Study on the Detection of Artificial Dyes in the Commercial Drops by Use of Thin-Layer Chromatography (Thin-Layer Chromatography에 의한 시판 알사탕류의 착색료에 관한 고찰)

  • A study was carried out to detect of illegal artificial dyes, and to confirm the used rate of illegal dyes in the production process of commercial drops (candy), from Dec. 10, 1972 to Feb. 10, 1973. In this study, it was used thin layer chromatography, the samples were divided into two groups, group A of inscribed trade name and group B of not inscribed trade name. To contrast with group A and group B, 100 samples were randomly collected in the market places, 50 samples from group A and 50 samples from group B. The following conclusions were obtained: 1) used rate of illegal dyes were 2% of group A and 9% of group B. 2) used rate of illegal dyes were 2% of red, 2% of yellow, 1% of violet and 6% of green, not in blue. 3) used rate of illegal dyes 3% of Rhodamine B, 3% of Auramine and 6% of Light green S.F. Yellowish. 4) Out of 20 cases those used mixed dyes, only one case was confirmed as two illegal dyes, and 4 cases were used one illegal dye.

A Comparison of Dietary Behaviors According to Gender and Obesity Status of Middle School Students in Jeonju (전주지역 중학생의 성별 및 비만판정에 따른 식행동 비교 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the dietary habits, behaviors, and food consumption frequency according to gender and obesity level among middle school students in the Jeonju area. Subjects for the questionnaire were 450 middle school students (male 255, female 195) and were classified as either obese students (n=150 or non-obese students (n=299) by the obesity assessment method. The results were analyzed with SAS program (Version 9.1), and were as follows. 1. Dietary behaviors were significantly different in the rate of 'Skipping breakfast (p<0.05)', 'Duration of meal time (min) (p<0.05)' and 'Unbalanced diet (p<0.01)' between males and females. Dietary habits and behaviors also differed significantly for the rate of ‘Taste preferences (p<0.05)’, and 'Unbalanced diet (p<0.01)' between obese students and non-obese students. 2. Food consumption frequency per week was as follows. First, males were significantly higher than females in 'Instant noodle (p<0.05)', 'Milk (p<0.01)', and 'Soda pop (p<0.01)'; on the other hand females were significantly higher than males in 'Chocolate, Candy (p<0.01)'. Second, non-obese students were significantly higher than obese students in 'Instant noodle (p<0.05)', 'Hamburger, Pizza (p<0.05)', and 'Chocolate, Candy (p<001)'. Especially, non-obese male students were higher in 'Instant noodle (p<0.05)' and 'Hamburger, Pizza (p<0.05)'; non-obese female students were higher in 'Chocolate, Candy (p<0.01)'. In conclusion, an action program is needed to encourage healthful dietary behaviors, increased physical activity, and forming good lifelong habits.

Quality Characteristics of Natural Sugars Prepared from Domestic Sugar Beet and Commercial Sugars (국내산 사탕무로 제조한 천연당과 시판 제품과 비교 분석)

  • This work aimed to investigate the physiochemical properties of commercial sugars (white sugar, dark brown sugar, organic sugar, and muscovado) and sugar beet. Percentages of crude protein, crude fat and crude fiber in sugar beet were 4.06, 6.36 and 0.02%, respectively, and the degrees of sugar of white sugar and sugar beet were $93^{\circ}$ Brix and $78^{\circ}$ Brix, respectively. L(lightness) value scores of white sugar were higher while the turbidity of sugar beet was higher. White sugar, dark brown sugar, and organic sugar were composed of only sucrose, whereas muscovad and sugar beet were composed of fructose, glucose, and sucrose. The highest organic acid content was observed in sugar beet. The contents of amino acids in sugar beet were in the following order: proline ($161.23\;{\mu}g$/100 g) > aspartic acid ($161.23\;{\mu}g$/100 g) > leucine ($36.93\;{\mu}g$/100 g) > alanine ($17.40\;{\mu}g$/100 g). There were 16 free amino acids in sugar beet. The highest mineral contest was observed in sugar beet in the order of K > Ca > Na > Mg. This result indicates that sugar beet can be prepared by considering the characteristics of natural sugar materials.

Pretreatment of Sugarcane Molasses and Citric Acid Production by Candida zeylanoides (사탕수수당밀의 전처리법과 Candida zeylanoides에 의한 시트르산의 생산)

  • Citric acid is produced via submerged fermentation using yeasts. Among eight different strains of yeast, Candida zeylanoides was chosen as the strain for producing citric acid and optimized for various C/N ratios and effects of phosphate or Fe2+ ions in a clean carbon source medium (glucose: fructose, 1:1). The yield of citric acid was maximized at a C/N ratio of 40/1, a phosphate addition of 1.0 g/l, and an Fe2+ ion concentration of less than 50 mg/l, yielding up to 91 g/L in the broth with 18.5 g/l of isocitric acid in a six-day fermentation period using a pre-treated molasses medium. The yield of batch culture was 0.51 (Yp/s, g/g) in a 5 L-Jar fermenter.

Influence of roasting conditions on the flavor quality of sesame seed oil (참깨 볶음조건이 참기름의 향미에 미치는 영향)

  • Sesame seeds were roasted for 30, 60, 90, and 120 min at different temperatures (100, 200, and $300^{\circ}C$) and extracted to investigate an adequate condition for producing the high quality sesame oil. Sesame seeds roasted at $200^{\circ}C$ for 90 min gave the high yield of oil. The oil contained the low content of brownish-black precipitates and exhibited an excellent organoleptic quality when judged by descriptive sensory analysis. Thirty one volatile flavor compounds, which are the largest number of volatiles among the oil samples prepared, were identified from the oil sample. The oil contained relatively high concentrations of furfurals (sweet candy-like flavor) and pyrazines (roasted-like flavor), that are considered as good contributors to sesame seed oil flavor, and low concentations of aldehydes $(C5{\sim}C10)$ and ketones, which are considerd as bad contributors (oxidized fat-like and painty-like flavors). These results suggest that the roasting condition of $200^{\circ}C$ for 90 min was the best for the oil production in terms of the overall aroma and taste quality under the test conditions (Received July 13, 1993; accepted November 4, 1993).

  • This study attempts to examine Egyptian agricultural development with regard to the social and political changes in the Egypt, and tries to explore the patterns of major crops and those spatial distribution nowadays. Also, land reclamation processes and farming activities are explained. Agricultural development in Egypt has been considerably affected by historical international trade, and those crops such as cotton and sugar cane have been especially protected and controlled as strategic crops by the Egyptian governments. The issues of land ownership have been varied with political environments by periods, but the controls to the strategic crops have been consistently maintained to a degree though some variations. since the 1990s, national liberalization programs also caused to change the agricultural policies which have affected the adjustments of crop production and land use. Spatial distribution of major crops and farming activities are examined in relation to natural environments by Delta, Middle and Upper Egypt, desert areas. The projects of land reclamation after 1952 are evaluated with the effects of government intervention, and the actors in use of the reclaimed lands are investigated.

  • Strigol, a natural product isolated from root exudates of cotton, was found to be an extremely potent seed germination stimulant for the parasitic plant, witchweed. Witchweed seeds can remain dormant in the soil for several years until favorable conditions prevail including exposure to some type of chemical germination stimulant. Several strigol analogues, 3-methyl-4-(2-oxo-3,3a,6,6a-tetrahydro-2H-cyclopenta[b]furan-3-ylidenemethoxy)-but-2-en-4-olide(21), 4-(2-oxo-3,3a,6,6a-tetrahydro-2H-cyclopenta[b]furan-3-ylidenemethoxy)but-2-en-4-oilde(22), 3-methyl-4-(2-oxotetrahydrofuran-3-ylidenemethoxy)-but-2-en-4-olide(23), and 4-(2-oxotetrahydrofuran-3-ylidenemethoxy)-but-2-en-4-olide(24), were synthesized.

  • This study examined the standard how to deal with infringement of copyright legally, by looking at several examples of the infringement of copyright in local video works. When we look at precedents relating to copyrighted motion pictures, there are many times when two works seem quite similar but don't get conformed to the infringement of copyright by deliberating the similarities feebly. Although the Idea seems same, the creative expression is admitted and the substantial similarity is denied. For example, in the case of the soap opera, 'Kareiski', the court presented a standard of judgment by organizing the facts, based on the subjective element, dependence on proof and the objective element, the substantial similarity In the case of 'Fox and the Cotton Candy', the dependence on proof and the substantial similarity were examined as usual but when examining the substantial similarity, it was examined in more specific details. This case is a good reference for solving such a case in the future.

Development of Soil Dilution Planting Method for Ecological Studies of Pythium Populations (Pythium Population 의 생태적 특성 고찰을 위한 Soil Dilution Planting Method의 개발)

  • The number of colonies often decreased more than would be expected in a dilution from 1:50 to 1:100; however, a lack of agreement between the dilution series and the number of colonies obtained also occurred at higher dilutions. In the experiments with each soil subsample, there was sometimes poor agreement between the number of colonies obtained at the same dilution from the A and B subsamples. However, repeated 1:50 dilutions of soil suspensions of subsamples A and B yielded similar numbers of colonies. In the second experiment series conducted with a second composite soil sample, the number of colonies obtained from each soil subsample decreased following air drying. The results suggest that it was difficult to obtain a uniform distribution of Pythium propagules in the two sugarcane field soils tested. The high number of propagules detected at the 1:50 dilution could have been due to hyphal fragments or connected hyphal swellings that separated during the final mixing or during plating.
