Analysis of the Image of Librarians in Motion Pictures (영화에 나타난 사서의 이미지 분석)

  • The purpose of this research is to contribute to improvement strategy by defining public image for librarians in motion pictures. Therefore, this research analyzed image of librarians in the motion pictures which librarian appeared as a character and produced in Korea and America from the year 1992 to 2006 through quantitative content analysis method.

  • The international standard for the school library suggests that school librarians qualified for librarian and teacher should run the school library. And library assistants should support the teacher librarian to carry out a role as a teacher. Despite the difference of requirements, librarians without teachers' license are under the human resources for school library administration. Furthermore, the job description between the school librarian and librarian is not well-defined in Korea. The different requirements in the library standards and the school library related laws have led to weaken professionalism and social status of librarianship. The condition that teacher librarians are not in the school library have brought the pressure to overcome imperfect functions of the school library and unfairness of educational services. In order to solve these problems, it is necessary to strengthen teacher librarians' qualification system to improve their identity as educational subject specialist librarians. We ought to also build proper foundations of social recognition about librarianship through classifying the types of human resources in the school library into the teacher librarian, library paraprofessional and volunteers. Especially we should hold the job analysis based on administrator, teacher, service, leader, collaboration, and partner.

A Study on the Acquisition of Subject Specialized Manpower and Institutionalization (주제전문인력 확보 및 제도화 방안에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, an investigation has been made on the status of the issuance of librarian qualification, the status of operating Subject specialized librarians at home and abroad, the status of professional manpower of the similar cultural facilities, and their recruitment method, based on which an attempt has been made to propose a way to nurture the Subject specialized librarians. First, I propose a method for training Subject specialized librarians through a regular curriculum and a retraining process, while suggest the ways to nurture the Subject specialized librarians from undergraduate and also nurture the existing librarians to become the Subject specialized librarians. Second, the basic qualification of the Subject specialized librarians must have a career of more than 3 years in a specific subject area with a master's degree or higher, and in order to have a subject area background, it is proposed that a bachelor's degree or a master's degree must absolutely be acquired in the corresponding subject area. Third, in order to improve the treatment of such Subject specialized librarians, the Subject specialized librarians in the administrative service group could be organized into a research librarian (or library and information science) series and types as a subordinate literary series under the researcher position. That is, it is proposed to differentiate the librarians and the Subject specialized librarians by reorganizing series and types of the Subject specialized librarians while maintaining the current librarian series.

  • This study is to examine the basic structure of the professional development of school librarians and to analyze the national evaluation standards, and the states' evaluation tools and self-assessment tool currently used in the United States. The result is as follows: the structure of the school librarians' professional development processes, such as curriculum, certificate, and evaluation, have been affected by the national school library standards published by AASL. NBPTS's Library Media Standards and AASL's Learning4Life evaluation system are proposed as the representative national standards. Many states have developed their standards and tools to evaluate school librarians' performance, these standards are related to the national standards. AASL published A 21st-Century Approach to School Librarian Evaluation for school librarians' self-assessment in 2012, this workbook shows a specific way of developing their expertise.

  • To meet the higher needs for a new role of libraries in information society, professionalization of librarians who are core human resource of libraries is essential. Under the present circumstance that one can acquire a librarian license if he/she completes the required whole courses only, librarian license system should be improved and innovated. The purposes of this study are to investigate the surveys on librarian license system and the statistics of production and employment of librarians and to suggest a new librarian license examination as a remedy of the present system and a continuing professional education and an examination for license renewal. Based upon the investigation of a case study of the Philippines librarian licensure system, this study suggests some countermeasure which should be considered and discussed for the improvement and innovation of the present librarian licensure system.

Developmental of Curriculum for Training Professional Librarians Specializing in the Field of Mental Health (주제전문사서로서의 정신보건사서 양성 교육과정 개발)

  • There is a strong need to develop a training program for specialized personnel called mental health librarian. The study examines the necessity of ongoing education as series of steps to be considered in actual curriculum development, by looking at the features of bibliotherapy through a literature review and through an analysis to the requirements of a qualified mental health librarian and its training system. The result shows that, in order to train librarian in mental health, it is necessary to establish courses corresponding to the bibliotherapy field within the subject of library and information sciences and to strengthen the specialization in the its curriculum. It is desirable to establish the mental health librarian educational programs in library and information science graduate programs in Korea. The results of this study, as fundamental data for future research, will promote the role of the specialized mental health librarian and guidelines for developing and expanding the qualities and training of specialized librarian to resolve the immediate problem of the Korean library scene and academia.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the field librarians' opinions of the library specialization and specialized librarian and understand the librarians' working conditions and environment. Questionnaire were developed based on the previous studies and surveys were conducted with the librarians of public libraries, university libraries, and professional librarians across the nation. A total of 392 librarians have responded to the survey. As for the main result, the users' satisfaction with the specialization service was perceived to be high, and the most difficult matter in performing the specialization service is the lack of knowledge on the subject matter, and the library environment for the specialization service is not enough. The specialization service should be led by the theme specialized librarians, and the qualification criteria for the theme specialized librarians are required, and the qualification systems should be managed by the state.

  • This study aims to suggest the scheme of upbringing Subject Specialists based on the cooperative effort of the main bodies related to Libraries for bringing up and revitalizing plans. Only when all subjects in every sector cooperate hard, upbringing Subject Specialists can come true. To raise subject librarians, First, library-related organizations, groups, and associations have to play an important role in policies and financial support about Subject Specialists. Second, The academic world needs to plan and operate the various education programs for Subject Specialists. Finally, the libraries on the field Have to provide their members with motivation for being Subject Specialists, opportunities for education, and prepare the personage system including employment and compensation for Subject Specialists.

A Study on the Current Status and Problems of Medical Librarian Qualification System and Medical Librarians' Self- Efficacy and Self-Esteem (국내 의학사서자격제의 현황과 문제점 및 의학사서의 자기효능감과 자아존중감에 관한 연구)

  • This study investigated the current status and problems of medical librarian qualification system and measured medical librarians' self-efficacy and self-esteem. 49.4% of the respondents acquired medical librarian qualification and 82.9% of them are willing to re-acquire the qualification. To obtain publishing activity point was the most difficult of all evaluation items. Average self-efficacy score was 3.42, and self-esteem score was 3.89, and women's self-efficacy and self-esteem scores are higher than those of men. Medical librarian qualification system has been managed in a stable manner, yet the system has to be consolidated and developed into a national qualification system so that it can contribute to the improvements in proficiency of medical librarians.

A Study on the Development of an Education and Training System for Civil Servant Librarians (사서직공무원 교육훈련 시스템 발전 방안 연구)

  • This study aims to devise reasonable future-oriented librarian training program development plan for satisfying on-site demands of librarians nationwide by examining and finding out the operation of managing the nation's only one librarian training program of National Library of Korea. Based on a survey targeting 2,044 people participating in training program, meeting of interested persons, doing self-operation rating, it tries to find problems of training programs, examine ways to improve them and suggests solutions such as reforming of exclusively designed organization for educating, training of lectures, increasing training budget, promoting cyber training and balancing the testing systems. In addition, as part of improving librarian training programs, it considers Sejong National Library(currently being constructed) to be responsible for sharing its work and management.
