  • In this paper, we have derived a continuum-based adjoint design sensitivity of general performance functionals with respect to Young' modulus and heat conduction coefficient for steady-state nonlinear thermoelastic problems. An adjoint equation for temperature and displacement fields is defined for the efficient computation of the coupled field design sensitivity. Through numerical examples, we investigated the mesh dependency of the topology optimization method in the thermoelastic problems. Also, comparing the dominant loading cases of thermal and mechanical ones, the loading dependency of topology design optimization in coupled multi-physics problems is investigated.

  • A simply supported rectangular thin plate with temperature distribution varying over the thickness is analyzed. Since the thermal deflections are large compared to the plate thickness during bending and membrane stresses are developed md as such a nonlinear stress analysis is necessary. For the geometrically nonlinear, large deflection behavior of the plate, the classical von Karman equations are used. These equations are solved numerically by using the finite difference method. An iterative technique is employed to solve these quasi-linear algebraic equations. The results obtained from the suggested method are presented and discussed.

  • Spatial structure is an appropriate shape that resists external force only with in-plane forte by reducing the influence of bending moment, and it maximizes the effectiveness of structure system. the spatial structure should be analyzed by nonlinear analysis regardless static and dynamic analysis because it accompanys large deflection for member. To analyze the spatial structure geometrical and material nonlinearity should be considered in the analysis. In this paper, a geometrically nonlinear finite element model for plane truss structures is developed, and material nonlinearity is also included in the analysis. Arc-length method is used to solve the nonlinear finite element model. It is found that the present analysis predicts accurate nonlinear behavior of plane truss.

  • A domain/boundary decomposition method is applied for efficient analyses of thermo-elasto-viscoplastic damage and contact problems under the assumption of infinitesimal deformation. For the decomposition of a whole domain and contact boundaries, all the equality constraints on the interface and contact interfaces are restated with simple penalty functional. Therefore, the non-linearity of the problem is localized within finite element matrices in a few subdomains and on contact interfaces. By setting up suitable solution algorithms, the computational efficiency can be improved considerably. The general tendency of the computational efficiency is illustrated with some numerical experiments.

  • A Practical and easily applicable methods for the numerical analysis and the optimum design of continuous and horizontally curved two-way slab systems with twelve possible edge conditions are presented. The proposed method for the numerical structural analysis is based on the use of design moment coefficients which are derived from the elastic theory of thin curved plates. The optimum values are selected from within the feasible region in the design space defined by the limit state requirements. The sequential linear programming is introduced as an analytical method of nonlinear optimization. The optimum design variables, including a effective depth and transformed steel ratios per unit width of middle and column strips of slabs, are then determined.

  • The free vibrations of thermally buckled, simply supported, symmetrically laminated, rectangular, and quasi-isotropic plates are investigated. The nonlinear postbuckling analysis is performed by the finite element method based on the first order shear deformable plate theory with the use of von Karman type nonlinear strains and the Duhamel-Newman type constitutive law. The postbuckling solutions are used to obtain free vibration responses of buckled plates. Several numerical examples for quasi-isotropic laminated plates are considered. The effects of width-to-thickness ratios and aspect ratios on the free vibration characteristics of buckled plates are investigated.
