  • This article presents a newly developed equipment system for computer-aided, magneto-inductive testing of metals for material properties. The advantages of ultramodern computer technology over conventional test mothods are illustrated, in particular the greatly simplified equipment adjustment and the extended possibilities of test data evaluation. The characterisitics of the new system of equipment are demonstrated by way of practical testing examples.

  • Tests on Liquid Penetrant products normally utilized in the temperature range $10^{\circ}C\;to\;40^{\circ}C$ have shown that the required sensibility can not be obtained at temperatures lower than $10^{\circ}C$ with the penetration and development time usually specified in the operating procedures. It is thus confirmed that $10^{\circ}C$ is the lowest allowable temperature for use of these products. The results obtained with a penetrant and develope. specially formulated for low temperatures (SHERWIN B 305+D100) are satisfactory between $0^{\circ}C\;and\;15^{\circ}C$.

  • Computerization of ultrasonic scanner is considered to achieve more quantitative and reliable ultrasonic testing. Testech LS-24 ultrasonic scanner is modified, and step motors in this modified ultrasonic scanner are driven by multiprogrammer controlled by computer. Two step motors can be controlled independently and simultaniously. The performance of computerized ultrasonic scanner is examined entloying modified C scan for a flat bottom hole ultrasonic reference block.

  • Welding residual stress was measured by ultrasonic birefringence technique. Acoustoelastic constant was taken by averaging the values in the literature. The initial birefringence from prefered orientation of grains was measured. The EMAT transducers were used to remove couplant effect. The results show that the distribution and magnitude of welding residual stress from ultrasonic measurement are in good agreements with those from semi destructive hole drilling measurement.

  • The impulse response function are studied using time domain Born approximation in two cases; firstly when the material parameters of a flaw are constant, secondly when the parameters are varying with positions. From the impulse response functions, characteristics can be learned about a flaw with high symmetry.

  • Brillouin time-domain analysis in optical fibres is a novel technique making possible a distributed measurement of temperature and strain over long distance and will deeply modify our view about monitoring large structures, such as dams, bridges, tunnels and pipelines, Optical fibre sensing will certainly be a decisive tool for securing dangerous installations and detecting environmental and industrial threats.

  • The specific strength of the fiber reinforced composite material is closely related to the anisotropy of the material. For the quantitative characterization of the anisotropy in the composite material, applied was CODF concept which was extensively used in the metallic material. As the results, the anisotropy of the material could be quantitatively analysed from the measurement of the phase velocities of the angular dependent $SH_o$ waves.

  • Ultrasonic testing is one of the most useful NDT method for detection of microdefect in the opaque materials. Recently, many applications of the ultrasonic techniques have been extended widely in the new field like electron is and advanced materials. From the result of the experiment, we have hardly found out a crack in the internal parts of the resin and a delamination between chip and resin because of poor performance of the system.

  • Flaws in GFRP(Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastics) were thermally detected using cholesteric liquid crystals. Presence of flaws changes the thermal conductivity of GFRP, and disturbs heat flow. When a uniform heat source is applied, the surface temperature of flawed region is different from that of sound region. The surface temperature distributions were measured by thermo-optic properties of liquid crystal. Since the colors of liquid crystal indicate temperature distribution of GFRP surface, the thermal disturbance by flaws could be detected. The locations of flaws in GFRP could be determined from the distribution of liquid crystal colors.
