  • In this study, a submerged plate-type breakwater is considered, which is supported by elastic foundation. This breakwater makes use of wave phase interaction among the incident, diffracted and radiated waves. We apply a three-dimensional singularity distribution method within the linear potential theory in order to describe the wave field. The submerged plate is assumed to be rigid and the elastic support be a linear spring with constant stiffness. A typical rectangle plate is exemplified for numerical calculation. The thickness of the plate is carefully selected in order to guarantee the solution to be stable by checking the condition number of the system matrix. A parametric study is carried out for examining the effect of the stiffness of the elastic support on performance of the breakwater. We also examine the effect of the submerged depth.

  • In this paper, we have performed a numerical calculation of the scattered electromagnetic field around the building to evaluate electromagnetic interference caused by the building in the TV frequency band. The relations between the exposed concrete area of a building wall and the magnitude of the reflected wave have been examined in the case that the electroagnetic wave absorbers partially cover the building wall. From the obtained scattered electromagnetic field, we have calculated the DU radio and the required reflection loss of the electromagnetic wave absorbers which attached on the building wall to protect TV ghost.

  • In this paper, the compensation of ultrasonic scattering on interface crack depending on thickness variations of A1/Epoxy bonded dissimilar components was applied to improve measuring accuracy by using ultrasonic attenuation coefficient. The optimum conditions of theoretical value and experimental measuring accuracy by the ultrasonic method in A1/Epoxy bonded dissimilar components have been investigated. From the experimental results, the measurement method of interfacial crack lengths by using ultrasonic attenuation coefficient was proposed and discussed. After the ultrasonic scattering compensation depending on thickness variations of bonded dissimilar components was carried out, the measuring accuracy of interfacial crack length was improved by 5%.

  • Although there are many possible mechanisms for the intrinsic seismic attenuation in composite materials that include fluids, relative motion between solids and fluids during seismic wave propagation is one of the most important attenuation mechanisms. In our previous study, we conducted ultrasonic wave transmission measurements on an ice-brine coexisting system to examine the influence on ultrasonic waves of the unfrozen brine in the pore microstructure of ice. In order to elucidate the physical mechanism responsible for ultrasonic wave attenuation in the frequency range of 350.600 kHz, measured at different temperatures in partially frozen brines, we employed a poroelastic model based on the Biot theory to describe the propagation of ultrasonic waves through partially frozen brines. By assuming that the solid phase is ice and the liquid phase is the unfrozen brine, fluid properties measured by a pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance technique were used to calculate porosities at different temperatures. The computed intrinsic attenuation at 500 kHz cannot completely predict the measured attenuation results from the experimental study in an ice-brine coexisting system, which suggests that other attenuation mechanisms such as the squirt-flow mechanism and wave scattering effect should be taken into account.

  • Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) experiment of pyridine (CsHsN) has been performed at silverpyridine interface by use of long range surface plasmon (LRSP) which is generated in the Sarid-type attenuated total reflection (A TR) structure consisting of prism. dielectric. metal and dielectric media. Generation of LRSP has ben confirmed by observing the propagation of the LRSP. Raman signal of pyridine adsorbed on a silver surface in the above layered structure has been observed and compared with the bulk Raman signal and SERS signal from the chemically adsorbed pyridine. SERS experiment by use of LRSP has not yet reported to the best of our knowledge.wledge.

  • Purpose : More recently, combined PET/MR scanners have been developed in which the MR data can be used for both anatometabolic image formation and attenuation correction of the PET data. For quantitative PET information, correction of tissue photon attenuation is mandatory. The attenuation map is obtained from the CT scan in the PET/CT. In the case of PET/MR, the attenuation map can be calculated from the MR image. The purpose of this study was to assess the quantitative differences between MR-based and CT-based attenuation corrected PET images. Materials and Methods : Using the uniform cylinder phantom of distilled water which has 199.8 MBq of $^{18}F$-FDG put into the phantom, we studied the effect of MR-based and CT-based attenuation corrected PET images, of the PET-CT using time of flight (TOF) and non-TOF iterative reconstruction. The images were acquired from 60 minutes at 15-minute intervals. Region of interests were drawn over 70% from the center of the image, and the Scanners' analysis software tools calculated both maximum and mean SUV. These data were analyzed by one way-anova test and Bland-Altman analysis. MR images are segmented into three classes(not including bone), and each class is assigned to each region based on the expected average attenuation of each region. For clinical diagnostic purpose, PET/MR and PET/CT images were acquired in 23 patients (Ingenuity TF PET/MR, Gemini TF64). PET/CT scans were performed approximately 33.8 minutes after the beginnig of the PET/MR scans. Region of interests were drawn over 9 regions of interest(lung, liver, spleen, bone), and the Scanners' analysis software tools calculated both maximum and mean SUV. The SUVs from 9 regions of interest in MR-based PET images and in CT-based PET images were compared. These data were analyzed by paired t test and Bland-Altman analysis. Results : In phantom study, MR-based attenuation corrected PET images generally showed slightly lower -0.36~-0.15 SUVs than CT-based attenuation corrected PET images (p<0.05). In clinical study, MR-based attenuation corrected PET images generally showed slightly lower SUVs than CT-based attenuation corrected PET images (excepting left middle lung and transverse Lumbar) (p<0.05). And percent differences were -8.01.79% lower for the PET/MR images than for the PET/CT images. (excepting lung) Based on the Bland-Altman method, the agreement between the two methods was considered good. Conclusion : PET/MR confirms generally lower SUVs than PET/CT. But, there were no difference in the clinical interpretations made by the quantitative comparisons with both type of attenuation map.

  • Recently, it has been widely recognized that water-front and coastal vegetations may have great value in supporting fisheries, protecting from wave attack, stabilizing the sea bed and maintaining good scenery. Hydrodynamic factors playa major role in the functions of water quality and ecosystems. However, the studies on numerical and analytical process of wave propagation are few and far behind compared to those on the hydrodynamic roles of water-front vegetations. In this study, in order to express wave attenuation into water-front vegetation, a numerical model based on the unsteady mild slope equation is developed. This result is compared with an analytical model for describing the wave attenuation by assumed simple long wave condition. Based on both the analytical and numerical results, the physical properties of the wave attenuation are examined under various wave, geometric and vegetation conditions. Through comparisons between the analytical and numerical results, the effects of the vegetation properties, wave properties and model parameters such as the momentum exchange coefficient have been clarified.

  • In this research, a novel optical measuring methodology for the measurement of oil thickness in seawater is suggested by evaluating the light absorption which is occurred in the process of penetrating through oil layer on seawater. Laser having monochromatic wave is used as a light source and photodiode which can convert the intensity of the light into an electrical signal is applied to measure the intensity of the penetrating light through the oil-water mixtures. In the experiment, bunker C and lubricating oil are used, and three different lasers having different wavelengths are applied and compared for the selection of an optimal light source. As a result, it is observed that in the case of blue laser, the intensity of the light on the optical sensor decreases with an increase in the oil thickness. Through this relation, both the presence of oil and the thickness of oil can be determined.

  • We analyzed spectral attenuation of coda waves and estimated coda Q values in the crust of the Korean peninsula. 574 NS-component seismograms registered by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and Korea Institute of Geology, Mining and Materials (KIGAM) seismic networks with epicentral distances less than 100 km and sampling rate greater than 80 Hz were selected for this study. We estimated coda Q values using the single isotropic scattering model at center frequencies of 1.5, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, and 18 Hz with 20 s time window starting from double of the S-wave arrival times. Estimated coda Q value at 1 Hz ($Q_0$) and n value range 50 to 250 and 0.5 to 1.0, respectively, and they are well correlated with the regional geology in the Korean peninsula. The $Q_0$ values in western Korea agree well with those of eastern China.
