The purpose of present study was to observe the path and influencing effects between socioeconomic class (SEC), health practices and self-rated health(SRH) by the age bracket. The subjects were 4,987 adults over 25 years old who participated in the 2008 Korean National Examination Health and Nutrition Survey and could be classified into SEC in terms of the three characteristics: education, income and occupation. Path analysis was conducted with the effects of health behaviors execution on the differences in SRH, and the complex samples analysis executed by chi-square test, t-test, ANOVA. As the result, lower SRH level paralleled with the lower SEC, and more health behaviors had differed by SEC in the younger and middle aged group. The lower SEC, the lower SRH: non-smoking and weight control for younger women and exercise for aged men had indirect effects as parameters. In conclusion, when planning a health promotion program, to select the correct target populations with consideration of the age bracket, gender and SEC and to establish tailored contents fit for each of the population would be important.
Social class has become a major focus of research in the field of Western psychology due to its critical impact on human life. The Korean scholarship in psychology, however, has paid very little attention to the issue of social class despite the deepening of social stratification in the country; and the concepts and measurement they used were typically borrowed from sociology. In this study, I discussed what social class means and how it should be measured in order to emphasize the importance of the concept and its related issues. To this end, I examined a variety of theoretical backgrounds on the measurement of social class and the concept of socioeconomic status (SES)-a term commonly used as a synonym for social class. This study divided the method of measuring social class into objective social class and subjective social class, and outlined the characteristics of each approach and their main indicators. Finally, I assessed the recent trend in the Korean psychology on social class measurement. Among the 23 studies I have found, 65.2% used the objective social class index; and education was the objective indicator they most frequently employed, followed by income and occupation. Social stratification identity was used in all seven studies that applied subjective social class. And seven different words to describe social class was found. Based on these results, I concluded that there should be a call for more direct research on social class variables. In addition, I suggest that 'social class', instead of socioeconomic status, should be used as a preferred term in the future studies and propose a few notes on how to use the objective indicators and subjective social class measurement.

This study examined the factors influencing the health status according to class and socioeconomic class recognition by the employment type. To take advantage of the 18 original sources of the Korea Labor panel materials carried out in the South Korea Labor Institute, 5,158 adults over 20 years old were included in the final analysis. The research results revealed that the incomes of regular workers and non-regular workers between the hierarchy and socioeconomic hierarchy recognition showed a statistically significant difference between the cage; it was consistent between the hierarchy in only the "heavy" category. Regular workers of society, and regardless of non-regular workers, were analyzed to be relatively low compared to the actual income. Regression analysis showed that regular jobs had higher socioeconomic hierarchy recognition. Non-regular workers had a lower income bracket and lower socioeconomic hierarchy recognition. In particular, in the case of non-regular workers, the pension was not subscribed and they had a poorer state of health. Therefore, the pension insurance payment for non-regular workers needs to compensate for the lost income during non-employment periods. In addition, the government should improve public relations through education, management fields, and cooperation with labor.

It is widely believed that increasing socio-economic polarization inspired by globalization and economic restructuring worsens residential segregation by class in Korean cities. However, the existing literature falls short in showing the recent changes of the residential segregation, particularly after the 1997 financial crisis, with reliable and systematic segregation measures. Noting that there are the two major dimension in residential segregation - evenness-concentration and exposure-clustering - this study introduced not only global measure (dissimilarity index and isolation/interaction index) but also local measures (location quotient and Local Moran's I) for each dimension. These measures are applied to the case study of Seoul in the 2000s. The class is defined by education attainment and the data is obtain through the MicroData System Service System(MDSS). The result shows that the residential segregation by education attainment persists through 2000s and even get worse in some dimension. More significantly, it turns out that high-class and low-class residence are nearly mirror-images of each other, indicating high segregation.
This study was conducted to examine the latent classes in social exclusion and to analyse empirically the effects on the economic instability of old age by this type. And it also sought to look at whether the influence of old age anxiety varies with the subjective class consciousness of the elderly. Using the 14th data from the Korea General Social Survey (KGSS) in 2016, 1,041 adult males and females aged 18 years old were analyzed at the time of the survey. T-test, potential layer analysis (LCA), and multinomantic analysis of potential groups were conducted using the STATA14 and MPLUS 7 statistical programs. Finally, multi-regression analysis was performed to identify the moderate effect and effects among variables. According to the research, the types of social exclusion were three groups, followed by social exclusion group (49.3%), Multi-dimensional exclusion group (30.9%), and active social participation group (19.7%). The social exclusion group has the lowest possibility of economic, employment, and health exclusion, but the exclusion of formal and informal social activities seem to prominent, and the multi-dimensional exclusion group is more than 50% likely to experience exclusion in all areas. Active social participation are characterized by very active participation in informal social activities. By conducting multinominal logistic regression, it was observed that the social exclusion group included more young people than other groups, and that the multi-dimensional exclusion group included many elderly women without spouses. Finally, multiple regression analysis showed that social exclusion type interacts with subjective class consciousness and affects economic anxiety of old age.
This study explores how the digital divide caused by personal SES(Socio-Economic Status) eventually affect personal life satisfaction. The study also investigates the differences between living in urban and rural areas, as well as the differences among generations, with respect to the digital divide and personal life satisfaction. Based on the Korean Media Panel data produced by KISDI, this study used 9,647 national samples to obtain variables such as digital divide, and life satisfaction. Results show that personal SES is a key factor that significantly influences digital divide and life satisfaction in various degrees. Also, the study finds that the degree of the digital divide have an effect on people's life satisfaction. The findings imply that people living in urban areas are more highly used to digital media than those in rural areas regardless of their SES. The study has an implication, in terms of digital equity among generations as well as urban and rural residents.
This report was the result of Food and Nutrition Intake Survey of 210 adults of 43 rural households in 7 villages located on Kyung Nam, Korea. It was intended to provide baseline information on the nutrintional status and inequality, the change of food consumption pattern of different rural socioeconomic classes. The survey results were as follows; 1. All the nutrient intakes(except Ca) were above RDA in landlord classes, but those were extremely poor in tenancy and rural laborer classes. Ca was the most deficient nutrient in all classes. 'Vitamin A' was deficient in most of the classes. 2. In per capita food consumption expenditure, the highest was in landlord class, next capitalist farmer and middle class farmer, the lowest were rural laborer and tenancy. There were highest consumption of vegetables and fish in landlord class, and milks and oils in capitalist farmer. The consumption of rice fruits, meats, eggs, and seasoning were relatively proportionated to the income. 3. In the change of food consumption, the most increased items were beverages and meats in capitalist farmer, fish and fruits in landlord, rice in the other classes. 4. In the correlation with food consumption, education level showed the highest correlation with meats, oils, and in contrast, land sire showed the highest correlation with cereals. Engel's coefficient was positively correlated to cereals, but negatively correlated to fish and meats.

This paper offers a brief overview of the historical implications of residential segregation in Busan, Korea. It first reviews the history of residence from the early 1900s to the present and the transition of residential boundary of the City of Busan. It then considers the characteristics of residential segregation and the important factors in it. The social class of pre-industrial society led the inequality of residential areas around the Eubchee. The existed Korean residential areas were separated by newly built-up residential areas in the Japanese colonial era. After the liberation from Japanese Rule and Korean War, rapid population growth made considerable slums across the City of Busan. These slums were an important factor to segregate residential areas from prosperous areas ever afterward. The socio-economic status has related to residential segregation through the formation of differential housing classes since 1990s. The historial analysis of these periods will offer an insight into how the dominant factors lead residential segregation in a specific period by promoting a more socio-economically integrated society.
In Korea, 'spoon class discourse' has attracted public attention in the press and among young people, which reflects that mass awareness that the class status structure is clearly rooted in the society becomes widespread. Although income distribution has been improved since late 2000s, it is interesting that Korean people's subjective perception concerning class mobility and social justice has been worsemed. By using the survey data on people's perception of opportunity inequality, this study finds that Korean people have by and large negative subjective awareness regarding socio-economic opportunity inequality, magnitude of opportunity inequality, and achievement by efforts, and that the degree of the negative perception is greater in accordance with the people's subjective identification. The regression analysis reveals that the social status of respondents and their parents(-), experience of discrimination(+), age(-), and high education of college and above (+) have consistent effect over socio-economic opportunity inequality, magnitude of opportunity inequality, and achievement by efforts with statistical significance. More concretely, as people have lower subjective status identification at the time of parent generation and their own generation, as they have the experience of discriminatory misconduct, and as they are young and highly educated, they have negative or pessimistic perception regarding opportuinity inequality. In addition, it is revealed that the unemployed and non-regular workers have significantly negative perception on socio-economic opportunity inequality, magnitude of opportunity inequality, while negative perception on the magnitude of opportunity inequality and achievement by efforts is noticeable among high and middle income households.
