  • This study was conducted to investigate the structural relationship between depression, self-esteem, and social withdrawal that affect academic helplessness in adolescents. The study sample was 2,265 first-year students of high school in the fourth year (2021) data from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018. In this study, data were analyzed by a structural equation model based on the partial least squares method using SmartPLS 3.0. Results indicated that depression and social withdrawal had a significant positive effect on adolescents' academic helplessness, and self-esteem had a significant negative effect. In addition, social withdrawal had a significant positive mediating effect on the relationship between depression and academic helplessness. Therefore, it is required strategies that consider the relationship between depression, self-esteem, and social withdrawal to approach adolescents' academic helplessness.

  • This study examined the relationship between physical education and externalizing(aggression) and internalizing(depression, social withdrawal) problem behaviors among adolescents. The moderating role of gender and time in the association between physical education and problem behavior was also identified. This study used data from the second, third, and fourth waves of the middle school student cohort (N=2,133, N=2,151, N=1,979) of the Korean Children-Youth Panel Survey(KCYPS). Main analyses involved multilevel growth model with interaction terms. The dependent variables were aggression, depression, and social withdrawal. The independent variables were gender and physical education (exercise hours) at school. The control variables were abuse, school-adjustment, annual household income and parents' highest level of education. The major longitudinal findings of this study are as follows: First, there was significant change according to the passage of time only in aggression among externalizing and internalizing problems. Second, gender differences exist in aggression and depression. Third, exercise hours of physical education had a negative relationship with internalizing problems. Fourth, there were no gender differences over time in both externalizing and internalizing problems. Fifth, the interaction between exercise hours of physical education and time was statistically significant for social withdrawal. Sixth, the interaction between exercise hours of physical education and gender was statistically significant for depression. The results of this study may become an academic basis for suggesting policy directions that promote increased exercise hours in physical education classes at school.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify various factors related to depression in adolescents. In this study, a multiple regression analysis was conducted to investigate the factors affecting depression in 1,881 1st grade students in middle school, using the 2016 Panel Investigation for Children and Adolescents of Korea. The attention problems, aggression, physical symptoms, and social withdrawal perceived by adolescents had significant effects on the depression. Out of them, the physical symptoms had the greatest effects on the depression. When the attention problems, aggression, physical symptoms, and social withdrawal of adolescents were higher, the symptoms of depression were increased, which explained 54.1% of adolescents' depression. Such results of this study could be helpful for the educational support and practical intervention for the enhancement of mental health of adolescents.

  • This study is objected to identify the influencing factors of adolescents' smartphone dependency and to determine the degree of influence on smartphone dependency through direct and indirect channels acting between factors. The data of the 2th Korean Child-Youth Panel Survey(KCYPS 2018) was analyzed using the SPSS 26.0 and 26.0 AMOS program. Six paths proved to statistically significant. Self-esteem and depression were the influencing factors of adolescents' smartphone dependency. Social withdrawal and the school environment influenced smartphone dependency through self-esteem and depression as mediators. Self-esteem and depression acted as mediating factors. Adolescents' smartphone dependency was influenced not only by personal factors but also by external factors such as the school environment. The results of this study will be presented as evidence for developing programs that can prevent adolescents from smartphone dependency.

  • This study analyzed the effects of school violence, parental violence, and academic stress on the middle school students suicidal ideation through depression and withdrawn. For this study, we used data from the 13th wave the Korea Welfare Panel Study(KOWEPS). The analysis was conducted on 391 middle school students. Structural equation modeling by using AMOS was used for this study. As results of the study, the biggest effect on the suicidal ideation was the total effect of school violence, and the direct effect was also significant. In other words, school violence is a partial mediating effect through depression and withdrawn on suicidal ideation. Parental violence was more indirect effect than direct effect through depression on suicidal ideation. In other words, parental violence is a complete mediating effect through depression on suicidal ideation. Academic stress was more indirect effect than direct effect through depression and withdrawn on suicidal ideation. In other words, academic stress is a complete mediating effect through depression on suicidal ideation. Withdrawn was not direct affect, but had an indirect effect through depression on suicidal ideation. Therefore, in order to prevent suicide of middle school students, there is a need for prevention of school violence, parental violence and academic stress, which are causes of depression.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the associations among attention deficit/hyperactivity, social withdrawal, peer relationships, and depression in early adolescence. Gender differences in the associations were also examined. This study investigated these relationships and the gender differences using structural equation modeling multi-group analysis. The third wave data from Korea Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS) of fourth graders were analyzed. The results indicated that attention deficit/hyperactivity had significant effects on depression directly and indirectly through social withdrawal and peer relationships. These results suggest that new programs should be developed to prevent or alleviate depression associated with attention deficit/hyperactivity among adolescents. Specifically, social withdrawal and peer relationships need to be emphasized in planning prevention or intervention programs to promote mental health of adolescents with attention deficit/hyperactivity.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the longitudinal relationship between Korean youth's social withdrawal, depression and community sense mediated by achievement values. For this purpose, we analyzed three years of the longitudinal panel data (2011-2013) of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS). Data were collected from 2,351 first year middle school students using the latent growth model using SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 22.0. The main analysis results were as follows. First, social withdrawal and depression decreased and community sense increased as time passed. These results supported the linear change model. Second, the initial status of social withdrawal and depression had effects on the initial status and change rates of community sense. Achievement values, the partial mediator, had a positive influence on initial community sense but had a negative influence on change rates of community sense. We discussed how to improve Korean youth's community sense based on these results.
