Expression of Clusterin in the Salivary Gland under Restraint Stress (구속 스트레스에 의한 타액선 조직내의 Clusterin 발현)

  • The belief that stress leads to illness has a long history. A number of the orofacial disease are also closely associated with stress. Despite research in the relationship of stress and the orofacial diseases leading to statistically significant correlations, the pathology remains vague. In the present study, the expression of clusterin, a stress protein responsible for antiapoptosis and cytoprotection, under restraint stress condition was observed in the submandibular gland, one of the major salivary glands. Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 2 groups: normal group and restraint stress group. The rats of restraint stress group were placed in the stress cages and then sacrificed at day 0, 3 and 5 day of the experiment. After that, the submandibular glands of all the rats were excised immediately. The levels of clusterin proteins and mRNA in the tissues were measured by immunohistochemistry and Northern blot analyses, respectively. The results were as follows: 1. In the immunohistochemistry, clusterin protein was detected only immediately after the application of restraint stress. 2. In the restraint stress group, at day 3 and 5, histologically apoptosis was induced with karyorrhectic and pyknotic changes. 3. By the restraint stress, acinic cells were destructed earlier than ductal cells. 4. In the Northern blot, mRNA of clusterin was expressed only immediately after the application of restraint stress. The overall results suggest that as an early response to stress, clusterin is expressed in the glands to protect the glandular cells from the stress. But if stress is so strong and prolonged that it can exceed the stress adaptability of the cells, then the cells may undergo apoptosis instead of producing clusterin. A Research on the User's Cognitive Stress According To Font Size displaying on Mobile Electronics (휴대용 전자기기에 표시하는 문자크기와 유저의 인지적스트레스)

  • This study is about the effect on the user's cognitive stress by font size when they read on PDA(Personal Digital Assistant). The evaluation was done through both subjective evaluation and physiological one, which is brain wave test, while the research and analysis were focused on the relationship between the user's cognitive stress and font size. The two final results were found out as follows. 1) Font sizes, which were tested, were 8, 10, 12, 14, and 16 points. Among theses, font size 14 was the least stressful for the users, while the most stressful size was found out 8 points. 2) The cerebral cortex reaction according to the font size activated occipital lobe, parietal lobe of occipital visual area. Here we could come to a very Important conclusion that the smaller font size on mobile information appliances made users the more stressed.

Mycorrhizal Colonization Effects on Some Physiological Parameters Related to Drought Stress in White Clover (화이트 클로버에서 마이코라이자 접종이 가뭄 스트레스와 관련된 생리학적 요인에 미치는 영향)

  • To investigate the physiological effects of mycorrhizal colonization on drought stress tolerance in white clover, the responses of leaf water potential (${\Psi}_{PL}$), relative water content (RWC), leaf dry mass, photosynthesis rate, transpiration, stomatal conductance, proline and ammonia were assessed periodically during 7 days in non-AM and AM plants under wellwatered or drought-stressed conditions. Under well-watered conditions, the examined parameters were not significantly changed or very little affected by AM symbiosis. Drought decreased water potential, relative water content, photosynthesis rate, transpiration and stomatal con ductance by 68.6%, 22.7%, 97.7%, 83.9% and 84.9%, respectively, in non-AM plants, meanwhile 46.8%, 13.4%, 50.3%, 44.8% and 54.7%, respectively, in AM plants. In addition, drought increased ammonia and proline by 31.8% and 162%, respectively, in non-AM plants, while 20.9% and 76.9%, respectively, in AM plants. These results clearly showed that mycorrhizal colonization significantly relieved the responses of physiological parameters to drought stress in white clover.

The Effects of Abscisic Acid (ABA) on $Cd^{2+}$-induced Physiological Responses in Commelina communis L. (Abscisic acid가 $Cd^{2+}$에 의한 닭의장풀이 생리적 반응에 미치는 영향)

  • Three-weeks old Commelina communis was transferred to Hoagland solution (Control, 100 μM Cd/sup 2+/, 100 μM Cd/sup 2+/ + 100 μM ABA, 100 μM Cd/sup 2+/+50 mM KCl) and grown for a week in the solution and then a number of physiological activities were investigated. In cases of Cd/sup 2+/ and Cd/sup 2+/ + ABA treatments, the growth of the plants was inhibited to 71 % and 81 %, respectively, when compared with the control, but there were no significant difference of plant growth between Cd/sup 2+/ and Cd/sup 2+/ + KCl- treated plants. In the treatments of Cd/sup 2+/, Cd/sup 2+/ + ABA and Cd/sup 2+/ + KCl total chlorophyll contents were reduced to 32%, 41% and 29%, respectively. In chlorophyll fluorescence experiments, Fv/Fm ratios were also reduced to 14∼20% and about 23%, respectively, according to the light intensity by Cd/sup 2+/ and Cd/sup 2+/+ABA-treated plants. Water stresses were increased by the treatment of Cd/sup 2+/, Cd/sup 2+/ + ABA and Cd/sup 2+/ + KCI. In Cd/sup 2+/ accumulation experiments Cd/sup 2+/ transport into the plant by ABA was not affected, but the accumulation of Cd/sup 2+/ into the roots was elevated to 13% when compared with the control. Cd/sup 2+/ transport into the root was markedly inhibited to 60% by KCl. Therefore, it could be concluded that ABA did not reduce the toxicities of Cd/sup 2+/, but enhanced Cd/sup 2+/ - induced toxicities and KCl showed no effect on Cd/sup 2+/ - induced toxicities.

Relationship between Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and Serum Cortisol Level to Life Stress (생활 스트레스에 대한 심박변이와 혈청 코티졸과의 관계)

  • Purpose The physiological and biochemical responses of healthy men and women to life stress were measured in order to investigate the correlation between these two responses under the normal situation. Materials and Methods The population of the research is some randomly chosen health college students located in Daejeon City during the period from August to September 2014, and the sample of 94 students. Heart rate variability (HRV), blood pressure (BP) were selected as physiological stress indices and serum cortisol level was used as a biochemical stress biomaker. The data which is collected used SPSS19.0 programs and frequency and percentage and T-test, correlation. Results Male showed the significant higher value of serum cortisol level (p<0.05), BP (p<0.05), and LF/HF ratio of HRV (p<0.05) than female. The difference of BP between correlated significantly with serum cortisol level (p<0.05). The LF/HF ratio of HRV also correlated significantly with serum cortisol level (p<0.05) Conclusion We suggest that LF/HF ratio of HRV and BP may be good indices for the assessment of life stress.

Psychophysiological Characteristics of Insomnia Patients Measured by Biofeedback System (바이오피드백을 이용하여 측정한 불면증 환자의 정신생리적 특징)

  • Background and Objectives: Insomnia is the most prevalent sleep disorder in the general population and is considered to be a disorder of hyperarousal. The aim of this study was to measure the psychophysiological responses in insomnia patients using a biofeedback system, and to compare them with results from normal healthy subjects. Materials and Methods: Eighty patients with primary insomnia (35 males and 45 females, average age $49.71{\pm}12.91years$) and 101 normal healthy controls (64 males and 37 females, average age $27.65{\pm}2.77$) participated in this study. Electromyography (EMG), heart rate (HR), skin conductance (SC), skin temperature (ST), and respiratory rate (RR) were recorded using a biofeedback system during 5 phases (baseline, stress 1, recovery 1, stress 2, recovery 2) of a stress reactivity test, and average values were calculated. Difference in values between the two groups in each corresponding phase was analyzed with independent t-test, and change in values across phases of the stress reactivity test was analyzed with paired t-test (all two-tailed, p<0.05). Results: Compared to normal controls, insomnia patients had higher EMG in all 5 phases (baseline : $7.72{\pm}3.88{\mu}V$ vs. $4.89{\pm}1.73{\mu}V$, t = -6.06, p<0.001 ; stress 1 : $10.29{\pm}5.16{\mu}V$ vs. $6.63{\pm}2.48{\mu}V$, t = -5.84, p<0.001 ; recovery 1 : $7.87{\pm}3.86{\mu}V$ vs. $5.17{\pm}2.17{\mu}V$, t = -5.61, p<0.001 ; stress 2 : $10.22{\pm}6.07{\mu}V$ vs. $6.98{\pm}2.98{\mu}V$, t = -4.37, p<0.001 ; recovery 2 : $7.88{\pm}4.25{\mu}V$ vs. $5.17{\pm}1.99{\mu}V$, t = -5.27, p<0.001). Change in heart rate across phases of the stress reactivity test were higher in normal controls than in insomnia patients (stress 1-baseline : $6.48{\pm}0.59$ vs. $3.77{\pm}0.59$, t = 3.22, p = 0.002 ; recovery 1- stress 1 : $-5.36{\pm}0.0.59$ vs. $-3.16{\pm}0.47$, t = 2.91, p = 0.004 ; stress 2-recovery 1 : $8.45{\pm}0.61$ vs. $4.03{\pm}0.47$, t = 5.72, p<0.001 ; recovery 2-stress 2 : $-8.56{\pm}0.65$ vs. $4.02{\pm}0.51$, t = -5.31, p<0.001). Conclusion: Psychophysiological profiles of insomnia patients in a stress reactivity test were different from those of normal healthy controls. These results suggest that the sympathetic nervous system is more highly activated in insomnia patients.

The Effect of Korean version of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program on Chronic Pain of Workers. (한국형 마음 챙김 명상에 기반한 스트레스 감소 프로그램이 만성통증에 미치는 효과)

  • This study developed a program that integrated MBSR-K and progressive muscular relaxation for the health and well-being of patients with chronic pain, and proved its effectiveness by studying 40 chronic pain patients. This program used nature of mind, body scanning meditation, breath meditation, mindfulness meditation, Hatha yoga and progressive muscular relaxation to ease chronic pain. Whenever negative feelings and emotions such as fear, anxiety, and pain occurred, the program focused on those emotions and observed the outcome. This program, which was based on the results of the preceding studies, was composed of eight courses. Major findings of the study are as follows: First, the meditation group that was composed of patients with chronic pain had significant decrease of physical symptoms compared to the control group. Second, to confirm the outstanding features of the participating patients with chronic pain that brought change in the effect of the program, characteristics of clients were analysed. Third, the program factor that influenced the effectiveness of the treatment process was evident when the training was performed twice a week rather than having once a week of training and second week for homework.

Effects of Blood Indicators and Stress on Obesity by Gender in Korean Adults (성별에 따른 혈액 지표 및 스트레스가 비만에 미치는 영향)

  • This study aimed to investigate the effect of subjective factors (figure recognition and stress) and objective factors (blood biochemical parameters) on body mass index by gender difference in Korean adults. This study analyzed 3,343 subjects older than 20 years according to gender using the Sixth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database. Specifically, male subjects had higher body mass index than female subjects (p < .001) and were more frequent in the obese group. Female subjects had higher stress and platelet score than male subjects (p < .001). Male subjects had significantly higher white blood cell counts (p < .001). The factors affecting the occurrence of obesity by gender difference was highly associated with subjective figure recognition (95% CI = 0.026~0.045, p < .001), stress (95% CI = 0.487~0.925, p = .015) and white blood count (95% CI = 1.232~1.392, p < .001) in females. These findings demonstrate a gender-specific difference in recognizing subjective factors and especially the objective factors of white blood cells and platelets affecting obesity. These results can be used for obesity education or fundamental data for establishing a nursing arrangement program for Korean adults.

Effects of Psychological and Physiological Factors on Asthma in Korean Adults (심리 및 생리적 요인이 성인천식에 미치는 영향)

  • This study aimed to investigate the association between asthma and emotions, such as depression, stress, and health awareness. We observed the effects of blood indices on asthma in Korean adults. Data from 5852 adults were taken from the 2017 Seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and analyzed using a multivariate logistic regression model. The probability of asthma occurrence in over 65 years old was higher than in 19-44 years old (OR = 1.48), and asthma occurrence was high in subjects with low educational (OR = 1.89) and income (OR = 2.07) levels. With regard to marital status, singleness and divorce and dye were found to have increased the probability of asthma occurrence by 1.62- and 2.30-folds, respectively. The restriction of activities was another factor that increased with asthma occurrence (OR = 2.39). In terms of emotions, general health awareness was significantly 3.45 times increased the probability of asthma occurrence at their health bad awareness. Furthermore, depression (OR = 1.782) was shown to have increased asthma occurrence. The blood index of C-CRP 1.12 times increased the probability of asthma occurrence. The factors that influenced asthma occurrence were age, education, income, marital status, the restriction of activities, general health awareness, depression, and C-CRP. Emotional factors and blood indices are potential risk factors for the development of asthma in Korean adults. By understanding the increased risks of asthma occurrence with general characteristics and emotional factors and blood indices, the management and prevention of asthma should include the management of emotional factors.
