Development of T. urticae was studied on the leaves of eggplant grown in hydroponics with potash contents of 0 mM, 2 mM, 6 mM, and 12 mM. As the levels of potash increased, that of nitrogen decreased and that of P, K, Mg increased in the plant. While contents of crude protein and fiber decreased, those of ash and sugar increased. Carbohydrate content was the highest at 2 mM. Water contents increased as those of potash increased with the exception at 0 mM. Biomass was the heaviest as 552.7 g at 6 mM and the lightest at 0 mM. Leaf thickness and the content of chlorophyll increased as the content of potash increased. Laboratory leaf disc tests provided with various potash levels revealed that feeding and oviposition preferences of T. urticae were high at 6 mM and 12 mM, respectively. Ratio of damaged leaf by naturally occurring T. urticae on eggplants of 99 days post-transplant in the greenhouse was the highest at 6 mM. Development of immature stages of T. urticae shortened as the levels of potash increased with a less tendancy in male than in female. No differences were detected in adult longevity and oviposition period but the number of eggs laid was the most as 84.7 at 6 mM and the least as 40.6 at 0 mM. There were no differences in the rate of egg hatch and the ratio of sex. $R_o,\;r_m,\;and\;{\lambda}$ were the highest at 6 mM and the lowest at 0 mM. T and Dt were the lowest at 6 mM and the highest at 0 mM. There was a descending trand of T. urticae developmet when levels of potash either gets high or low in the hydroponics.
This study was performed to evaluate the differences in resistance of rice varieties to biotypes of the brown planthopper (BPH), capable of surving on the Milyang 30 and Milyang 63 varieties which have Bph 1 and bph 2 gene for resistance, respectively. The rice varieties tested were Milyang 30, Cheongcheong, Milyang 63 and Gaya which have been reported as having resistant genes for the BPH. The check varieties were Chucheong and Sangpoong which have no resistant gene. The degree of resistance to the BPH biotypes indicated that Milyang 30, Cheongcheong, Milyang 63 and Gaya varieties were highly resistant to the biotype 1. But their reactions against biotype 2 and 3 were variable, namely Milyang 30 and Cheongcheong were susceptible to biotype 2, and Milyang 63 was susceptible to biotype 3. In the esterase isozyme patterns of brown rice the bands of ${\beta}-1,\;{\beta}-3\;and\;{\beta}-5$ were detected in Chucheong and Sangpoong, while the bands of ${\alpha}-1,\;{\beta}-2\;and\;{\beta}-5$ were detected in the test varieties which have genes for resistance. However, the bands of ${\beta}-5$ in Milyang 63 and Gaya were stronger than those of Milyang 30 and Cheongcheong varieties. In the root of 10-days seedling, the esterase bands of ${\alpha}-2,\;{\beta}-2\;{\beta}-4\;and\;{\beta}-5$ were detected in Chucheong and Sangpoong, while the bands of ${\alpha}-1,\;{\beta}-1\;{\beta}-3\;and\;{\beta}-5$ were detected in the tested different varieties. But the bands of ${\alpha}-1\;and\;{\beta}-5$ in Milyang 63 and Gaya were stronger than those of Milyang 30 and Cheongcheong varieties.

Reproductive characteristics of Rhodeus pseudosericeus (Pisces: Acheilognathinae) was investigated at the Heukcheon (River), Yangpyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do, Korea from January to July in 2012. This fish prefers heavily vegetated stagnant pool with Phragmites japonica and Salix koreensis and area with high proportions of sand and mud. The standard length of the population indicated that 13~22 mm group is 0-year old, 30~45 mm group is 1-year old, 45~55 mm group is 2-year old and 45~70 mm group is more than 3-year old (June in 2012). The sex ratio of female to male was 1 : 0.80. The spawning season was from March to June with water temperatures in the range $11.0{\sim}26.2^{\circ}C$. The embryos were found with no egg mass in Unio douglasiae sinuolatus and the number of those was 1~22 ($5.8{\pm}5.51$). The number of the embryos found in each of the four parts of the mussel gill was 1~9 ($2.7{\pm}2.16$) in left outer, 1~2 ($1.5{\pm}0.71$) in left outer, 1~5 ($1.8{\pm}1.79$) in left outer and 1~22 ($5.8{\pm}5.51$) in left outer.
We developed a Raman lidar system for remote measurement of carbon dioxide present in atmospheric space. An air-cooled laser with 355-nm wavelength and a 6-inch optical receiver was used to miniaturize the Raman lidar system, and a scanning Raman lidar system was developed using a two-axis scanning device and a photon counter. To verify the performance of the developed Raman lidar system, a gas chamber capable of maintaining a concentration was located at a distance of about 87 m, and the change in Raman signal according to the change in the concentration of carbon dioxide was measured. As a result, it was confirmed that the change in the Raman scattering signal of carbon dioxide that appeared for a change in carbon dioxide concentration from about 0.67 to 40 vol% was linear, and the coefficient of determination (R2) value, which indicates the correlation between the carbon dioxide concentration and Raman scattering signal, showed a high linearity of 0.9999.
In this study, the distribution of Cantao ocellatus in Korea occurred at Jindo, Tongyoung, Gwangju and Taean including Jejudo in 2012 and was coincidentally in accordance with the distribution of Mallotus japonicus as a host plant. The adult emerges in M. japonicus occur from late June to early July and can be observed until the end of October. The investigation of the female and male was measured, developmental characteristics, host plant and oviposition preference under the conditions of temperature $25^{\circ}C({\pm}2)$, humidity 65%(${\pm}2$), day length 16L:8D, by indoor breeding. For females and males respectively, average body lengths were 26.20 mm and 23.88 mm, body widths 11.35 mm and 10.57 mm, head widths 3.84 mm and 3.64 mm, probosics lengths 7.90 mm and 7.27 mm, antennal lengths 9.87 mm and 9.69 mm, anterior leg lengths 12.50 mm and 12.27 mm, intermediate leg lengths 14.61 mm and 13.12 mm, posterior leg lengths 16.90 mm and 16.53 mm, and fresh weights 0.46 g and 0.31 g. It was seen that two kinds of C. ocellatus had prickles at the end of the pronotum which had developed in the fifth instars. The female is distinguished from the male by the reproductive organ and the spotted pattern on the abdominal segment. The preference of drinks was fruit, leafstalk, midrib, and branch in Mallotus japonicus (Thunb.) Muell. Arg., Mallotus japonicus 'Variegatus', Ricinus communis L., Lonicera japonicus var. repens (Siebold) Rehder, Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck and Zelkova serrata (Thunb.) Makino.
To establish a method for measuring varietal resistance against rice stem maggot in field and pot, 20 varieties were used in $1981{\sim}1983$. The degree of injured stems by the 1st generation larvae was significantly correlated with that of injured panicles by the 2nd ($r=0.864^{**}$). There was no ovipositional preference in rice stem maggot. The larval mortality after artificial infestation varied widly from 5.6 to 100% in varieties and that of the resistant varieties was high after boring. There was a negative correlation between number of injured leaves and larval mortality after artificial infestation ($'81:r=-0.833^{**},\;'82:r=-0.918^{**}$). It is considered that larval mortality mainly caused by antibiosis and larval mortality 20 days after infestation on rice seedlings is ideal for evaluating the varietal resistance to rice stem maggot. Resistant varieties are Nagdongbyeo, Jinjubyeo and Chucheongbyeo susceptible varieties, Keumgangbyeo, Milyang 23, Baigyangbyeo and Milyang 30.
This study was performed to evaluate the resistance of three different rice cultivars to the BPH biotypes 1, 2, 3 and their hybrid progenies, Nilaparvata lugens STAL. The rice cultivars tested were Chucheongbyeo, Cheongcheongbyeo and Milyang 63. The following characteristics of hybrid progenies were compared with these of their parents: Seedling response, Host preference, feeding amount, Esterase polymorphism of the brown rice. According to the responses of rice seedlings to the three BPH biotypes and their crosses progenies nymph, Chucheongbyeo was shown highly susceptible to their nymphs. The Cheongcheongbyeo was susceptible to the biotypes 2 and the Milyang 63 was susceptible to the biotype 3. The Cheongchengbyeo and the Milyang 63 were moderate to the biotypes 2(female)${\times}$3(male) and 3(female)${\times}$2(male). The preference in feeding and oviposition of three BPH biotypes and their hybrid progenies to Chucheongbyeo were shown higher than to another cultivars. The two preference were not only shown highly in Cheongcheongbyeo by the biotypes 2,2(female)${\times}$3(male) and 3(female)${\times}$2(male) but also in Milyang 63 by the biotypes 3,2(female)${\times}$3(male) and 3(femlae)${\times}$2(male). The feeding amount of female adult was much on three BPH biotypes and their hybrid progenies in Chucheongbyeo and on the biotypes 2 and 3(female)${\times}$2(male) in Cheongcheongbyeo, On the biotypes 3 and 3(female)${\times}$2(male) in Milyang 63 were as same as the above. The esterase bands of Est ${\alpha}-1,\;{\beta}-4,\;{\beta}-5\;and\;{\beta}-I$ were detected on brown rice of all the tested cultivars. The bands of Est ${\beta}-2\;and\;{\alpha}-I$ were detected on Cheongcheongbyeo (Bph 1 gene for resistance) and Milyang 63 (bph 2 gene for resistance). The Est ${\beta}-3\;and\;{\beta}-1$ of esterase bands were detected on Chucheongbyeo.
This study was conducted to investigated the distribution, ecological character and life cycle of Black Soldier Fly(BSF), Hermetia illucens, to determine effects of BSF on composing ability to the livestock feces. The distribution of BSF was defined in all parts of the country in Korea. Its main habitat was found to be areas near cattle sheds, feces sheds, living waste dump grounds, and food waste dump grounds. Excellent species of the bio-conversion using the livestock feces were selected out of two kinds of solider flies(Hermetia illucens and Ptecticus tenebrifer). And effects of BSF on composing ability to the livestock feces were pig feces 0.5 g, cattle feces 0.43 g and chicken feces 0.3 g per a larvae of BSF. In the examination of the ability of BSF to decompose food waste, volume of the livestock feces decreased by weight pig feces 77, cattle feces 83.62 and chicken feces 80%. Observed characteristics of BSF larvae and pupae stage were by developmental stage may be summarized as follows: size and length of larvae and pupae of BSF were higher than in pig feces and mixed sawdust treatments. In order to develop artificial indoor rearing techniques, The pupation and emergence rate were not visible the difference but important factor of the mating and egg-laying was a sun light. And it was visible the difference in mating ratio. Mating rate of H. illucens by seasonal change was the highest from May to July. Mating mostly occurred between 10 : 00 and 12 : 00 during which light intensity is high. As the egg-laying medium for artificial egg collection, calf feed and food waste were most effective. The ratio of egg-laying medium is waste food : sawdust(1 : 1) in volume. For egg-laying materials, flower foam and wood with holes were used; holes sized 3 ~ 5 mm in diameter, 7 ~ 10 mm in depth were most preferred for egg-laying.
Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of dietary activated charcoal mixed with wood vinegar (AC) on broiler performance and antibiotics residue in eggs. In experiment 1, a total of low hundred fifty, 1-day-old male broile. chicks (Ross) were divided into 6 groups, consisting 3 replicates of 25 birds each, and 134 one of the six experimental diets: devoid of AC and antibiotics (negative control), devoid of AC with 0.1% antibiotics (positive control), devoid of antibiotics with 1% AC, with 0.1% antibiotics and 1% AC, devoid of antibiotics with 2% AC, with 0.1% antibiotics and 2% AC, for 5 wks. Feed consumption and body weights were measured weekly. At the end of the experiment, eight birds from each group were selected and sacrificed. The relative weight of organs and characteristics of breast muscle were investigated. There were no significant differences in feed intake, body weight gain and feed conversion rate among the treatments. There were also no significant differences in the relative weight of breast meat, leg and liver. The abdominal fat tended to be decreased by the dietary AC. Significant differences were shown (P<0.05) in meat redness (a) and yellowness (b) among the treatments. However, the sensual characteristics of breast muscle was not affected by the dietary treatments. There were significant differences in total microbes, Coli forms and lactic acid bacteria (P<0.05) among the treatments. In experiment 2, a total of ninety, 40-wk-old Hy-line Brown laying hens were divided into 3 groups, consisting 3 replicates of 10 birds each and fed medicated control diet devoid of AC or diets containing 1% AC and 2% AC for 2 wks. The residue of antibiotics in Plasma and egg Yolk were significantly decreased (P<0.05) in 2% AC group compared to that of control. This study suggest that dietary AC may improve the external quality of edible meat and reduced antibiotics residue in chicken eggs without affecting laying performance.
The present study was conducted to compare the disease resistance to fowl typhoid among White Leghorn (WL) known as possessing greater genetic resistance to Salmonella, Rhode Island Red (RIR) susceptible to the disease and their mating crossbreed, WL ${\times}$RIR. Also, it was carried out to compare fowl typhoid-resistance among Hyline white${\times}$Hyline brown(HwHb), Hw${\times}$lsa brown(Hwlb), Isa white${\times}$lb(Iwlb), Iw${\times}$ Hb(IwHb) and Ib ${\times}$ Iw(IbIw) in order to select crossbreed chickens which have disease resistance to fowl typhoid and simultaneously produce the brown eggs which our domestic consummers prefer There was no death of WL chickens challenged with Sal. gallinarum at each 2, 5 and 8 wk of age, while average 86.2 to 64.1% of RIR chickens tested died at the same challenge age during the test period of 2 weeks. Their maiting crossbreed, WL ${\times}$ RIR were intermediate between the two breeds. weight gains of tested chickens were significantly higher in WL and WL ${\times}$RIR without difference between them than RIR. In recovery rate of tested strain of Sal. gallinarum from braun, heart, fiver, spleen and cecum of chickens challenged, WL ${\times}$RIR fell between the other two breeds, with somewhat higher rate then WL but much lower then RIR. In the disease resistance determination test using HwHb, Hwlb, Iwlb, IwHb and IbIw$.$ crossbreed chickens experimentally infected with Sal. gallinarum, it was recognized that all of crossbreeds tested developed marked resistance to fowl typhoid, based on the results judged by the measurement parameters of mortality, weight gain, recovery rate of challenged strain of bacteria, and positive rate of agglutination antibody, and HwHb had a tittle higher disease resistance then ethers.
