  • In this paper, a new scheme to recognize a finger shape in the depth image captured by Kinect is proposed. Rigid transformation of an input finger shape is pre-processed for its robustness against the shape angle of input fingers. After extracting contour map from hand region, observing the change of contour pixel location is performed to calculate rotational compensation angle. For the finger shape recognition, we first acquire three pixel points, the most left, right, and top located pixel points. In the proposed algorithm, we first acquire three pixel points, the most left, right, and top located pixel points for the finger shape recognition, also we use geometrical features of human fingers such as Euclidean distance, the angle of the finger and the pixel area of hand region between each pixel points to recognize the finger shape. Through experimental results, we show that the proposed algorithm performs better than old schemes.

  • A smiling face usually has a positive effect on interpersonal relationships by delivering a warm impression. However, the stereotype content model and compensation effect between warmth and competence suggested that warmth perceptions caused by a smiling face could influence competence perceptions negatively. This study examined the negative impact of the advertising endorser's smile on purchase intention in an expensive product category by adopting the self-construal level. The study results showed that consumers with independent-self construal (vs. interdependent self-construal) showed a lower purchase intention when exposed to an ad containing an endorser's smile. In comparison, consumers with interdependent-self construal (vs. independent self-construal) showed a lower purchase intention when exposed to an ad without an endorser's smile. Thus, this study demonstrated a moderating role of self-construal in the relationship between advertising endorser's smile and purchase intention. These findings provide valuable theoretical and practical implications for effective advertising strategies in the expensive product category.

  • Low-speed impact was localized on a stiffened composite structure, using 4 FBG sensors with 100 kHz-sampling rate interrogator and devised localization algorithm. The composite specimen consists of a main spar and several stringers, and the overall size of the specimen's surface is about $0.8{\times}1.2m$. Pre-stored reference data for 247 grid locations and 36 stiffener locations are gathered and used as comparison target for a random impact signal. The proposed algorithm uses the normalized cross-correlation method to compare the similarities of the two signals; the correlation results for each sensor's signal are multiplied by others, enabling mutual compensation. 20 verification points were successfully localized with a maximum error of 43.4 mm and an average error of 17.0 mm. For the same experimental setup, the performance of the proposed method is evaluated by reducing the number of sensors. It is revealed that the mutual compensation between the sensors is most effective in the case of a two sensor combination. For the sensor combination of FBG #1 and #2, the maximum localization error was 42.5 mm, with average error of 17.4 mm.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the factors which influence biotechnology scientists' data sharing intention. This study employed Ostrom's theory of collective action. The target population of this study includes scientists and students of biotechnology field in South Korea. A total of 411 responses which collected by e-mail were used for the final data analysis. The summary of this study is as follows. First, norm of data sharing and academic reciprocity were found to have significant positive influences on data sharing intention directly. Second, perceived community trust was found to have significant positive influences on data sharing intention when academic reciprocity was the mediator. Third, academic reputation showed the moderating effects on the relationship between norm of data sharing and academic reciprocity, and between norm of data sharing and data sharing intention. These findings show that researchers can approach the data sharing behaviors by using the mechanism of trust, norms, reciprocity, and reputation and indicate necessity for a development of academic reputation system to promote more data sharing behaviors of researchers.

  • In this paper, a modified version of PRML is discussed to reduce nonlinearity in digital high-density storage devices. We propose a PRML with a nonlinear compensator which can reduce nonlinear interaction between the stored flux regions on the storage channel, and apply it to recording channels with three different densities. By comparing its performance with the existing PRML through computer simulation, we confirm that the nonlinear intersymbol interference increasing with high-density recording channels can be reduced effectively by the PRML with a nonlinear compensator.

  • In this paper, we propose a layered video coding scheme which can generate multi-layered bitstream for heterogeneous environments. A new motion prediction structure with temporal hierarchy of frames is developed to afford temporal resolution scalability and the wavelet decomposition is adopted to offer spatial acalability. The proposed scheme can have a higher compression ratio than replenishment schemes by using motion estimation and compensation which can further reduce the temporal redundancy, and it effectively works with dynamic adaption or errors using dispersive intra-subband update (DISU). Moreover, data rate scalability can be attained by employing embeded zerotree wavelet (EZW) technique which can produce embeded bitstream. Therefore, the proposed scheme is expected to be effectively used in heterogeneous environments such as the Internet, ATM, and mobile networks where interoperability are required.

  • The system performance is analized for the optimal design of the transmission links with dispersion management and optical phase conjugation for compensating for the optical signal distortion due to the group velocity dispersion and optical nonlinear Kerr effects in the long-haul optical transmission system. That is, the effect of the relation of the residual dispersion in both half transmission sections with respect with optical phase conjugator (OPC) on the net residual dispersion (NRD) is assessed. It is conformed that the best compensation is obtained in NRD of 10 ps/nm, which is only controlled by the difference of the residual dispersion between each half transmission sections.

  • The compensation characteristics are investigated as a function of the position an optical phase conjugation (OPC) in the optical transmission links with a randomly distributed residual dispersion per span (RDPS). The simulation results show that the optimal net residual dispersion (NRD) is decided to be 10 ps/nm and -10 ps/nm by precompensation and postcompensation, respectively, which are independence of the OPC positions.
