  • Various type of in-situ and laboratary tests were performed in order to evaluate the stiffness of sedimentary soft rock. In triaxial compression tests of sedimentary soft rocks, axial strains from the axial displacement of the loading piston or specimen cap conventionally were considerably larger than those measured. tocally on the lateral surfaces of specimen, due to the bedding errors at the top and bottom ends of a specimen. A local deformation transducer was used to measure axial strains free from the bedding error ranging from 0.001% to about 1%. In ultra-sonic wave tests, the elastic modulus of unconfined spec imens was smaller than that of confined specimens, due probably to microfracks. Young's modulus Ed from ultra-sonic wave tests and those at small local strains from triaxial tests were similar, both of which agreed very well with Young's modulus Er from field shear wave velocities. Young'a modulus from the field behaviour was virtually similar to that obtained by reducing Er based on the strain level-dependency of stiffness evaluated by the triaxial tests.

  • The feasibility of using neural networks to model the complex relationship between piezocone measurements and the undrained shear strength of clays has been investigated. A three layered back propagation neural network model was developed based on actual undrained shear strengths, which were obtained from the isotrpoically and anisotrpoically consolidated triaxial compression test(CIUC and CAUC), and piezocone measurements compiled from various locations around the world. It was validated by comparing model predictions with measured values about new piezocone data, which were not previously employed during development of model. Performance of the neural network model was compared with conventional empirical method, direct correlation method, and theoretical method. It was found that the neural network model is not only capable of inferring a complex relationship between piezocone measurements and the undrained shear strength of clays but also gives a more precise and reliable undrained shear strength than theoretical and empirical approaches. Furthermore, neural network model has a possibility to be a generalized relationship between piezocone measurements and undrained shear strength over the various places and countries, while the present empirical correlations present the site specific relationship.

  • Aging effect of sands showed insignificant result in comparison with that of clay, so that it has not been studied so far. But, as penetration resistance increase has been observed with the lapse of time after deposition and disturbance, aging effect of sands has been actively investigated by field tests, and recently many researchers are performing not oかy field tests but also laboratory tests on sands, so aging effects of sands have been also examined by laboratory tests. In this study, to observe the aging effect of undrained static shear behavior for Nak-Dong River sand, undrained static triaxial tests were performed with changing relative density$(D_r)$, consolidation stress ratio$(K_c)$, and consolidation time. These tests showed that modulus within elastic section increased as consolidation time increased, and in addition, phase transformation point strength$(S_{PT})$ and critical stress ratio point strength $(S_{CSR})$ also increased. But pore water pressure ratio$(u/{p_c}')$ decreased as consolidation time increased, so with this various result, aging effect of static shear for sands can be observed as well.

  • In this study, a series of the isotropic compression-expansion tests and the drained triaxial tests were performed on Pocheon granite soil with various the dry densities of $16.67kN/m^3$, $17.26kN/m^3$ and $17.65kN/m^3$. Using the tests results the characteristic of the parameters of Lade's single hardening constitutive model were investigated. The soil parameters such as kur and n related to elastic behavior, m and ${\eta}_1$ related to failure criterion, c and p related to hardening function and ${\psi}_2$ and ${\mu}$ related to plastic potential show in a positive linear relationship with the dry density. Since the soil parameters h and representing yield function do not change much to relative density and also are closely related to failure criterion, they can be replaced by failure criterion. We also observed that predicted values from the Lade's single hardening constitutive model were well consistent with the observed data.

  • A new failure criterion for concrete, which takes into account the effect of the intermediate principal stress, is proposed. The new criterion, which takes the advantages from both the Mohr-Coulomb and the Willam-Warnke criteria, is linear in the meridian section, while its octahedral section is always smooth and convex. Fitting the triaxial compression data with the proposed criterion shows the high performance of the new criterion. A new formula for the factor of safety of concrete is defined based on the new failure criterion and it is employed in the stability analysis of the concrete plugs installed in the pilot plant. The new formula for the factor of safety measures the degree of closeness of a stress state to the failure surface in the octahedral plane. Finally, 3-D finite element analyses of pilot plant were carried out to obtain the stress distributions in the plugs. Then, the stress distributions are converted to those of factor of safety by use of the proposed formula. Based on the distribution of factor of safety in the concrete plugs, the stability of the tapered and wedge-shaped plugs is evaluated.

  • To evaluate the engineering characteristics of aggregate base materials, cyclic triaxial, CBR and permeability tests were performed for 15 samples. The CBR values of aggregate base materials have wide range from 32 to 110(average 81) and the amount of swelling in submerged conditions has below 0.04mm. The Modulus of aggregate base materials were significantly affected by volumetric stress, linear volumetric model was best for fitting. The modulus of aggregate base materials were determined within range of 100MPa~600MPa, 80~270 and 0.1~0.6 for model coefficient $k_1$ and $k_2$ respectively. The empirical correlation model was suggested that prediction the modulus from the basic properties obtained from particle size distribution test and compaction test. The coefficient of determination of the proposed correlation model was 0.423 for model coefficient $k_1$, 0.920 for model coefficient $k_2$ and 0.872 for modulus with stress level.

  • The shear strength of cohesionless Soils results from particle-to-particle friction and structural resistance by interlocking. And, the shear strength of soils is subjected to vary depending on the internal states and external condtions. If the volume change occurring in the soils and stress-strain relationships under the internal and external changes can accrurately he described, it is possible to predict the behaviors of soils. To accomplish these objectives a series of drained triaxial compression tests and isotropic compression test was performed on the Banwol sand at different relative densities ranging from 20% to 80% and different confining pressures ranging from 0.4kgf/cm$^2$ to l2kgf/cm$^2$. The results and main conclusions of the study are summarized as follows; 1.When the relative density or the confining pressure is increased, the maximum deviator stress is increased. The ratio of the maximum deviator stress and the confining pressure is linearly proportional to the relative density. 2.It is observed that the dilatancy depends not only upon its relative density but also the confining stress, and that the maximum deviator stress is obtained after the diatancy occurs. 3.The volume of sands undergoes initial contraction prior to the dilatancy occurred by strain softening. The dilatancy rate eventually approaches the critical state or a constant volume. 4.At lower strains, Poisson's ratio approaches a certain minimum value regadless of the state of materials. At larger strains, however, the ratio is increased as the relative density is increased. 5.It is observed that the modulus of elasticity is linearly proportional to the relative density and the pressure. 6.When the relative density is increased, the friction angle of sands is linearly increased. 7.When the relative density is increased, the expansion index and the compression index are linearly decreased, and the ratio of the two is about 1/3.

  • Triaxial tests on sand-silt mixture specimens under low and high confining pressures were performed to understand their shear behaviors. The fines content in the mixture is lower than the threshold value. A series of tests under different conditions including fines contents (0%, 9.8%, 14.7%, 19.6%), density of specimen (controlled by different compaction energies of $E_c=22kJ/m^3$, $E_c=504kJ/m^3$), confining pressure (100 kPa, 1 MPa, 3 MPa, 5 MPa) were performed to investigate influences of these factors. Based on the test results, the threshold fines content, where the dominant structure of mixture changes from sand-matrix to fines-matrix, decreases with the increase of confining pressure. Under very high confining pressures, as a result of sand particle crushing, the behavior of the dense specimen is similar to that of the loose specimen which shows hardening, compression behavior, and shear strength increases with increase of fines content. In conclusion, silt is granular material like sand, and its influence on shear behavior of sand-silt mixture is very different from that of plastic fines on sand-fines mixture.

  • The structural stability of fill dam largely depends on the engineering behavior of rock materials used as main zone for dam construction and it is necessary to understand well the stress-strain characteristics of fill materials as well as shear strength property. In addition, the numerical analysis of fill dam requires a thorough study for calibrating material properties and parameters of a coarse-grained soil constitutive model. In this paper, large triaxial test results for Buhang-dam fill materials are analyzed and constitutive model parameters are calibrated based on the test results. It is shown that MD constitutive model is capable to predict the stress-strain behavior of dense and loose coarse-grained soils used for Buhang-dam construction based on the comparison study between the experimental test result and numerical simulation.

  • Weathered granite soil is the most representative as a surface soil in Korea. In this paper, the dynamic properties and settlement characteristics of Korea granite soil are studied through the dynamic triaxial compression tests. The dynamic characteristics are very important on the analysis of the foundations under dynamic loading such as machine vibration and earthquake. Soil samples having different grain sixtes were prepared at the relative densities between 80oA and 90oA and tested to measure shear moduli and damping ratios at each level of shear strain. The measured shear moduli of weathered granite soils showed large variations according to the grain sizes, confining pressures, relative densities and shear strains. Sandy weathered granite had a little larger dynamic properties than the average values of the sand studied by Seed and Idriss. Pot the well compacted granite soils, little residual settlements occured due to dynamic loading.
