  • In the present study, the microscopic degradation of copper and copper alloy subjected to cyclic deformation has been evaluated by the electrical resistivity measurement using the DC four terminal potential method. The copper (Cu) and copper alloy (Cu-35Zn), whose stacking fault energy is much different each other, were cyclically deformed to investigate the response of the electrical resistivity to different dislocation substructures. Dislocation cell substructure was developed in the Cu, while the planar array of dislocation structure was developed in the Cu-35Zn alloy increasing dislocation density with fatigue cycles. The electrical resistivity increased rapidly in the initial stage of fatigue deformation in both materials. Moreover, after the fatigue test it increased by about 7 % for the Cu and 6.5 % for the Cu-35Zn alloy, respectively. From these consistent results, it may be concluded that the dislocation cell structure responds to the electrical resistivity more sensitively than the planar array dislocation structure evolved during cyclic fatigue.

  • Soil deformations such as settlement, heaving and lateral flow have frequently happened on marine reclaimed soft grounds due to embankment filling or banking. The electrical resistivity survey was applied to investigate on ground surface such soil deformation without disturbance of ground. A test embankment was performed to assess soil deformation in marine reclaimed soft grounds, where was located at Sihwa area in western coast of Korean peninsula. The soft ground was composed of clayey sediments. After embankment filling, the boundary of soil deformation affected by the filling could be investigated with application of the electrical resistivity survey. The result of electric resistivity survey shows that the extent of deformation is about 5 m laterally to the southern direction of embankment and about 5~6 m vertically in depth, which is about 1-1.2 times of embankment height. This shows that the electric resistivity survey can be applied to interpret the ground deformation in a soft ground region.

  • In this study, we examined the applicability of a 3D electrical resistivity technique for the probing of underground cavities at a field test site in a karst area in Yongweol-ri, Muan-gun, in the south-western part of the Korean peninsula. At the test site, where the ground has subsided in the past, underground cavities are commonly found in the limestone bedrock, which is overlain with alluvial deposits. The limestone cavities at the test site are mostly filled with groundwater and clay; hence, they show levels of electrical resistivity that are significantly lower than those of the surrounding host bedrock. The results of this study demonstrate that the zones of low resistivity correspond to the zones of the cavities identified in the boreholes at the site, and that our 3D electrical resistivity survey is a very effective tool for detecting and mapping underground cavities in a karst area.

  • Resistivity monitoring data at embankment dams are affected by the seasonal temperature variation. Especially when the seasonal temperature variation is large like Korea, the temperature effects may not be ignored in the longterm resistivity monitoring. Therefore, temperature effects can make it difficult to accurately interpret the resistivity monitoring data. In this study, through analyzing the time series of ground temperature collected at an embankment dam, ground temperature variations are calculated approximately. Then, based on the calculated temperature profile with depth, the inverted resistivity model of the embankment dam is corrected to remove the temperature effects. From these corrections, it was confirmed that the temperature effects are significant in the upper, superficial part of the dam, but can be ignored at depth. However, temperature correction based only on the temperature distribution in the dam body cannot remove the temperature effect thoroughly. To overcome this problem, the effect of temperature variation in the reservoir water seems to be incorporated together with the air temperature variation.

  • Membrane fouling characteristics in the membrane-coupled activated sludge system were investigated. The influence of the floc size variation on the filtration resistance was analyzed using resistance-in-series model and mixed liquor was fractionated into three components to verify which component would give rise to a major contribution to the total resistance. The microbial floc size was rapidly reduced during the initial 4~6 hours of operation, and then decreased slightly but steadily, followed by leveling off at the size of 20 $\mu$m. The specific resistance of activated sludge increased with operation time, and measured values of specific resistance were matched well with the values estimated on the basis of the mean particle size in the mixed liquor. The contribution of soluble organics and cells to the total resistance was relativdy small compared with that of the supematant. Colloidal particles in the supematant showed much higher specific resistance than that of microbial floc, and played the most important role in the cake resistance.

  • It is not possible to define the earth's interior because of it complicity. However, it can be interpreted directly and/ or indirectly. Geophysics is the subject of this study. To study the possibility of construction supervision by geophysical method, geophysical prospecting was performed and studied at the SamYang pumping well area in Cheju Island, where, although underground dam was constructed, the saline water invade the pumping well area. This study focuses on the construction supervision by electrical measurements. Two electric resistivity survey lines are installed in the pumping well site, and at each line electric survey was conducted at ebb and flow tides. To increase the data quality SP (self-potential) survey was also performed. As a result the geophysical exploration methods explained the defect of construction well, and It shows that geophysical probe can be a useful tool for the construction supervision.

  • All the resistivity data contain various kinds of noise. The major sources of noise in DC resistivity measurement are high contact resistance, measurement errors, and sporadic background noise. Thus, it is required to measure data noise to accurately interpret resistivity data. Reciprocal measurements can provide a measure of data precision and noise. In this study, we proposed a data-weighting method from reciprocity measurement. Furthermore, a data-weighting method using both the reciprocity error and data-misfit in the inversion process was studied. Applying the data-weighting method to the inversion of 3D resistivity data, it was confirmed that local anomalies are slightly suppressed in the final inversion results.

  • As a part of basic studies on monitoring and saturation estimation of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) storage using resistivity survey, laboratory experiment has been conducted to measure the change of the electrical resistivity through repeated experiments of supercritical $CO_2$ and brine water injection into homogeneous and heterogeneous sandstones. The $CO_2$ saturation is estimated by using resistivity index based on the resistivity measurements. The experimental results of two types of sandstones show that the effect of pore structure in the rock and the effect of contained clay minerals in the rock can be affected to calculate the $CO_2$ saturation. The result can be useful to evaluate the $CO_2$ saturation based on resistivity survey at the site where $CO_2 sequestrates.

  • Resistivity seismic dilatometer (RSDMT) system is introduced. The resistivity module for obtaining resistivity-depth plot and seismic module for obtaining wave velocity-depth plot are attached to the conventional flat dilatometer testing equipment. To enhance the reliability and repeatability of seismic part in RSDMT, automatic testing system including automatic surface source, PC based data acquisition system and operating program was constructed. To obtain real resistivity value of soil, geometric factor for the array of electrodes in RSDMT was derived empirically. The verification studies for the developed RSDMT system were performed with SPT, CPTu, bender element test and DC resistivity survey. Through one penetration of RSDMT, various soil parameters were obtained and the reliability and repeatability of developed RSDMT system could be checked.

  • Unexpected anomalies in the geotechnical investigation at design stage may cause problems during tunnel excavation. Therefore, it is important to predict the ground condition ahead of a tunnel face during tunnel excavation in order to prevent tunnel collapse. Despite the fulfillment of an electrical resistivity survey at the tunnel face, the existing electrical resistivity survey program can produce distorted results by the limitation of tunnel modelling. In this background, this study develops a modelling program for an electrical resistivity survey considering the tunnel shape. Numerical simulation and inverse calculation were performed for the electrical resistivity survey in the tunnel using the developed program. As a result, it was proved that the developed program could predict accurately the anomalous object's location and condition ahead of the tunnel face.
