  • A methods to calculate non-linear moment-curvature relations of high-strength PSC flexural members for numerical analysis has been proposed. The moment-curvature relations were calculated with assumptions of design codes and by the layer method. The results of the proposed procedures for moment-curvature relations and numerical analysis were compared with those of pre-existing tests. The absorption energy rate of the design codes was about 30% larger than that of the layer method. The ultimate load and the external work of the layer method were 90% and 85% of those of tests, respectively The ultimate load of the strength design method was 97% of that of tests, but the external work was over-estimated with 122%. The ultimate load and external work by the proposed equation of the CEB-FIP Model Code were 113% and 173% of those of tests, respectively. It show that the use of ultimate strain of 0.0035 should be over-estimated for high-strength concrete. The procedure of non-linear numerical analysis of this research could be stably simulated the behavior of concrete flexural members until the ultimate state, and calculate results of the load-deflection relation and cracking pattern were very similar with those of tests.

  • This paper is concerned with the elastic buckling of thin-walled arches that are subjected to uniform bending. Nonlinear strain-displacement relations with the initial curvature are substituted into the second variation of the total potential energy to obtain the energy equation including initial curvature effects. The approximation for initial curvature effects that the bending normal strain distribution is linear across the cross section is applied consistently in the derivation process. The closed form solution is obtained for flexural-torsional buckling of arches under uniform bending and, it is compared with the previous theoretical results.

  • An analytical procedure to analyze reinforced concrete (RC) beams subject to monotonic loadings is proposed on the basis of the moment-curvature relations of RC sections. Unlike previous analytical models which result the overestimation of stiffnesses and underestimation of structural deformations induced from ignoring the shear deformation and assuming perfect-bond condition between steel and concrete, the proposed relation considers the rigid-body-motion due to anchorage slip at the fixed end. The advantages of the proposed relation, compared with the previous numerical models, are on the promotion in effectiveness of analysis and reflection of influencing factors which must be considered in nonlinear analysis of RC beam by taking into account the nonlinear effects into the simplifying moment-curvature relation. Finally, correlation studies between analytical and experimental results are conducted to establish the applicability of the proposed model to the nonlinear analysis of RC structures.

  • For performance-based design using nonlinear static analysis, it is required to predict the inelastic behavior of structural members accurately. In the present study, a nonlinear numerical analysis was peformed to develop the method describing the moment-curvature relationship of structural wall with boundary confinement. Through the numerical analysis, variations of behavioral characteristics and failure mechanism with the arrangement of vertical reinforcement and the length of boundary confinement were studied. According to the analysis, the maximum moment-carrying capacity of structural walls with adequately confined boundary elements is developed at the moment the unconfined concrete reaches the ultimate compressive strain. Walls with flexural re-bars concentrated on the boundaries fails in a brittle manner. As vortical re-bars in the web increases, the brittle failure is prevented and a ductile failure occurs. Based on the findings, moment-curvature curves for walls with a variety of re-bar arrangement were developed. According to the proposed relationships, deformability of the structural walls wth boundary confinement increases as the compressive strength of the confined concrete increases compared to the applied compressive force.

  • This paper presents moment-curvature analytical method of concrete filled steel tubular members considering intensity increase phenomenon by triaxial compression stress generation. For this purpose, this study considers buckling characteristics about compression department of steel members that filled up light weight and normal concrete. The analytical results are compared with the test results. Even if beam that filled up light weight concrete was calculated moment-curvature relationship easily analytically and could know that analytical results estimates as well agreed with the test results in case filled up normal concrete. In addition, the efficiency and applicabilities of the proposed moment curvature relationship algorithm are verified through conventional experimental results.

  • The present study shows the moment-average curvature relationship and effective inertia moment of RC beams obtained from the nonlinear analysis based on the parabola-rectangular stress-strain curve defined in EC-2 code. The variables examined are concrete strength and steel ratio, and moment-average curvature relationship and effective inertia moment obtained are compared with those of the current KCI provisions. As the results of the comparison, the followings could be said: Since the KCI provisions(the Branson method) were originally derived based on the experimental data ranged from 2.2 to 4 of $M/M_{cr}$ and 1.3 to 3.5 of $I_{ut}/I_{cr}$, thereby within these ranges the inertia moments obtained from the nonlinear analysis are closely agreed with those predicted by the Branson method. However, beyond those range the remarkable difference could be found between the two results. In particular, for beams having low steel ratio the inertia moment resulted from the nonlinear analysis are significantly smaller than those obtained from the KCI(Branson) method. This result may imply that the deflection of lightly reinforced members, such as slabs in buildings, becomes much larger than those calculated according to the current design provisions.

  • A moment-curvature relationship to simulate the behavior of reinforced concrete beam under cyclic loading is introduced. Unlike previous moment-curvature models and the layered section approach, the proposed model takes into consideration the bond-slip effect by using monotonic moment-curvature relationship constructed on the basis of the bond-slip relation and corresponding equilibrium equation at each nodal point. In addition, the use of curved unloading and reloading branches inferred from the stress-strain relation of steel gives more exact numerical result. The advantages of the proposed model, comparing to layered section approach, may be on the reduction in calculation time and memory space in case of its application to large structures. The modification of the moment-curvature relation to reflect the fixed-end rotation and pinching effect is also introduced. Finally, correlation studies between analytical results and experimental studies are conducted to establish the validity of the proposed model.

  • An analytical study on the behavior of composite beams, which are composed of cold-formed profiled steel sheeting and normal strength concrete, is described. An analytical method to trace the nonlinear behavior of a composite beam is developed to include the nonlinear material properties of steel sheeting, reinforcing steel bar and concrete. A simple Power Model has also been proposed for the nonlinear moment-curvature relation of the composite beam. The model, which has been originally used to predict the flexural capacity of the beam to column connections, is adapted to the composite beams. The load-deflection behavior of the beams has been simulated by the step-by-step numerical integration using the moment-curvature relation obtained by the Power Model. The results have been compared with test results.

  • Concrete-filled steel tube columns are expected to have confined effects of the steel on the concrete and reinforced local buckling effects of the concrete. After comparing the results of existing studies with the experimental results from this study, the stress-strain relations were modified by evaluating the load-displacement with consideration of the confined effects. The effects of the parameters on the load-displacement and moment-curvature relationship according to the sectional and material properties were analyzed.
