  • Our ultimate purpose is to investigate the potential change in regional surface climate due to the global warming and to produce higher quality regional surface climate information over the Korean peninsula for comprehensive impact assessment. Toward this purpose, we carried out two 30-year long experiments, one for present day conditions (covering the period 1971-2000) and one for near future climate conditions (covering the period 2021-2050) with a regional climate model (RegCM3) using a one-way double-nested system. In order to obtain the confidence in a future climate projection, we first verify the model basic performance of how the reference simulation is realistic in comparison with a fairly dense observation network. We then examine the possible future changes in mean climate state as well as in the frequency and intensity of extreme climate events to be derived by difference between climate condition as a baseline and future simulated climate states with increased greenhouse gas. Emphasis in this study is placed on the high-resolution spatial/temporal aspects of the climate change scenarios under different climate settings over Korea generated by complex topography and coastlines that are relevant on a regional scale.

  • The agricultural ecosystem is one of the major sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In order to search for climate change adaptation options which mitigate GHG emissions while maintaining crop yield, it is advantageous to integrate multiple models at a high spatial resolution. The objective of this study was to develop a tool to support integrated assessment of climate change impact b y coupling the DSSAT model and the DNDC model. DNDC Regional Input File Tool(DRIFT) was developed to prepare input data for the regional mode of DNDC model using input data and output data of the DSSAT model. In a case study, GHG emissions under the climate change conditions were simulated using the input data prepared b y the DRIFT. The time to prepare the input data was increased b y increasing the number of grid points. Most of the process took a relatively short time, while it took most of the time to convert the daily flood depth data of the DSSAT model to the flood period of the DNDC model. Still, processing a large amount of data would require a long time, which could be reduced by parallelizing some calculation processes. Expanding the DRIFT to other models would help reduce the time required to prepare input data for the models.

  • This paper draws new guidelines on the current method in Land Suitability Assessment (LSA), enforced to identify potential of parcels .elated to agricultural productivity, preservable value, and economic viability. In order to make recommendations of current LSA methodology, this study analyzes the issues related to the parcel-based LSA and addresses its inappropriateness f3r incorporating characteristics of each parcel. Through case studies and sensitivity analyses using GIS, the results show that (1) the $10\times10m$ grid-based LSA is much better assessment method than parcel-based one, because it gives detailed informations on attributes of each parcel; (2) more than one-distance factor should be taken into account to calculate the appropriate potential measure; and (3) the characteristics of public facilities or urbanized areas including size, density, and land use should be incorporated into the attraction variable of ny Potential model. Finally future research areas are outlined.

  • A dynamically-interfaced multi-grid finite difference model for simulation of tsunamis in the East Sea(Choi et al.) was established and further applied to produce detailed feature of coastal inundations along the whole eastern coast of Korea. The computational domain is composed of several sub-regions with different grid sizes connected in parallel of inclined directions with 16 innermost nested models. The innermost sub-region represents the coastal alignment reasonably well and has a grid size of about 30 meters. Numerical simulations have been performed in the framework of shallow-water equations(linear, as well as nonlinear) over the plane or spherical coordinate system, depending on the dimensions of the sub-region. Results of simulations show the general agreements with the observed data of run-up height for both tsunamis. The evolution of the distribution function of tsunami heights is studied numerically and it is shown that it tends to the log-normal curve for long distance from the source.

  • Tsunamis along the east coast of Korea accompanying the 1983 East Sea central region earthquake is hindcasted with numerical models for tsunami propagation and inundation. Both linear and nonlinear models were used to compute propagation and elevation of tsunami waves on the coastal area of Korea. For the mesh refinement, grid system was divided into two sub-regions in Korean coastal area with final 10m grid resolution at interior area where serious inundation was observed. Calculated tsunami height distribution showed a general agreement with coastal observation. With interior detailed mesh system at mid-east coast region, the inundatin at the port of Imwon were qualitatively well reproduced by inundation and runup model.

  • The joint of existing steel grid composite deck is composed of lap splice of reinforcing bar with end hooks and field-placed concrete. In this study, bending tests of deck joint composed of concrete shear key and high tension bolts are carried out for the design variable, concrete shear key strengthened with steel plate or not, and test results are compared with flexural performance of the existing deck joint. Test results showed that the mechanical deck joint has about 30% ~ 60% more ultimate bending strength than the existing joint. According to analysis results of moment-curvature relationship, the initial bending stiffness of the existing deck joint is some higher than that of mechanical joint. But, after crack failure the structural performance of the existing deck joint is rapidly reduced. Furthermore, the deck joint with the strengthened shear key with steel plate has more bending moment capacity than the deck joint without strengthening. And strengthening of shear key has positive influence on the increase of bending stiffness.

  • A multi-nesting grid storm surge model, Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute-Storm surge model, was calibrated to simulate storm surges. To check the performance of this storm surge model, a series of numerical experiments were explored including tidal calibration, the influence of the open boundary condition, the grid resolutions, and typhoon paths on the surge heights using the typhoon Maemi, which caused a severe coastal disasters in Sep. 2003. In this study the meteorological input data such as atmospheric pressure and wind fields were calculated using CE wind model. Total 11 tidal gauge station records with 1-minute interval data were compared with the model results and the storm surge heights were successfully simulated. The numerical experiments emphasized the importance of meteorological input and fine-mesh grid systems on the precise storm surge prediction. This storm surge model could be used as an operational storm surge prediction system after more intensive verification.

  • For the joint connection of the precast steel grid composite decks, the prefabricated joint which is composed of concrete shear key and high-tension bolts was already proposed. In this study, for the purpose of increasing the bending stiffness and bending strength of the proposed prefabricated joint section details of the proposed joint are modified, and through experimental tests the bending performance, such as stiffness and strength of a modified joint, is compared with those of the proposed joint. Test and analysis results show that the shear cracks in the concrete shear key are clearly reduced by the strengthening of the shear key using shear studs and additional rebars. According to analysis results of the moment-curvature relationship, bending stiffness of the modified joint is about 47% greater than the stiffness of the proposed joint. Furthermore, the modified joint has about 32% greater bending strength than the proposed joint. Compared to specimens without the joint the modified joint has same or slightly higher bending strength, but about 37% lower bending stiffness.
