  • Three-dimensional unsteady reacting flowfield generated by transverse hydrogen injection into a supersonic mainstream are numerically investigated using DES and finite-rate chemistry model. Comparisons are made with experimental results to investigate the turbulent reacting flow physics. The numerical OH distribution describes well the experimental OH-PLIF result, while the numerical ignition delay time shows some disparity due to the restricted available experimental data.

  • Euler codes or Navier-Stokes codes for compressible flows suffer severe degradation in convergence as Mach number approaches zero. The convergence problem arose from the wide disparity in characteristic speeds can be solved using preconditioning methods without large modifications. In this paper, a preconditioned RANS(Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) solver is developed for analysis of low Mach number flows. In order to validate the method, computational examples are chosen and the results are compared with the experimental data and the existing computed results showing a good accuracy and convergence characteristics for steady inviscid, laminar and turbulent flows at low Mach number.

  • This paper numerically examines, straight and twisted electrical heat trace installations for their anti-freezing effects on water inside a pipe. The unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with an energy equation were solved to compare the two installation methods. The heat conduction of the pipe with a heat source interacts with the natural convection of the water, and the conjugate heat transfer was considered using a commercial code (ANSYS-FLUENT) based on a SIMPLE-type algorithm. Numerical experiments, were done to investigate the isotherms and the vector fields in the water region to extract the evolutions of the minimum and maximum temperatures of the water inside the pipe. There was no substantial difference in the anti-freezing effects between the straight and twisted. Therefore, the straight installation is recommended after considering the damage and short circuit behavior of the electrical heat trace.

  • The 3-dimensional unsteady compressible flows around the high speed train have been simulated for the train entering a tunnel and for passing another train. The simulation method employs the implicit approximation-factorization finite difference algorithm for the inviscid Euler equations in general curvilinear coordinates. A moving grid scheme is applied in order to resolve the train movement relative to the tunnel and the other train. The velo-city and pressure fields and pressure drag are calculated to study the effects of tunnel and the other train. The side directional force which is time dependent is also computed for the passing train. Pressure distribution shows that the compression wave is generated in front of the train noise just after the tunnel entrance and proceeds along the inside of tunnel.

  • Numerical analysis code has been developed for investigating the combustion characteristics in a slab heater of a steel mill company. Unsteady full 3-Dimensional behaviour can be predicted with the code. Premixed flame model is adopted for combustion phenomena. And eddy dissipation model is used for turbulent flow and non gray FVM method for radiation. Slab movement can be fully traced from entrance into heater until it's exit and computation is performed during that period. Code was validated by comparing the calculation results with experimental ones for the bench scale heater.

  • A three-dimensional parallel Euler flow solver has been developed for the simulation of unsteady rotor-fuselage interaction aerodynamics on unstructured meshes. In order to handle the relative motion between the rotor and the fuselage, the flow field was divided into two zones, a moving zone rotating with the blades and a stationary zone containing the fuselage. A sliding mesh algorithm was developed for the convection of the flow variables across the cutting boundary between the two zones. A quasi-unsteady mesh adaptation technique was adopted to enhance the spatial accuracy of the solution and to better resolve the wake. A low Mach number pre-conditioning method was implemented to relieve the numerical difficulty associated with the low-speed forward flight. Validations were made by simulating the flows around the Georgia Tech configuration and the ROBIN fuselage. It was shown that the present method is efficient and robust for the prediction of complicated unsteady rotor-fuselage aerodynamic interaction phenomena.

  • The effectiveness of two passive control techniques for alleviating the pressure oscillation generated in a supersonic cavity flow is investigated numerically. The passive devices suggested in the present research include a triangular bump and a sub-cavity installed near the upstream edge of a rectangular cavity. The supersonic cavity flow characteristics are examined by using the three-dimensional, unsteady Wavier-Stokes computation based on a finite volume scheme. Large eddy simulation (LES) is carried out to properly predict the turbulent features of cavity flow. The results show that the pressure oscillation near the downstream edge dominates overall time-dependent cavity pressure variations. Such an oscillation is attenuated more considerably using the sub-cavity compared with other methods, and a larger sub-cavity leads to better control performance.

  • Turbulent flows in an axisymmetric reciprocating engine are numerically simulated at it's suction and compression stage. Amounts of heat transfer through the wall of the cylinder are also estimated. k-.epsilon. turbulence model is adopted and the law of the wall is applied at grid-points near the wall. More than 40 * 40 grids are reguried to reasonably predict flows and the 3-level finite difference scheme for the time derivative term appears to be effective rather than the 2-level scheme. Calculated mean velocity distributions shows good agreements with an available experimental data. The program reasonably simulates flow patterns and pressures throughout the suction and the compression stages of the reciprocating engine. Predicted intensities of turbulence are still deviated from measured data. Further researches for turbulence modeling are expected.

  • In this study, the unsteady flow field induced by a high-speed train passing through a tunnel is numerically simulated by using an axi-symmetric Euler Equation. The modified patched grid scheme applied to a structured grid system was used to handle the relative motion of a train. The hybrid-dimensional approach which mixed 1D and axi-symmetric dimension was used to reduce the computation time and memory storage. By employing the hybrid-dimensional approach, a long tunnel as much as 5 km was able to be simulated efficiently. The results show that the maximum pressure rise in the tunnel by the entrance of the train is a function of both train speed and train-tunnel cross-sectional area ratio. The unsteady pressure fluctuation in the tunnel and around the train was also investigated in the real condition; Korean high-speed train on the Seoul-Pusan line.
