  • This study was investigated discharge and water quality for rainy days at the inflow streams (Gog-Kyo, Mu-Han, Sap-Kyo and Nam-Won) into Lake Sap-Kyo from June to November of 1999. The eventual aim of this study was to improve the water quality of Lake Sap-Kyo. Therefore, in order to reduce inflow pollutants loading into Lake Sap-Kyo, we investigated characteristics of stormwater runoff and estimated pollutant loading for the rainy season. The results of that Sap-Kyo stream is $5.75\;m^3/sec$ flow and influences water quantity of Lake Sap-Kyo greatly during the dry weather. Gog-Kyo stream influence to quantity of Lake Sap-Kyo greatly for the rainy days. Gog-Kyo stream and Sap-Kyo stream are $12.13\;m^3/sec$ and $8.49\;m^3/sec$, respectively. The reason is that the watershed area of Gog-Kyo stream is larger than other streams. When we prepare to plan management to improve the water quality of Lake Sap-Kyo, we have to consider that runoff characteristics by land use. Among the annual total pollutants loading inflow Lake Sap-Kyo, the ratio of non-point pollutants loading estimated that SS, BOD, T-N and T-P are 62%, 43%, 41% and 27%, respectively. Therefore, in order to improve water quality of Lake Sap-Kyo, we have to reduce non-point pollutants loading.

  • The composition of primary minerals of sand fractions and secondary minerals of clay fractions were investigated on the polder soils developed from alluvio-marine deposits near to Sapgyo-lake, constructed a sea dike across river estuary located in the west coast. The effects of a topographical sequence on the physico-chemical properties and mineralogical characteristics were evaluated using XRD, DTA, and TG with the chemical composition of $H^+$ saturated clays. Soils located on the seashore side were more silt fraction, higher pH and exchangeable cations than the others. The dominant minerals of soil parent materials are in the order of quartz, feldspars, micas, chlorite and amphibole. According to the greater distance from the lake, the amount of 1:1 minerals increased, but 2:1 minerals decreased. The dominant clay minerals of polder soils are kaolinite, vermiculite and illite. Hydroxy interlayer minerals are abundant in the clay fractions derived from the soil parent materials which have relatively low soil pH.

  • In this study, a methodology is developed for flood runoff analysis considering the interaction between interior floodplain and channel. Riparian lowland is modeled as storage areas by HEC-RAS and is connected with main channel through gravity drainage structure and pumping stations. As a result, we were able to compute the difference between runoff into the interior floodplain and delayed runoff to main channel from interior floodplain. This allowed us to compute the storage change in the interior floodplain and corresponding inundation areas. Furthermore, the levee is modeled as a lateral structure and the flood from the main channel to interior floodplain is modeled by installing a weir on top of it. In addition, levee breach is also modeled so that flooding from main channel to interior floodplain can be considered. Computed flooding depth in the storage areas are compared with elevation to identify the inundated areas and flood maps can then be produced for a desired time or for the extent of flooding given a flooding depth. Output from this modeling effort can provide many useful information for flood planning such as flow depth in main channel, flooding depth and area in interior floodplain. The method was applied to Sapgyo river basin and the comparison with observed flood events showed that it can reproduce the observation fairly well, hence proving the utility of the method.

  • In this study, the annual and monthly groundwater recharge for the Sapgyo-cheon upstream basin in Chungnam Province was evaluated by water balance analysis utilizing WetSpass-M model. The modeling input data such as topography, climate parameters, LAI (Leaf Area Index), land use, and soil characteristics were established using ArcGIS, QGIS, and Python programs. The results showed that the annual average groundwater recharge in 2001 - 2020 was 251 mm, while the monthly groundwater recharge significantly varied over time, fluctuating between 1 and 47 mm. The variation was high in summer, and relatively low in winter. Variation in groundwater recharge was the largest in July in which precipitation was heavily concentrated, and the variation was closely associated with several factors including the total amount of precipitation, the number of days of the precipitation, and the daily average precipitation. This suggests the extent of groundwater recharge is greatly influenced not only by quantity of precipitation but also the precipitation pattern. Since climate condition has a profound effect on the monthly groundwater recharge, evaluation of monthly groundwater recharge need to be carried out by considering both seasonal and regional variability for better groundwater usage and management. In addition, the mathematical tools for groundwater recharge analysis need to be improved for more accurate prediction of groundwater recharge.

  • This study was conducted in order to analyze a flooded area by the overflow of a stream using hydrological and hydraulic models and to estimate the utility of the SAR satellite image by comparing a protected lowland inundation area with a past inundation area map. The research area selected for this study is Sapkyocheon, which was flooded in August 1999. The flood stage was analyzed to select an inundation area by applying flood events in August 1999. By importing analyzed flood stage data into TIN data of WMS, the inundation area of a protected lowland was selected and then compared with an flood hazard map of WAMIS. An inundation area is selected by the SAR satellite image in comparing the image of August 4, 1999 (inundation time) with the image of September 8, 2002 (after inundation). The method of selecting an inundation area with the hydraulic model of HEC-RAS can be used to select an inundation area of external overflow, but it has the limit of selecting an inundation area concerning the internal drainage. The method of using the SAR satellite image can complement the limit of an inundation area of an internal drainage but accuracy of inundation area depends on using SAR satellite image acquired at time of maximum depth.

  • The purpose of this study investigates the delivery characteristics according to the load of pollutants by calculating the delivery rate of targeted areas on pollutants in Sapkyo reservoir. The main rivers of Sapkyo reservoir are Namwoncheon, Dogocheon, Sapkyocheon, Muhancheon and Gokgyocheon. The delivery rate and their characteristics of five major rivers during rainfall season are investigated. As th result, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total nitrogen (T-N) and total phosphorous (T-P) of total delivery rate are calculated by 0.40, 0.34 and 0.08, respectively. The delivery rate of T-P compares to other water quality is investigated relatively low. Looked at the overall characteristics of the watershed, the delivery rate of T-N and T-P is little change in the rate of the year, too. The delivery rate of T-N is calculated from 0.2 to 0.3 in the dry season, and from 0.31 to 0.39 in a flood, respectively. The delivery rate of T-P is calculated to more than 0.3 in the dry season, and 0.11 in a flood. It is similar values which the average annual delivery rate of T-P is 0.08. Therefore, the measured delivery rate of Sapkyo reservoir can be applicable such as a delivery rate of similar features of the terrain and land use.

  • This study was mainly focused on the development of GIS based decision support system to easily make mitigation scenarios and to conveniently simulate water quality for TMDL. The study area was the 31km section of upper Sapgyo stream in Geum river basin, and QUAL2E model was adopted. GIS DB was built through the collection of the data which includes point/non-point source attributes and various thematic maps. The amounts of discharged loads of BOD, T-N and T-P from unit watershed were estimated respectively. Finally, the system, which can operate water quality simulation through simply modifying their values, was developed. The hypothetical three mitigation scenarios were applied, thereby the most efficient mitigation scenario could be chosen by comparison of the results based on GIS. Therefore, it is expected that the developed system can facilitate the decision makers to select the best alternative through the analysis of the available BMPs. Also, it can be used to develop new scenarios using different methods and algorithms. In the future, more study need to be made to enhance its applicability in the perspective of developing mitigation scenarios through the management of individual pollutant sources and extending study areas.

  • This study examined dwelling site from among the sites of the Neolithic age found in the Asan Bay(牙山灣) area, and the temporal-spatial location and meaning of the dwelling site (settlement). The majority of the settlements in the area are of a square style but some coexist with rectangular-style settlements, which is noteworthy. The dwelling sites of the Neolithic age found in Asan Bay area are mostly located in a ridge of hilly areas, divided into gentle, low areas (20~50 meters above sea level) and relatively high areas (50~80 meters above the sea level). Although location strongly corresponded to the residents' subsistence and the technical levels within the culture, it likely was greatly affected by natural environment where they lived, as well. In examining radiocarbon dating results and the excavated artifacts, the settlements found in Asan Bay were determined to belong to the period II(3,500~3,000 B.C.) stated in the Relative Chronological table of Dwelling sites in the Neolithic age, written by the author. Said Dwelling sites are proven to have a close relationship with those found on the coast of Gyeonggi Province(京畿道) and in the Geum River(錦江) valley. This is deemed to be the result of expansion and interchange between Gyeonggi Province(京畿道) group and Geum River(錦江) valley group, who constituted the large settlements. Additionally, the Daecheon-ri type dwelling sites in the Geum River valley were verified to be the result of exchange, and spread to the Asan Bay area in the same era. Two forms of Dwelling sites coexisted dynamically in the Asan Bay area around 3,500 B.C. Such a phenomenon resulted primarily from the expansion of the dwelling site due to the introduction of primitive agriculture, as well as environmental (temperature), biological and social changes at those times.
