The aim of this study is to develop eco-friendly, fundamental technology for vegetative restoration of barren lands using green rehabilitation material, for the stabilization of abandoned mine debris slopes and depository slopes composed of rock fragments. It is expected that such methods would help to improve the negative view of artificial slopes that remain following mining activity, while also contributing to slope stabilization and prevention of the loss of rock fragments and the dispersion of tailings. We tested the tensile strength and tear strength of various materials, including commonly used natural coir material, natural fibers, and synthetic textile materials with enhanced durability. In conclusion, there is the possibility that natural coir can be used as an eco-friendly material in vegetation restoration, while its durability in natural conditions can be improved by controlling the degree of knot convolution and by antibacterial treatment against biodegradation.
This study aims to clarify the characteristics of the physical and mechanical properties of soil-slope failure of Okcheon metamorphic zone. Soil samples were collected from 35 collapsed and uncollapsed artificial slopes along national roads. A series of laboratory experiments was carried out to examine physical and mechanical properties of soils and rocks. The results show that failure slopes have weakness of failure at 0.75 of AMI or higher, 32% of liquid limit or higher, and 31% of saturated moisture content or higher. The plastic index of failure slopes is correlated to wet density and saturated density. It turned out that failure could easily happen according to a high plastic index even if the void ratio was low. The greater the contents of bigger-sized soil, i.e. contents of sands and gravels rather than of clays, is the greater the chance to fail at the slope.
We have developed a software to predict failure time of the rock slope based on analysis of the data from real time displacement measurements with respect to time. The software consists of four modules that play roles in analytical methods such as inverse velocity method, log time-log velocity method, log velocity-log acceleration method and nonlinear least square method to estimate failure time. VisualBasic.NET on the MS Visual Studio platform was utilized as a development tool to efficiently implement the modules and the graphical user interface of the software. Displacement data obtained from laboratory physical model studies of plane sliding were used to explore the applicability of the software, and to evaluate the possibility of predicting potential slope failure. It seems possible to estimate failure time using developed software for sliding plane having exponential type of deformability.
At present, continual road constructions to connect from city to city are needed due to the geographical feature of Korea that about $70\%$ of the territory is mountainous area. Thus, the generation of large cut-slope has been inevitably formed. As a means of reinforcement on the cut-slope, in case of destructive disasters such as a snowstorm, pile embedment method is widely adopted. The pile embedment method is to resist possible move of soil by embedding piles from the surface to the immovable ground and then delivering the load from the piles to the immovable ground. In this study this writer analyzes the limitation of empirically used pile construction depth and its spacing through the numerical analysis. As a result, he suggests the most effective pile construction depth and space.
LEM (Limit Equilibrium Method) based programs are commonly used for the designs of soil nailing as a slope reinforcement. However, there is a drawback that the interaction between ground and soil nailing is not properly reflected in those programs, which needs to be solved. For economical constructions and designs, research is also required on the support pattern of soil nailing. In this study, therefore, reinforcement effects of soil nailing were compared and analyzed by performing finite difference analyses which could properly consider the interaction between ground and soil nailing. As a result, when the angle from slope to nail is $90^{\circ}$, failure slip surface becomes the largest and thus the factor of safety becomes maximum.
This paper is to investigate the bearing capacity and the failure mechanism of slope subjected to strip surcharges adjassent to embankment slope of sandy soil. Parametric model tests under plain strain condition were performed by changing width of footing, relative density of slope materials, and position of footing from the crest of slopes. For model tests, Jumunjin standard sand was used as the slope material and its relative density was 45% and 70%, respectively. The angle of slope was formed with 1 : 1.5 and 1 2. Rigid model footings, made of aluminuu were used with their widths of 4, 7, 10 and 12cm. For the position of model footing, position ratios, distance of model footing from the crest of slope divided by footing width, were 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Failure mechanism was observed by using ink colored sands and markers inserted in model slopes. Ultimate bearing capacity obtained from tests was analyzed and compared with limit equilibrium method, limit analysis method and empirical equation. Characteristics of load-settlement curves and failure mechanism were also analyzed and compared with the existing theories. Thus, their effects on ultimate bearing capacity of model footing adjacent to slope were assessed.
Rainfall induced landslides are disasters causing sever damage on the human life and the infrastructures. In this paper, a simplified procedure to evaluate the slope stability problems induced by rainfall by modifying the Iverson's pressure head dispersion model. The proposed approach extends the applicability of the Iverson's model in to the cases of higher rainfall intensity than the permeability of the soil by incorporating the existence of overland flow. In addition, the Manning equation is applied to calculated the depth of overland flow. From the calculated depth of overland flow, shear stress acting on the surface is included for the driving component triggering the landslides. From the analysis of a case study, the long term rainfall alters the stability of slope.
The reinforced soil retaining wall structures of serious types with environmental are widely expanding more and more in Korea, which divided conventional type's reinforced soil retaining wall on segmental retaining wall. The causes of most crack occurred at block in reinforced soil retaining wall structure caused by the differential settlement of foundation. It is difference of settlement for significant factor that with overall slope stability. In this study, design assessment of foundation bearing capacity related to differential settlement of foundation ground was considered. And, also, through case study, the countermeasure methods and its application were suggested that the bearing capacity of foundation had to stabilize. The foundation ground in charge of bearing capacity should be affected by the resisting force of sliding, because the foundation parts of reinforced soil retaining wall were belongs to potential slope sliding area in overall stabilizing including retaining wall structures. Therefore, the analyzing or the designing of bearing capacity for foundation should be considered control capacity on the overall slope sliding.
The analysis of slope stability was performed from seven sites among total eleven sites of waste rock which are divided into two objects (mullock-pile and rock mass) according to the location of dumping-dropping point in L limestone Mine. The analysis of circular failure using Bishop's simplified method and the finite element method for mullock-pile slopes were adopted. For rock mass slopes, identification of failure modes on stereonet projection was determined, thereby limit equilibrium analysis was applied to obtain the safety factor of slopes and the finite element method was used to understand overall behavior of slope. Phi-c reduction method was used to calculate the safety factor of slopes through the finite element method. In mullock-pile slope of zone D and rock slopes of zone F and G, the assurance of slope stability was difficult, and the plans to assure the stability of slopes were proposed on the basis of the analysis of slopes at disposal sites of waste rock. Therefore, the method of piling with waste rock by dozer pushing after dumping for mullock-pile slope of zone D is required, and the method of piling after moving to the place which has no fault zone for rock slope of zone F and G is recommended.
Pseudo-static slope stability analysis method is widely used in engineering practice to calculate the seismic factor of safety of slope subjected to earthquake ground motions. Although the dynamic analysis method is well recognized to have the primary advantage of simulating the stress-strain response of soils, it is not often used in practice because of the difficult in estimating the factor of safety. In this study, a procedure which utilizes the dynamic analysis method to extract the transient dynamic factor of safety is devleoped. This method overcomes the major limitation of the pseudo-static method, which uses an empirically determined seismic coefficient to derive the factor of safety. The proposed method is applied to a slope model and the result is compared with that of the pseudo-static method. It is shown that minimum dynamic factor of safety calculated by the dynamic analysis is slightly larger than that determined from the pseudo-static method. It is also demonstrated that the dynamic factor of safety becomes minimum when the horizontal seismic coefficient and horizontal average acceleration are maximum.
