The genetic variations and the rate of mycelial growth in the dikaryon and the monokaryon stages of Pleurotus spp. were surveyed during their subcultures. The highest growth rate was observed on both the 3rd and the 4th subcultures. The remarkably rapid growth rate was detected in P. ostreatus dikaryon. Genetic similarities in the dikaryon and the monokaryon of P. ostreatus were more than 57.5% and 85.7%, respectively, and those of P. eryngii were more than 85.2% and 84.8%, respectively. The genetic similarities of monokaryotic P. ostreatus were higher than those of dikaryotic. The topology of phylogenetic trees showed that the divergence and the clustering patterns of branch did not correlated with the number of subcultures. This suggests that genetic variations occur very randomly on mycelial cultures. These results suggest that the monokaryotic mycelia is genetically more stable than the dikaryotic in subcultures, and that it is very useful to stock monokaryotic mycelia for making spawns and breeding of Pleurotus spp.

Azotobacter vinelandii UWD synthesizes poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV), one of the biodegradable polymers, when odd and even number carbon sources are simultaneously added to a medium. In this study, we investigated the specific growth rate of Azotobacter vinelandii UWD on propionic acid and valeric acid. The specific growth rates were $0.183 hr^{-1} and 0.137 hr^{-1}$ at 1.0∼1.5 g/L of propionic acid and 1.0 g/L of valeric acid, respectively. When a mixture of 0.75 g/L of propionic acid and 0.5 g/L of valeric acid was added to the medium, the specific growth rate was 0.196 hr(sup)-1, which was equal to or higher than those of the individual organic acids. Among 10∼50 g/L of glucose cell growth was best at 20 g/L.
This study was carried out to determine the optimum culture conditions for Phellinus spp. known as white rot fungi showing anti-cancer activity. The optimum solid medium for mycelial growth at $25^{\circ}C$ was potato dextrose agar medium and optimum pH range was $6.0{\sim}8.0$, while all species showed reduced or no growth at pH 4.0. Most species showed good growth at $25{\sim}30^{\circ}C$. Out of 10 species of Phellinus examined, P. biscuspidatus was the best growing fungus in the range of pH $6.0{\sim}7.0$ based on mycelial density. Three species such as P. biscuspidatus, P. johnsonianus and P. lloydii could be grouped in mesophile fungi, showing $30{\sim}35^{\circ}C$ optimum temperature.
In order to analyze growth and yield of rice population at the stand point of productive ecology, productive structure and growth rate of rice plants and effects of their related factors were studied. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. High crop growth rate was maintained throughout growing season when rice plants grew in population compared to a single rice plant. Since crop growth rate in rice stands were also higher at ripening stage, higher yields were obtained. 2. Higher crop growth rate of rice plants in population was maintained by the increase of leaf area rather than by net assimilation rate. 3. As the overgrowth of upper leaves of plant population in some rice varieties transmission of light into lower leaves was inhibited and thus most of them were eventually died before flowering. 4. In the case of rice population, the ratio of productive organ to non-productive organ, light transmission rate and nitrogen contents of active leaf blade were lower than individual rice plants under isolated condition.
In a 20 L fermentor experiments the level of dissolved oxygen (D.O.) strongly affected growth and PHBV production of Azotobacter vinelandii UWD. A higher D.O. (5%) increased specific cell growth rate two folds but PHBV production was 17 folds higher (62.3 wt%) at a lower D.O.(1%) level. D.O. level was not a good criterion to evaluate the effect of aeration on fermentation characteristics of A. vinelandii UWD. This strain maintained an equal D.O. (5%) by decreasing its oxygen consumption rate when oxygen transfer rate (OTR) was decreased by changing agitation speed at a fixed aeration rate. OTR rather than D.O. was a criterion to explain the effect of aeration on the cell growth and PHBV production. At 5% D.O. with a lower 0TR cell growth rate decreased but PHBV production (57.3 wt%) approached to that (62.3 wt%) of the lower (1%) D.O.
To understand flowering response under diverse day-length condition and the movement of floral stimulus, we used six perilla accessions which showed diverse days to flowering. Though the growth phase was reported as irreversible between vegetative and reproductive stage, perilla showed reversible growth phase according to day length increase in May and June. When it sowed in March, flowering response was started in early May and vegetative and reproductive phase was coexisted in late June. When a part of a perilla plant was treated under short day condition, only apical buds on main stem or branches were flowered but other long day conditioned apical buds were not flowered. With this result it is suggested that the floral stimulus can not be transferred to other part of perilla.
The optimal synthetic medium, temperature and pH range for the mycelial growth of Cordyceps scarabaeicola were PDA, $25^{\circ}C$, and pH $8.0{\sim}8.5$, respectively. The effects of carbon sources, nitrogen sources and mineral salts on mycelial growth were superior to lactose, ammonium phosphate and $CaCl_2$, respectively. Liquid spawn culture was selected out BM(brown sugar 3%, soybean flour 0.3%, potassium phosphate 0.05%, magnesium sulfate 0.05%) medium.
To develope reforestation methods for environmentally sound and ecological forest management, stand structure and radial growth of the trees were investigated and compared by species and study sites. Plantation forest studied on Betula costata, Betula platyphylla var. japonica and Betula davurica, was located at Jawoon-ni Nae-myeun, Hongcheon-gun and natural forest studied on Betula costata, was located at Jangjeon-ni Jinbu-myeun, Pyeungchang-gun. In 12.3 years after planting, differences of annual diameter increment among three Betula species were significant. The highest mean annual diameter increments, 7.67mm was measured in planting Betula costata, and followed by planting Betula platyphylla var. japonica and Betula davurica, and the lowest values. 4.32mm did in natural Betula costata. If planting Genus Beula in this district. Betula costata might be the best species. From these facts, massive planting of three Betula species in this district might have much problems, but might be evaluated as proper trial.

The ectomycorrhizal basidiomycete Tricholoma is one of mushroom groups that cannot be cultivated artificially. To use this mushroom as applicable resource for food production, it is necessary to obtain information about their mycelial growth properties in various environmental conditions. This study investigated the mycelial growth of four domestic isolates of Tricholoma species (T. bakamatsutake, T. fulvocastaneum, T. matsutake, T. terreum) at different physical and chemical conditions. The optimal physical conditions for their mycelia growth were found to be a temperature range of $20{\sim}25^{\circ}C$ and a pH range of 4.0~7.0 in dark condition. The growth of T. matsutake was retarded at high temperature ($30^{\circ}C$). Tests to determine the chemical factors that affected mycelial growth showed that the four Tricholoma spp. grew 1% saline. T. matsutake grew in up to 2% saline. In the presence of various heavy metals (50 ppm) and pesticides (suppliers' recommended concentration), mycelial growth was inhibited the most by cadmium and emamectin benzoate, respectively. However, all the four Tricholoma spp. grew with $Cu^+$. The growth of T. matsutake was not inhibited by abamectin, acetamiprid, and thiacloprid. Extracellular enzyme activities of amylase and ${\beta}$-glucosidase were detected only in T. bakamatsutake and T. fulvocastaneum. The results of the present study allowed us to determine suitable or harmful environmental conditions for the mycelial cultivation of the Tricholoma spp.
