12times. As a result of SEM analysis, the surface quality and porosity were 7~12times more than 1~6times, and it was the quality was degraded. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce the quality deviation by using separate measures in order to utilize it as concrete aggregate in the future, and if it is premixed with fine quality aggregate, it will contribute positively to solve aggregate supply shortage and utilize circulation resources.

Flow and Strength Characteristics of the Lightweight Foamed CLSM(Controlled Low-Strength Materials) with Coal Ash (석탄회를 활용한 경량기포유동화재의 플로우 및 강도 특성)

  • Coal ash of industial by-products was not recycled about 30% in total emissions. Moreover, it caused environmental pollution as well as wasted unnecessary expenses and time. Currently, fly ash(FA) is recycled as construction material however ponded ash(PA) is mostly buried. Lightweight foamed Controlled Low-Strength Materials(CLSM) evaluated in this study reduces unit weight by mixing foam in the traditional Controlled Low-Strength Material and has lightweight and flowability to be available for backfill materials in construction. Flow test, unconfined compressive strength test, and foamed-slurry unit weight test were performed in this study and the applicability of lightweight foamed CLSM for construction materials was evaluated. The results indicate that the mixture ratio(PA:FA) ranging from 70:30 to 50:50, cement of 7%, foam of 2~3%, and water content of 26.5~29.5% were required to satisfy the following standards such as flow value(i.e., 20cm), unconfined compressive strength(i.e., 0.8~1.2MPa), and foamed-slurry unit weight(i.e., $12{\sim}15kN/m^3$).
