  • A modular fish-bone girder pier consists of one main girder system named as "Spine Girder". Therefore, this pier can be most affected by torsion as well as flexural bending. The design considerations of the fish-bone girder pier are proposed to assure the reasonable design in this study. In order to investigate the behavior characteristics, structural analysis F.E model is developed, and the verification of the developed model is performed by comparison with experimental data. From the investigation of the structural behavior, the vertical stiffener is required at the bottom of bone-beams to prevent the excessive local stress. Also, it is found that the normal stress of the flange and the shear stress of the web and flange are dominantly affected by the warping torsion and pure torsion, respectively.

  • In order to verify the applicability of the developed modified parallel IWAN model. two types of cyclic torsional shear tests were performed using Kum-Kang and Toyoura sands. One was a symmetric-limit loading test and the other was an irregular loading test. Model parameters were derived from the symmetric limit loading tests at various relative densities and confining pressures. The modified parallel IWAN model can predict the cyclic hardening behavior of sands very well as increasing loading cycles in the symmetric-limit tests. Irregular loading tests were performed using the loading shape suggested by Pyke(1979). Cyclic behaviors under irregular loading were simulated using model parameters derived from symmetric limit loading test results of similar loading conditions. The predicted cyclic hardening behaviors under irregular loading matched well with experimental results and the applicability of the proposed model was verified.

  • The stiffness and mass matrices are developed for free torsional vibration analysis in linearly tapered thin-walled I-beams that takes into account the effect of warping torsion. The approximate shape functions are used for formulating stiffness and mass matrices. Significant improvements of accuracy and efficiency of free vibration analysis are achieved by using the stiffness and mass matrices developed in this study. Frequencies of free vibration of tapered members are compared with solutions based upon stepped representation of beam element and also are verified with model tests. The stiffness and mass matrices presented in this study can be used for the free vibration analysis of tapered and prismatic thin walled I-beams and space structures involving warping torsion.

  • In order to present the geometrically nonlinear F.E. formulation of space frames, two beam/column elements including the effects of transverse shear deformation and bending stretching coupling are developed. In the case of the first element (Finite segment method), the tangent stiffness matrices are derived by directly integrating the equilibrium equations, whereas in the case of the second element (Finite element method) elastic and geometric stiffness matrices are calculated by using the hermitian polynomials including shear deformation effect as the shape function. Both elements possess the usual twelve degrees of freedom. Also, the bowing function including shear deformation effects is obtained in order to account for the effect of shortening of member chord length due to the bending and torsional behavior. Numerical results are presented for the selected test problems which demonstrate that both elements represent reliable and highly accurate tools.

  • In the previous study(Kim 등, 2004), the finite element method was used for the vortical vibration analysis of suspension bridge with the effects of the shear deformation and the rotary inertia under moving load considering the bridge-vehicle interaction. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of an eccentric vehicle and shear deformation. So we firstly performs the eigenvalue analysis for the free vortical and the torsional vibration of suspension bridges using FEM analysis. Next the equations of motion considering interaction between suspension bridges and vehicles/trains are derived using the mode superposition method. And then dynamic analysis was performed using the Newmark method. Finally through the numerical examples, the dynamic responses of bridges are investigated according to the proposed procedure.

  • Deformational characteristics of soils, often expressed in terms of shear modulus and material damping ratios, are important parameters in the design of soil-structure systems subjected to cyclic and dynamic loadings. In this paper, deformational characteristics of dry sand at small to intermediate strains were investigated using resonant column/torsional shear(RC 175) apparatus. Both resonant column(dynamic) and torsional shear (cyclic) tests were performed in a sequential series on the same specimen. With the modification of motion monitoring system, the elastic zone, where the stress strain relationship is independent of loading cycles and strain amplitude, was veri tied and hysteretic damping was found even in this zone. At strains above cyclic threshold, shear modulus increases and damping ratio decreases with increasing number of loading cycles. Moduli and damping ratios of dry sand are independent of loading frequency and values obtained from pseudostatic torsional shear tests are Identical with the values from the dynamic resonant column test, provided the effect of number of loading cycles is considered in the conlparison. Therefore, deformational characteristics determined by RC/TS tests may be applied in both dynamic and static analyses of soil-structure systems.

  • The nonlinearity of a cable-stayed bridge results from the large displacement of main girder due to a long span, the catenary action of cables and the flexural stiffness reduced by large axial forces. The dynamic behaviour of a cable-stayed bridge plays an important role in determining its safety. Especially, when the eccentrically moving load is applied to a cable-stayed bridge, the torsional vibration and vertical vibration are coupled and moreover the variation of cable tensions shows important dynamic characteristics. This dissertation presents a theoretical study and a finite element procedure for analysis of a cable-stayed bridge under a eccentrically moving load. Attention is focused on the dynamic behaviours such as dynamic increments of cable tensions and nodal displacements, with the variety of velocities and eccentricities of moving load. It is found that a moving load with eccentricity can have significant effects upon the responses; the torsion of bridge deck and the increments of cable tensions, according to the present results in this study.

  • Most of the medium-size ships are powered by large-bore, long-stroke, slow-speed and two-stroke diesel engines in order to improve the fuel efficiency. Such a propulsion plant develops low-frequency excitation forces/moments of significant magnitude. A RO/RO car/truck carrier is also one of the cases. In this paper, the rational methods for analysis of vertical and coupled horizontal-torsional vibrations are presented. Taking account of unusual characteristics of the hull form and structural systems, the emphasis is put on modelling methods based on beam analogy, calculation of system parameters such as added mass and its center, polar added-mass moment of inertia, shear coefficient of hull sections and coupling degree in antisymmetric modes, and modal analysis of forced vibrations.

  • The water content of soil near the ground subgrade varies seasonally, and dynamic deformational characteristics of soil are affected by the variation of water content. Contrary to previous studies which used various specimens of different compaction moisture contents, the influences of water content and capillary Pressure on dynamic deformational characteristics of soil were investigated using the given specimen controlling the matric suction. RC/TS(resonant column and torsional shear) testing equipment was modified so that it can control water content with changing capillary pressure(matric suction). RC/TS tests were performed on subgrade soil collected in the KHC(Korea Highway Corporation) test road. In the field, the cross-hole tests were performed and the water contents were measured at the same site to verify the feasibility and applicability of RC/TS test results. As water content decreased, the tendency of increasing shear moduli in field was well matched with laboratory test results.
