Ultrasonic testing of composite materials is much more difficult than that of isotropic materials, because of the beam skew phenomenon caused by their elastic anisotropy. An established analytical method exists for elastic wave propagation in anisotropic media as a result of previous research efforts. Yet, due to the complexity of the analytical method, solution of real problems must resort to the numerical method. In this work, analytical solutions have first been obtained for the wavefield due to a point source in a unidirectional fiber-reinforced composite, which may be modeled as transversely isotropic. Then, the corresponding numerical solutions have been obtained using the mass-spring lattice model(MSLM). The two solutions have agreed well with each other. Other problems such as reflection from free boundaries and scattering from cracks have also been solved numerically, and the results have been investigated from the viewpoint of wave mechanics. The numerical model whose validity has been confirmed by this work will be of great use in simulating ultrasonic testing of composite materials.

The cladding area of HANARO Research Reactor fuel rods should be checked not to have any defects larger than the size required at QA documents by using eddy torrent testing method doting fabrication process. To apply eddy current testing inspection to the fuel rods, encircling differential probes and standard specimen were designed and fabricated. The impedance of the fabricated probes was measured with impedance analyzer in order to cheek that the probe has a suitable impedance for the inspection frequency, and with this probe and MIZ-40A eddy current equipment, the detectability of this probes was investigated. The developed probes could detect artificial notch with 2mm length 10% depth of cladding thickness in cladding area. In addition, the probe was successfully applied to detect the defects in cladding area doting fabrication of the research reactor rods.

Beacuse intergranular attack (IGA), one of the locallized corrosion forms occurring on steam generator tubes, can not be fabricated by an electric discharge machining method, there are few data for the eddy current test (ECT) characteristics of IGA. In this paper, the characteristics of eddy current signals are evaluated using nonexpanded tubes with IGA defects formed in 0.1 M sodium tetrathionate solution at $40^{\circ}C$. The detectability and sizing accuracy of IGA were discussed in terms of the coil type and frequency of the ECT probes.

A plus-point eddy current test(ECT) probe was developed to examine the defects on the welds of pumps, valves, and pipings which are the major components of the electric power plants, non-destructive evaluation (NDE) techniques for detecting and sizing the flaws were studied adapting this probe. Differential plus-point ECT probe is consists of two "I"-type coils crossed each other and has an advantage having a small influence on the sensitivity by lift-off variation to the conventional types of probe. The specimens with crack-like electro discharge machining(EDM) notches on the weld of type 304 stainless-steel were fabricated in order to evaluate the plus-point ECT probe response to the flaws. NDE techniques to detect and size the flaws and estimate the flaw type were established with this specimens.

The thermal fatigue crack(TFC) is one of the life-limiting mechanisms at the nuclear power plant operating conditions. In order to evaluate the structural integrity, various non-destructive test methods such as radiographic test, ultrasonic test and eddy current are used in the industrial field. However, these methods have restrictions that defect detection is possible after the crack growth. For this reason, acoustic emission testing(AET) is becoming one of powerful inspection methods, because AET has an advantage that possible to monitor the structure continuously. Generally, every mechanism that affects the integrity of the structure or equipment is a source of acoustic emission signal. Therefore the noise filtering is one of the major works to the almost AET researchers. In this study, acoustic emission signal was collected from the pipes which were in the successive thermal fatigue cycles. The data were filtered based on the results from previous experiments. Through the data analysis, the signal characteristics to distinguish the effective signal from the noises for the TFC were proven as the waveform difference. The experiment results provide preliminary information for the acoustic emission technique to the continuous monitoring of the structure failure detection.

Acoustic emission(AE) has emerged as a powerful nondestructive tool to detect any further growth or expansion of preexisting defects or to characterize failure mechanisms. Recently, this kind of technique, that is an in-situ monitoring of inside damages of materials or structures, becomes increasingly popular for monitoring the integrity of large structures like a huge wind turbine blade. In this study, the activities of AE signals generated from external artificial sources was evaluated and located by new developed signal mapping source location method and this test is conducted by 750 kW full-scale blade. And a new source location method was applied to assess the damage in the wind turbine blade during step-by-step static load test. In this static loading test, we have used a full scale blade of 100 kW in capacity. The results show that the acoustic emission activities give a good agreement with the stress distribution and damage location in the blade. Finally, the applicability of the new source location method was confirmed by comparison of the result of source location and experimental damage location.

Pump car is an equipment that transports concrete products as needed to the place where they are poured. In order to pour a large amount of concrete in a short period of time, using a pump car is the most efficient in terms of economic efficiency and quality control. However, recently, many casualties have occurred due to boom damage during concrete pouring, so this study suggests that improvements are needed in the equipment manufacturing stage, inspection standards for old equipment, and equipment rental system. The reason is that, as a result of the finite element analysis of the pump car, the significant stress acting at the second stage of the boom and the maximum stress at the top of the boom were found to be 895.39 MPa, and M.S. Since it was evaluated the lowest at 0.04, the need for reinforcement was recognized. And it was confirmed that the 2nd stage boom was the most stressful and vulnerable part of the 1st to 5th stage booms. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the thickness and rigidity of members at the design and manufacturing stage, and to reinforce the steel plates of currently used equipment. In addition, it is urgent to establish a system that makes non-destructive testing mandatory for all general construction machinery and holds inspection agencies responsible for missing boom defects during non-destructive testing and regular inspections.

Failure of small bore piping welds is a recurring problem at nuclear power plants. And the socket weld cracking in small bore piping has caused unplanned plant shutdowns for repair and high economic impact on the plants. Consequently, early crack detection, including the detection of manufacturing defects, is of the utmost importance. Until now, the surface inspection methods has been applied according to ASME Section XI requirements. But the ultrasonic inspection as a volumetric method is also applying to enforce the inspection requirement. However, the conventional manual ultrasonic inspection techniques are used to detect service induced fatigue cracks. And there was uncertainty on manual ultrasonic inspection because of limited access to the welds and difficulties with contact between the ultrasonic probe and the OD(outer diameter) surface of small bore piping. In this study, phased array ultrasonic inspection technique is applied to increase inspection speed and reliability. To achieve this object, the 3.5 MHz phased array ultrasonic transducer are designed and fabricated. The manually encoded scanner was also developed to enhance contact conditions and maintain constant signal quality. Additionally inspection system is configured and inspection procedure is developed.

Residual foreign objects at the secondary side (top of the tubesheet and tube support plates) of a steam generator are likely to cause a leak by causing wear in the tube. The extent of wear is significantly affected by the material, shape, and size of the foreign object, and the corrosion properties of the tube. The presence of foreign objects at the top of the tubesheet and tube support plates has been identified using remote visual inspection methods such as the foreign object search and retrieval and eddy current test (ECT). The detection of the residual foreign object at the secondary side of a steam generator has limitations that depend on the material properties and the condition of contact with the tube. In this study, which is vertical and horizontal from the upper tubesheet, the corresponding bobbin ECT signals were collected and analyzed to measure its ability to detect foreign objects.
