In this paper, analysis results on the failure of slope behind a Plant Complex of Gimhae due to typhoon Rusa in 2002 are introduced. The left side of the slope was reinforced by soil nails and the right side of the slope was going to construct slope reinforcement works. In the slope failure, the damage area is about $34,000m^2$, the lower width of slope failure is about 230m, the upper width of slope failure is about 50m, and the height of slope failure is about 120m. The elevation of a bedrock in the right side of the slope was lower than the left side of the slope. Due to the depth of weathered soils and weathered rocks in right side of the slope was thick, it will be expected that the effects of pore-water pressure during the rainfalls are large. For the analysis of the failure mechanism, 3-dimensional numerical analysis was carried out by FLAC-3D.

The Daegi-cheon watershed is located in the upper part of the Han River, which has the representative highland vegetable growing complexes. This watershed has a large impact on the water quality and aquatic ecosystem in the upstream of the Han River by discharging a large amount of turbid water during rainfall season. For proposing an efficient turbid water management and policy, the analysis of the characteristics of flow rate and SS and its causes needs to be carried out preferentially. In this study, the relationship between flow rate and SS concentration was analyzed in the Daegi-cheon watershed, and in turn the turbidity characteristics were analyzed. As a result of the study, in the normal flood flow condition, it was shown that SS concentration changed arbitrarily due to various environmental factors. On the other hand, the SS concentration was considerably high in the very high flow condition. Based on the field survey, this could be the reason why the effects of the steep valley and slope collapse according to the very high flow rate as well as the source in the agricultural fields were greatly contributed. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a structural best management practice that can stabilize the steep slope and reduce river bed loss along with the typical source managements plans.
It has been pointed out that the collapses of unsaturated road embankments caused by earthquake are attributed to high water content caused by the seepage of the underground water and/or the rainfall infiltration. Hence, it is important to study influences of water content on the dynamic stability and deformation mode of unsaturated road embankments for development of a proper design scheme including an effective reinforcement to prevent severe damage. This study demonstrates dynamic centrifugal model tests with different water contents to investigate the effect of water content on deformation and failure behaviors of unsaturated road embankments. Based on the measurement of displacement, the pore water pressure and the acceleration during dynamic loading, dynamic behavior of the unsaturated road embankments with about optimum water content and the higher water content than the optimum one have been examined. In addition, an image analysis has revealed the displacement field and the distributions of strains in the road embankment, by which deformation mode of the road embankment with higher water content has been clarified. It has been confirmed that in the case of higher water content the settlement of the crown is large mainly owing to the volume compression underneath the crown, while the small confining pressure at the toe and near the slope surface induces large shear deformation with volume expansion.
Recently, GRS (Geosynthetic Retaining Segmental) wall has been widely used as a method to replace concrete retaining wall because of its excellent structural stability and economic efficiency. It has been variously applied for foundation, slope, road as well as retaining wall. The GRS wall system, however, has a weak point that is serious crack of wall due to stress concentration at curved part of it. In this study, therefore, behaviour of GRS wall according to shape of it, shich has convex and concave, are analysed and compared using Finite Element analysis as the fundamental study for design optimization. Results including lateral deflection, settlements of ground surface and wall obtained from 2D FE analysis are compared between straight and curved parts from 3D FE analysis.
Debris flows are a natural hazard which looks like a combination of flood, land and rock slide. Large rainfall in July 2006 produced several large scale debris flows and many small debris flows that resulted in loss of life and considerable property and railway damage, as was widely reported in the national media. The hazard "debris flow" is still insufficiently researched. Furthermore debris flows are very hard to predict. Flexible Ring net barriers are multi-functional mitigation devices commonly applied to rock fall or floating wood protection in floods, snow avalanches and also mud flows or granular debris flows, if properly dimensioned for the process or processes for which they are intended. Overtopping of the barriers by debris flows and sediment transport is possible, supporting the design concept that a series of barriers may be used to stop volumes of debris larger than are possible using only one barrier. The future for these barrier concepts looks promising because these barriers represent the state of art for such applications and are superior to many other available options.

The reinforced earth method is financially viable. Furthermore, it overcomes environmental limitations and is therefore employed in retaining walls, slopes, foundations, roads, embankments, and other structures. However, in some cases, reinforced retaining walls are not strong enough in the curved sections and can collapse. Such mishaps are believed to occur because of an unsatisfactory analysis of the curved sections of a reinforced retaining wall. Accordingly, with the aim of investigating the workability and structural safety of curved sections of various types, this study investigates the differences in the estimated horizontal displacements of curved sections of various types and subsequently uses this information to study and analyze preliminary data so that appropriate measures can be taken to resolve alignment issues. The results of an experiment reveal that when a load is applied to curved sections of both concave and convex types, the largest horizontal displacement occurs at the center of the section. In the concave form, the earth pressure force is directed inward, whereas in the convex form, this force is directed outward. As a result, the horizontal displacement in convex forms is larger than that in concave forms. Convex reinforced earth structures are subjected to earth pressures as well as lateral earth pressure, therefore horizontal displacements in convex curved sections is larger than that of concave curved sections.

In-stream large wood (LW) has a critical impact on the geomorphic characteristics relevant to ecosystem management and disaster prevention, yet relatively little is known about variations in its dynamics and subsequent export on the watershed-scale perspective in Korea. Here we review variations in the dynamics and subsequent export of LW as a function of stream size, which is appropriate for Korean mountain streams. In upstream channels with narrow bankfull widths and low stream discharges, a massive amount of LW, resulting from forest dynamics and hillslope processes, may persist for several decades on valley floor. These pieces, however, are eventually transported during infrequent debris flows from small tributaries, as well as peak hydrology in main-stem channels. During the transport, these pieces suffer fragmentation caused by frictions with boulders, and stream bank and bed. Although infrequent, these events can be dominant processes in the export of significant amounts of LW from upstream channel networks. In downstream channels with wide bankfull widths and high stream discharges, LW is dominantly recruited by forest dynamics and bank erosion only at locations where the channel is adjacent to mature riparian forests. With the LW pieces that are supplied from the upstream, these pieces are continuously transported downstream during rainfall events. This leads to further fragmentation of the LW pieces, which increases their transportability. With decreasing stream-bed slope, these floated LW pieces, however, can be stored and form logjams at various depositional sites, which were developed by interaction between channel forms and floodplains. These pieces may decay for decades and be subsequently transported as particulate or dissolved organic materials, resulting in the limitation of LW fluvial export from the systems. However, in Korea, such depositional sites were developed in the extremely limited streams with a large dimension and no flood history for decades, and thus it does not be expected that the reduction of LW export amount, which can be caused by the long-term storage. Our review presents a generalized view of LW processing and is relevant to ecosystem management and disaster prevention for Korean mountain streams.
