  • This study was conducted to find out the suitable gradient and length of the slope from the landslide of banking slope and cutting slope caused by rainfall. The survey was carried out on forest road built in 1986. And the period of survey was from June, 1989 to August, 1989 after dividing the forest road into A and B. The survey plots consisted of the 12 banking slopes and 6 cutting slopes. The results obtained from the study were summarized as follows; 1. The rate of landslide appeared 75% in A forest road, 50% in B forest road, and then the average 67% in A and B forest road. But the value of landslide showed considerably low. 2. Because of landslide chiefly occuring on banking slope of $36^{\circ}{\sim}38^{\circ}$ and on cutting slope of $42^{\circ}{\sim}43^{\circ}$, it is suitable to decide the banking slope and cutting slope below each $36^{\circ}$ and $40^{\circ}$. 3. Landslide was the same on banking slopes through the length of slope. The best suitable length of slope is below 4m in cutting slope.

  • A calcareous rock slope failed during excavation of the slope for construction of a tunnel entrance. The slope is located at the construction site for widening highway in Yeongwol, Korea. Field surveys, laboratory tests, and numerical analyses were performed to determine the reason for the slope failure. The numerical analysis revealed that the safety factor of the slope before construction of the entrance was less than 1, and that this decreased after construction. After construction of the entrance, the sliding zone of the slope increased and slope stability decreased because the shear strain and plastic zone in the slope over the tunnel entrance showed an increase relative to the lower part of the slope. To enhance the stability of the slope for construction of the tunnel entrance, countermeasures such as rock bolts, rock anchors, and FRP (Fiber glass Reinforced Plastic) grouting were adopted in light of the field conditions. Serial field monitoring performed to confirm the reinforcing effects of the adopted countermeasures revealed a small amount of horizontal deformation of the slope soils, most of the elastic deformation that can regain its former value. In addition, the axial forces of the rock bolt and anchor were more strongly affected by slope excavation during construction of the tunnel entrance than by tunnel excavation or the rainy season, and the axial forces tended to converge after excavation of the tunnel. Therefore, we can confirm that the slope is currently safe.

  • Geological and geophysical surveys were performed to examined the cause of the rock-mass slide occurred at the opening site of the Wanglim tunnel of the Seoul-Pusan High Speed Railway. The results of geophygical survey and geometrical analysis for the geological structures indicate that the rock-mass slide was triggered by the heavy rainfall which increases the groundwater level and results in high pore pressure in the N60$^{\circ}$ E-trending major fractured zone of the slope, and that the foliation dipping toward the vertical open face of the slope acted as a main sliding plane during movement.

  • The failure of cut slope and landslide sometimes come from a local downpour within a short duration in Korea. Especially, most of recent downpour converged upon a limited region and seemed the characteristics of guerilla. Characteristics of slopes failed due to local downpour are analyzed. failure mode is also analyzed with respect to the depth of soil layers and the change of groundwater level. To blow the influence factors of the slope stability during local downpour, the authors conducted field survey for failed slopes and tried to make a comparative study of 1,372 cut slope data distributed in the national road. FLAC-SLOPE(ITASCA Co.) is used to analyze slope stability with changing depth of soil layers and groundwater level. The result shows that the failed types of domestic slopes during local downpour are mainly shallow collapse and landslide. The change of soil depth and groundwater level have influenced on the stability of slopes.

  • The Gugogdong-Horyongbong valley forest in Odaesan National Park area was studied to investigate forest structure in relation to altitude and part of slope. Forty-eight quadrats were set up in the valley forest along altitude of 800m to 1,500m and part of the slote. With increasing elevation the important values of Quercus mongolica and Rhododendron schlippenvachii increased, while those of Abies holophulla, Ulmus davidiana var. japonica and Lindera obtusiloba decreased. As going from lower part to upper part of the slope, the importance values of Quercus mongolica and Rhododendron schlippenbachii increased while those of Acer mono and Ulmus laciniata decreased. Species diversity tended to decreased as increasing elevation. The range of similarity indices between elevation belts, and parts of the slope were 56.3~73.4% and 61.9~71.8%, respectively. According to importance value and cluster analysis, the studied valley forest was classified into tree forest communities of Abies holophulla-deciduous tree species community in lower and middle parts of slope at low and middle elevation belts, Quercus mongolica- coniferous tree species community in upper part of slope at low and middle elevation belts and lower and middle parts of slope at high elevation belt and Quercus mongolica community in upper part of slope at high elevation belt and top area.

  • When most of the industry and social indirect facilities such as the large structure, power plant or road, rail-road are constructed, the new slope may lead to the slope failure. The failure models for slopes have been developed by using the results of in-situ and laboratory tests to investigate the mechanisms and types of the slope failure. The safety factor of a slope may be obtained based on the proposed model and the slope can be reinforced to meet the design criteria. The slope should be reinforced by using the optimum model that properly reflects the site condition, the method of reinforcement includes the increased safety factor either by decreasing a slope angle or by reinforcing the slope.

  • Since landslide can cause huge damages to many facilities, close characterization of slopes is needed for appropriate reinforcements for the unstable ones in order to prevent the damages. Geophysical surveys, which can characterize a large area at a relatively low cost without disturbing slopes, have been widely employed for the assessment of slope stability in other countries. However, only conventional direct investigation methods are mainly used in Korea. In this paper, we analyzed various cases, which evaluated slope stabilities by characterizing slopes using geophysical exploration. First, we introduced changes in geophysical properties due to unstable media of slope like fracture location, fracture connectivity and distribution of groundwater level, and subsequently discussed the applicability of geophysical methods to the detection of the changes; the methods include electrical resistivity survey, seismic survey, self-potential survey, induced polarization survey and ground penetrating radar. Based on this description, we analyzed how geophysical surveys were performed on various slopes.
