The Effects of the workforce Age Structure on Productivity or Labor Costs (사업체 근로자의 연령구성이 생산성과 인건비에 미치는 영향)

  • In this paper, we use panel dataset from Korean linked worker-firm to analyse the effects of the workforce age structure on the productivity or labor costs. We measure 'labor productivity' as added value per capita, 'cost of labor' as labor cost per capita and estimate a dynamic panel model to study the effects of the workforce age structure on the productivity or labor costs. Empirical analysis results show that the workforce age structure is positively related to productivity and labor costs, but only up to the aged of 35-39. That is, we find that an increase in the proportion of younger workers or elder workers rather than the aged 35-39 has a negative effect on productivity and labor cost. In particular, the difference between the estimation coefficient of productivity and labor cost when the share of workers aged 50 or older is increased instead of the aged 35-39 is higher than the difference between the estimation coefficient of productivity and labor cost when the share of workers aged 30 or younger is increased instead of the aged 35-39. Our results exhibit that it is reasonable for firms to worry about declining productivity of elderly workers, whereas firms already used older workers efficiently, such as by adjusting their labor costs.

Structural Equation Model Analysis of Factors Influencing Overall Job Satisfaction of Working-Age Workers

  • This study analyzes and verifies the relationship between job satisfaction by factor, organizational commitment, job satisfaction, and overall job satisfaction of working-age workers using a structural equation model. The research data used the 24th data of the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study. The subjects of the study were 8,024 workers in the production age of 15 to 64 as of 2021 among 9,132 people who correctly marked the values of the observation variables. As a result of the study, it was found that job satisfaction by factor had a positive impact on organizational commitment, job satisfaction, and overall work and job satisfaction. In addition, organizational commitment and job satisfaction were found to have a positively significant effect on overall work and job satisfaction. These results emphasize the importance of understanding and solving the unique problems faced by various types of workers in the labor market, ultimately providing important implications for organizations and policy makers to provide workers with an efficient working environment.

Population Aging and Wage Structure: An Empirical Study of Cohort Size Effect on Korean Male Worker since 1990 (인구 고령화와 임금구조: 1990년대 이후 한국 남성 근로자의 세대규모효과에 대한 실증분석)

  • Recently Korea is expected with the decrease of population in working ages and also population structure, especially age structure, has changed as aging goes faster. This study focuses on the relationship between age structure and wage structure to analyzes the cohort size effect on the change of age-earnings profile. Our empirical analysis based on Wright(1991)'s model takes weighted OLS regression using the male worker's data of Ministry of Labor 'Wage Structure Survey'($1990{\sim}2006$). In pooled data, we take the conclusion that the cohort size effect was found in high school and college graduate workers, but the effect is different between them. The labor market entry effect of high school graduate workers is negative(-) and his persistent effect is positive(+). On the other hand, the cohort size effect of college graduate workers have appeared the opposite directions in contrary with the existing results of Welch(1979) and Wright(1991). This results are seen as the possibility that college graduate worker has the benefit of wage level by his relative cohort size in spite of high unemployment of young graduate. It will be the sign of need that we should interest in the change of age structure with balancing the labor supply side approach and the demand side study which the previous studies was mainly tended to focus on.

  • 근래 우리나라에서도 평균수명이 길어져 노동의욕이 있는 중고령자가 증가하는 한편, 출산율이저 하되어 젊은 근로자의 수가 감소되고 있다. 통계청의 인구통계과의 추계에 의하면 2000년에는 60세 이 상이 총인구에 점하는 비율이 10.7%, 65세 이상은 6.8%가 되고, 2020년에는 60세 이상이 19.5%, 65세 이 상도 12.5%에 도달한다는 것이다. 인구노령화로 인한 고령화 사회에 대한 준비를 서둘러야 할 때라고 생각된다. 또 고령화 사회로 되면 젊은 연령층의 경제적 부담이 증가되므로 중고령자의 노동인구를 이대 로 방치해 두는 것은 국가적으로나 사회복지적으로나 불경제라고 할 수 있다. 그런데, 문제가 되는 것은, 중고령자를 취업시키는 것이 오히려 사회의 생산성을 저하시키거나 경제적으로 불리하게 되어서는 안되는 것과 중고령노동자 자신의 안전을 확보해야 하는 것이다. 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위해서는 고용에 있어 서 어떠한 점에서 중고령노동자에게 특징과 문제가 있는가를 분명히 할 필요가 있다. 고령자는 청년자 보다 노동능력이 떨어지는 특징과 문제가 있는가를 분명히 할 필요가 있다. 고령자는 청년자 보다 노동능력이 떨어지는 경향이 있지만 개인차도 크고 고령자 중에는 청년자의 기능에 비교해도 뒤떨어지지 않는 자도 있다. 연령만으로 노동능력을 판정하는 것은 적절한 방법이라고 할 수 없다. 문헌에 의하면 역연령(chornological age)이 25세의 경우, 생리적 연령은 23세에서 27세로 4년 차이가 있다고 한다. 이러한 생리적 연령의 차이는 역연령이 더해감에 따라서 점차 크게 되어 역연령이 45세에서는 12년, 80세 에서는 20년이나 된다는 것이다. 이것은 인간에 있어서 시간적 경과를 나타내는 역연령 이외에 신체적 기능연령(functional age)가 있다는 것을 의미하는 것이다. 한편, 생산현장에서는 자동화, 기계화가 진보되어 육체적인 노동이 경감된 결과, 중고령자라도 할 수 있는 작업이 많아지고 있다. 또, VDT (Visual Dislay Terminal) 작업과 같은 정보처리 작업의 수요가 증가하여 그 인재의 부족이 지적되고 있다. 따라서 중고령자의 기능을 조사하여 어떠한 작업에 적합한가를 판단하는 것이 중요한 과제로 되었다. 그러나 노동에는 많은 기능이 관여 하고, 그 내용에 따라서 요구되는 기능이 서로 다르기 때문에 노동적응능력의 기본적인 기능으로 보여지는 것에 좁혀서 작업능력의 연령증가 변화에 대하여다원적 평가를 하는 것이 실제적이라고 할 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 인간이 가지고 있는 다수의 기능중에서 수지교 치성과 연령증가와의 관계를 조사한다. 만약 연령증가 만으로 수지교치성을 평가 할 수 없는 경우에는 어떠한 요인이 수지기민성의 변화에 영향을 미치는가를 검토한다.

The Factor Influencing Health Status among Female Office Workers (여성 사무직 근로자의 건강에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of work factor/home factor on health status in women office workers. This study investigated the relationship of various influencing factors between health status using claims data of the The Fifth Korean Working Conditions Survey sample from 2017. To this end, we employed logistic regression analysis using sample data from 3,115 female office workers. Logistic regression results indicate that influential factors were ages, employment status, satisfaction with the work environment, sex ratios at workplace, economic burden, childcare burden, housework burden. We discussed several policy and academic implications. As women become more active in society, the number of female workers is increasing. If employers improve the health status of female workers, they will benefit from improved productivity in their business. Therefore, improving the work conditions of the those female workers is very important. Also, practical policy considerations should be needed for female workers to strengthen their social capital in order to enhance their status of health.

  • Recently the arts and cultural sector is drawing attention as a new growth engine of the Korean economy. The paper is empirically analyzed on the gender wage differentials in the arts and cultural sector and specially focused on decomposing the wage differentials between the manufacturing sector and the arts and cultural sector. Our results may be partly useful for explaining the existing phenomenon of the arts and cultural sector in Korean labor markets, for example, young, highly educated, part-time contracts, less gender discrimination, etc. The results might provide somehow the policy directions of reducing the gender wage differentials.

  • The purpose of this study was to derive association between company's fringe benefits and retirement planning. The study analyzed the 2016 Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing(KLoSA) and a total of 1,740 participants was included. To analyze the relationship between the number of the company's employee fringe benefit and the retirement planning, multiple logistic regression was conducted. As a result, we found multiple variables affecting the retirement planning including not only the number of the fringe benefits, but also the age, marital status, residence, private health insurance status, and subjective health status. Successful retirement planning for wage workers benefits not only the individuals or government, but companies also gain benefits such as improved productivity of workers and a better corporate image, so further research is needed on the effective implementation of the system, and the role of government to support this.

  • 20년 3월부터 본격화된 코로나 팬데믹은 전세계경제에 큰 충격으로 불확실성은 더욱 커져 경제생태계 대변혁의 시대를 맞이하고 있는 가운데 고령 인구의 증가, 생산인구의 감소와 더불어 20년 12월 기준 직장의 폐업과 정리해고, 경영부진 등 비자발적인 일자리를 떠난 사람이 19년 대비 48.9%(2020 통계청) 증가, 직장인의 퇴직 평균연령도 51.7세로 직장인 의지와 관계없이 조기 은퇴가 불가피한 상황이다. 한편 직장 근로자 10명중 8명은 창업할 의지가 있는 것으로 나타나 이제는 직장인의 창업은 선택이 아닌 필수로 인식하고 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 직장인의 기업가정신과 지속학습, 보상만족, 고용가능성이 창업의지와 어떠한 상관관계를 가지고 있는가를 조사하고 혁신행동이 매개역할을 하는지에 대해 분석하는데 있다. 본 연구에서는 직장 재직자의 기업가정신과 직장생활 과정에서 지속학습, 보상만족, 고용가능성이 창업의지에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구를 혁신행동의 매개효과를 중심으로 진행하였다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 재직자의 기업가정신과 지속학습, 보상만족, 고용가능성이 혁신활동을 증가시키고, 증가된 혁신활동이 창업의지에 영향을 미칠 것이라는 인과적 경로를 검증하고자 한다. With Corona의 불확실한 경제여건에서 조직은 생존을 위한 끊임없는 변화를 추구함에 따른 재직자의 고용불안은 가중될 것이며, 100세 시대를 준비해야 하기에 창업은 필수적 상황으로 창업의지를 종속변수로 설정하여 본 연구를 진행하였다.

The Influence of Health Outcomes on Work Compensations for Elderly Workers (장년근로자의 건강수준이 근로보상에 미치는 효과분석)

  • We examine the effects of the self-reported subjective and the objective health indexes on work compensations. The compensations consist of monetary factors, such as wages, and non-monetary factors reflecting job risks such as the workplace accidence. The wages and workplace injuries are clearly affected by gender and age differences as the subjective and objective health factors of elderly workers are combined with physical and systematic work environments. Mental health problems such as work depression are more serious especially for high income elderly groups. The elderly workers experienced with physical problems and chronic illnesses are led to the decrease in wages and the increase in safety accident risks at work sharply. Therefore, we need to provide supporting services, retirement planning designed by companies, supported by the government enhanced risk working conditions and the weakness on protecting jobs.
