Investigation of the Emotional Characteristics of White for Designing White Based Products (백색 제품 디자인을 위한 감성적 특성 연구)

  • In this study we investigated emotional characteristics of various whites which have slightly different nuances to suggest guidelines that help designers to select appropriate colors when designing white based products. The study involved three different procedures. In experiment 1, we selected 20 emotional words through a survey (N=30) among 60 words, which we picked from literature review that was thought to be appropriate to evaluate product colors. In experiment 2, we evaluated the emotional characteristics of 13 basic colors from the I.R.I Hue & Tone 120 system (N=30) using previously selected emotional words, to find relative emotional positions of white in comparison to other colors. Based on the ratings, factor analysis was conducted and consequently four factors were extracted: flamboyant, elegant, clear, and soft. Accordingly, the emotional characteristics of the 13 colors were profiled and compared with those of white. Finally, in experiment 3, we conducted an evaluation of emotional characteristics on 25 whites with different nuances facilitating the four factors obtained in experiment 2. The color stimuli used in experiments were measured in terms of CIE 1976 $L^*a^*b^*$, and regression analysis was performed in order to predict the emotional characteristics through the L, a, and b values of a color, as long as that is perceived as a white. Throughout three empirical studies, we observed three overruling tendencies : First, there are four important factors when evaluating product color - flamboyant, elegance, clearness and softness; second, white is dominantly the most elegant in comparison to other colors; third, the emotional factors of the study were affected by some combinations of attributes of colors rather than by all three-hue, saturation and brightness. In addition, the equations derived from the regression analysis in experiment 3, it is expected that designers may predict the emotional distinction between nuances of white.

Influence of Men's Clothing and Hairstyle on the Evaluation of Professionalism and Preference (남성 의복과 헤어스타일이 전문성 및 선호도 평가에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of perceiver's gender, clothing, and hairstyle on the visual evaluation of men's professionalism and preference. A quasi-experimental method by questionnaire was used. The experimental design was a $2\times8\times2$ (perceiver's gender $\times$ clothing $\times$ hairstyle) factorial design by 3 independent variables. The stimuli were 16 photographs of a man in his twenties. The upper clothing of the man included tailored collar jackets in beige and dark blue colors, and jumpers and sweaters in beige, dark blue, and red colors. The lower clothing of the men included jean pants. Two types of the hairstyles included short hair and medium length hair. The subjects were 208 men and 223 women in Seoul, Korea. Wearing a beige sweater with jean pants was evaluated high in intellectual image, a red jumper was perceived low in intellectual image, and a beige tailored collar jacket was evaluated low in potent image. Men's short hairstyle was evaluated to be more professional than the medium length hair. Male perceivers liked short hair more than medium length hair, but female perceivers evaluated both hairstyles similarly. In the case of women, the preferences of tailored collared jacket and soutien collared jumper were similar, but jumper was preferred to jacket in the case of men. Male perceivers showed more positive feedback towards jean pants with soutien collared jumper than jeans with tailored collared jacket, which indicated that men showed more conservative attitude towards the outfit than women. The man who was wearing a jumper with short hair was evaluated positively and the man who was wearing a jacket with medium length hair was evaluated negatively when the attires were coordinated with jean pants. In conclusion, medium length hairstyle with a beige jacket and short hairstyle with a red sweater were evaluated as professional image; and the results indicated that clothing and hairstyle interact with each other and influence the evaluation of professionalism.

Enhancing Visual Perception Using Color Processing Of Mobile Display (색상처리를 통한 감성 모바일 디스플레이)

  • Mobile display panel is small so that users are often difficult to perceive images clearly. About image we perceive much through colors and therefore we propose color fitting approach for clear perception even on the small and low quality LCD panels. Various color modifications have been studied and used in commercial software packages. For mobile usage, our approach instantly enhances color images by modifying colors in a way to contrast differences of them. The method includes tone enhancements (which contrast dark and bright sides) and color enhancements (which reduce saturation for pure colorants). Based on color theory, our method also modifies color values towards specified complementary and preference colors. We term this color fitting. This approach enables displaying photos, multimedia messages, videos and digital media broadcasting (DMB) for better perception in real-time on mobile devices. The Effect of the Jacket Style and Color, and Shirt Style on Men's Image Perception (재킷 스타일과 색, 셔츠 스타일이 남성의 이미지 지각에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the style and the color of jacket, the style of shirt, and stimulus-manufacturing method on men's image perception. A quasi-experimental method by questionnaire was used, and the experimental design was $2{\times}2{\times}2{\times}2$ (jacket style${\times}$jacket color${\times}$shirt style${\times}$stimulus-manufacturing method) factorial design. Computer simulation picture and photograph were used for stimulus-manufacturing method. Subjects were 377 women in the metropolitan area of Seoul. The data were analyzed by using factor analysis, Cronbach's ${\alpha}$-reliability coefficient, and three-way ANOVA. The men's image derived five dimensions by factor analysis; neatness, ability, activity, individuality, and sociability. Tailored jacket with jean pants was evaluated higher in ability, individuality, and sociality than jumper with jean pants, and jumper was evaluated higher than tailored jacket in activity. The indigo jacket was evaluated lower in individuality in the picture stimuli than in the photograph stimuli. The beige tailored jacket with jean pants was evaluated higher in activity than indigo tailored jacket. However, the indigo jumper was evaluated higher in activity than beige jumper. Dress shirt under the tailored jacket was evaluated higher in ability and individuality than T-shirt under the tailored jacket. T-shirt under the jumper was evaluated higher in activity than dress shirt.

Time-course of attentional bias in anxious and normal participants (불안관련 주의편향의 시간적 경과 분석)

  • Attention and emotion interact intimately. Anxiety, for example, modifies attentional mechanisms to enhance the processing of threat-related information. But how can it modulate attention? Studies of the emotional Stroop task showed clearly that color naming was interfered with more by negative word distractors than by neutral distractors in anxious participants. However, few studies have investigated in what stage an emotional stimulus biases attention. The present study investigated the locus of interference in the emotional Stroop task by manipulating the SOA (Stimulus Onset Asynchrony) between the word distractor and the color target (0ms, 120ms, or 240ms). Results showed that interference occurred only with 0ms of SOA for anxious participants, whereas for non-anxious participants, there was no interference effect. These results support the view that the attentional mechanism was modulated in early stage of information processing by anxiety.

The Effect of Static Balance on Colors and Music Tempo Stimulation for Normal Children (색과 음악 빠르기 자극이 정상 아동의 정적 균형에 미치는 영향)

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of sensory stimulation for static balance on normal children. Sensory input was consisted of colors, and music tempo stimulation. Methods : Participants were consisted of 20 normal kindergarten children ranging in age from six to seven years. The static balance was tested by a BPM(Balance Performance Monitor). In this study one-way ANOVA was used and the statistical significance level of results was determined at 0.05. Results : 1. According to color stimulation, there was no significant difference in static balance among red, yellow, green(p>0.05). 2. According to music tempo stimulation, there was no significant difference in static balance, among the high music tempo and low music tempo children in a general environment(p>0.05). 3. However, both green color and low music tempo stimulation have a little effect on static balance on normal children. Conclusion : These results indicate the possibility that the application method of green color and low music tempo stimulation may help in the improvement of static balance for the disabled children. This study will be used as the foundational data of therapeutic environment for the disabled children.

  • Early 1920s, Joseon film production began with Japanese colonial rule organization and expanded into civilian. These films were influenced by the documentary film what recorded the scenery and the custom also influenced by kino drama that displayed the place of a dramatic incident. So these films developed into the form emphasize on place. At that time, hollywood serial films were popular. So the first Joseon films shooted a picturesque place and a landmark of the city in the background where heros took a risk. In the style stakes, Joseon films looked very similar to Japanese films. shooted long-take and long-shot, it had rhythm with narration of benshi and emphasized on visual excitation by using color. Early 1920s Joseon films which were similar to Japanese films changed from Japanese style to Hollywood style caused by Na woon-kyu's .

  • 최근 생활수준 및 생활환경의 향상에 힘입어 청결 및 쾌적을 추구하는 것이 사회적 현상으로 나타나고 있다. 요즘처럼 현대화된 시대에 '왜 항균제가 필요한 것일까' 라는 자연스러운 의문이 발생하게 되지만 현실은 항균제를 이용한 다양한 항균제품, 항균가전제품, 항균가공 내ㆍ건자재 및 항상 신선한 선도를 유지할 수 있는 제품 등이 호황을 누리고 있는 것이 현실이며 그 시장 규모는 3,000억원을 상회하고 있다. 이러한 항균 가공제품이 호평을 받는 사회적 배경은 우리를 둘러싼 주변 삶의 경제환경 신장에 따른 쾌적성 추구와 밀접한 관련이 있을 것이다. 이처럼 항균기능이 부여된 제품이 호평을 받고 있음에도 불구하고 국내에서는 항균제품의 주 기능 역할을 하는 항균제에 대한 개발은 초기단계로 국내 시장에서 많은 연구가 이루어지고 있는 실정이다. 국내의 경우, 유기 항균제의 사용이 전체 사용량의 80%를 차지하고 있고, 제올라이트나 인산염을 무기 담체로 항균성 금속 이온(Ag, Zn)을 물리적으로 결합시킨 무기 항균제가 개발된 것이 최근의 기술 수준이다. 이러한 유기 항균제는 미생물의 번식을 억제 또는 사멸시키기 위한 것이지만, 생체의 피부 세포에도 영향을 줄 수 있는 피부 자극원의 하나로 그 사용이 점차로 제한되고 있다. 무기 항균제는 안정성이나 항균력에서는 유기항균제 보다는 뛰어나지만 가격(경제성)이나 색(Color), 사용성 (Application)측면에서는 여러 가지 문제를 나타내고 있다. 귀금속이므로 가격이 고가이며, 금속고유의 색으로 회귀하려는 플라즈몬 효과에 의해 색(Color)의 조절이 불가능, 분말형태이므로 지류에 첨가시키는 방법 등이 큰 문제로 부각되고 있다. 이 러한 문제점을 해결할 수 있는 기술이 나노기술이다 나노기술(Nano-Technology)은 물질을 분자, 원자단위에서 규명하고 제어하는 기술로서 원자, 분자를 적절히 결합시킴으로서 기존 물질의 변형, 개조는 물론 신물질의 창출을 가능케 하는 기술이다. 나노기술은 여러분야로 세분화되지만 그중 산업화에 가장 접목이 용이한 기술이 나노입자(Nano-Particle)제어 기술이며, 나노입자는 통상적으로 입자크기가 수 nm에서 100nm이하 크기의 넓은 표면적을 가진 콜로이드 상의 불균일 분산입자를 말한다. 나노입자(Nano-Particle)는 기존의 입자($\mu\textrm{m}$)보다 물리적 및 광학적 성질이 우수하고 그 자체의 기능면에서도 탁월하기 때문에 국내외의 여러 산업에서도 기존제품의 품질 향상 및 기능성부여, 기존 공정의 개선 및 생산 원단위 절감 등 경제적, 생산적인 측면을 고려하여 적합한 나노입자를 채택, 적용하고자 하는데 많은 노력을 기울이고 있다. 이에 천연 항생제로 알려진 Ag, 즉 항균 및 탈취, 전기적 기능이 우수한 은(silver, Ag)을 나노(nm) 입자희 제조하고 이와 더불어 이산화티탄(TiO2) 복합 분체를 제조하여 제조된 나노 입자 및 복합 분체를 사용함으로써 환경 친화적이며 다양한 용도로 활용 가능한 소재 개발에 연구 내용을 두고 있다. 본 연구를 통한 기대 효과로서 환경성 측면에서는 환경 친화적인 나노 입자의 제조로 기능성 나노 입자에 친 환경성을 부여하여 유기계 항균제 대체 효과를 발현하고 이를 제품에 적용함으로써 다양한 기능을 가진 신소재 제조에 있다. 또한 경제적인 측면에서도 고부가 가치의 제품 개발에 따른 새로운 수요 창출과 수익률 향상, 기존의 기능성 안료를 나노(nano)화하여 나노 입자를 제조, 기존의 기능성 안료에 대한 비용 절감 효과등을 유도 할 수 있다. 역시 기술적인 측면에서도 특수소재 개발에 있어 최적의 나노 입자 제어기술 개발 및 나노입자를 기능성 소재로 사용하여 새로운 제품의 제조와 고압 기상 분사기술의 최적화에 의한 기능성 나노 입자 제조 기술을 확립하고 2차 오염 발생원인 유기계 항균제를 무기계 항균제로 대체할 수 있다. 이와 더불어 안료의 형상 균일화 기술을 확보하여 가격 경쟁력 및 부가가치 향상을 기대할 수 있다.

Properties of Sunglass Lenses by Non-Destructive Test for the Sunglass Standards (비파괴식 검사를 통한 선글라스의 품질에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, we compared the properties of 23 high and 55 low price sunglass lenses with the standards in the ordinary optical properties, materials, coloration, UV, IR and luminous transmittance, color acceptance for traffic signal, chromaticity and contrast sensitivity. The ordinary optical properties of the lenses met comparatively the requirements of the KS standard. The HIGH-type and LOW-type lenses were primarily made by glass and acrylate, respectively. In the coloration, HIGH-type was in group around neutral color but LOW-type was distributed widely on the line between 570 nm and 485 nm. There are fails in 7% of HIGH-type and 18% of LOW-type in the stimulus purity of the luminous transmittance. Wavelength of the UV/VIS cut-off was over 350 nm for HIGH-type but 6% of LOW-type was under 350 nm. In the erythemal UV, all HIGH-type met the needs of standards but 5 LOW-type failed with DIN standard In the near UV, KS standard worked in stringency, and HIGH-type showed more failure than LOW-type. The characteristics of the IR transmittance of HIGH-type was better than that of LOW-type. In the color acceptance of traffic signal, all HIGH-type met the needs of ANSI standards but 21.8% of LOW-type failed with the standard. In the contrast sensitivity tested with various coloured sunglasses, the value increased with increasing of Land decreasing of test distance. In view of the results so far, HIGH-type met with excellent properties as compared with LOW-type.

Color Correction Method of CIS Digital Camera for Mobile Phone (휴대폰용 CIS 디지털 카메라의 컬러 보정법)

  • In the digital camera system, CMOS image sensor (CIS) is widely used because its size and weight become smaller and power consumption becomes lower. However, there are common problems that colors of the recorded image do not match those of the photographed object and that spectral sensitivity of the CIS used in different cameras varies largely in each case. Therefore, color correction is needed because the spectral sensitivity of the CIS in each color is neither the same color component for most standard colors nor the appropriate color representation for any output devices. In the conventional method, a color correction is empirically obtained by a large number of iterative experiments, but the result is not so satisfied. In this paper, a new method to obtain the efficient color correction matrix for digital camera using CIS is proposed. We obtain camera transfer matrix under the certain white-balance point, and color correction matrix that makes the transfer characteristic of digital camera close to the transfer characteristic of ideal camera is obtained. The experimental results show that the transfer characteristic of digital camera by the proposed method is close to that of the ideal camera. In addition, the image quality of pictures of digital camera using the proposed method is dramatically improved.
