  • This study intends to figure out the variables affecting the degree of female undergraduates' perceived risk of smoking and utilize them as foundational data for educating them to quit smoking. Thereupon, it conducted a self-administered survey from May 18 till 25 of 2009 to 231 female undergraduates attending S University located in Gyeonggi-do. The study tool contains 19 items of general characteristics and 8 of the degree of perceived risk of smoking. The data collected were analyzed by SPSS program, and the following results were gained. 1. According to the result on the degree of female undergraduates' perceived risk of smoking, the degree was shown high as the average was 4.32 among the perfect score of 5; thus, the degree of perceived risk of smoking was high. 2. In terms of the household economic level, female undergraduates with the lower economic level indicated the higher degree of perceived risk of smoking. There existed significant difference by their economic level (F=7.14, p<.01). 3. In regard of whether the female undergraduate smokes or not, the non-smoker perceives the degree of risk of smoking more highly than the smoker does; there is significant difference by whether they smoke or not (t=-2.43, p<.05). 4. About the number of friends who smoke, female undergraduates with one smoking friend show the highest degree of perceived risk of smoking. Those haying three or more smoking friends indicate the low degree of perceived risk of smoking. There exists significant difference by the number of smoking friends they have (F=3.14, p<.05). 5. According to the degree of perceived risk of smoking by their school life satisfaction, the female undergraduates expressing 'dissatisfaction' show the highest degree of perceived risk of smoking while 'satisfaction' indicates the average level. This was statistically significant difference (F=4.81, p<.01). Therefore, it is thought that it will be necessary to develop programs based on this research which can allow female undergraduates to team the importance of quitting smoking and actively participate in the education for it.

  • This study determines the differences between Korean female university students and their Chinese counterparts residing in Korea by evaluating the subjective sensation and tactile preference in fabrics for casual shirts. Seven types of white causal shirt fabrics were selected as specimens from those available in spring and autumn shirt collection. The fabrics were made from various fibers (cotton 100%, polyester 100%, flax 100%, polyester 80%/cotton 20%, polyester 65%/cotton 35%, polyester 50%/cotton 45%/spandex 5%, and polyester 50%/modal 50%). Forty Korean and Chinese female university students subjectively assessed the subjective sensation of fabrics used for casual shirts. Participants were asked to observe the seven types of fabrics and complete the questionnaire. The subjective sensation to be assessed for white casual shirt fabrics was classified into the following four factors: smoothness, lightness, softness, and stretchiness. Subjective sensation factors showed partially significant differences by nationality. Korean female students evaluated cotton fabric as being light, whereas their Chinese counterparts evaluated the polyester/cotton/spandex blended fabric as light. Korean female students evaluated polyester/modal blended fabric as being stretchable. The tactile preference for fiber composition of the fabrics showed partially significant differences by nationality. Korean female students preferred cotton 80%/polyester 20% blended fabric, polyester 50%/cotton 45%/spandex 5% blended fabric, and flax 100% fabric. The subjective sensation of the fabrics had different effects on preferences by nationality. Smoothness and softness had positive effects on preferences for the fabrics of Korean students. However, smoothness, softness, and stretchiness had positive effects on the preferences of Chinese students. The subjective sensation and tactile preference for casual shirt fabrics showed a difference between Korean female students and their Chinese counterparts. Therefore, when planning casual shirt fabrics for female university students, it is necessary to reflect on these differences in subjective sensation and tactile preference.

  • This descriptive study looks into the levels of BMI, dietary habits, body image, and eating attitudes which have a major impact on the obesity management of female college students. A total of 173 female college students from the same school participated in this study by filling out a self-administered questionnaire investigating actual conditions. The average age of the participants was 19.5 years old and the average BMI was $21.8kg/m^2$. There were statistically significant differences in dietary habit at home (t=2.957, p=.004), eating attitudes BMI (F=5.324, p=.006), actual body image within perceived body esteem and BMI (F=36.979, p=.000), level of state body esteem BMI (F=11.539, p=.000), level of eating attitudes BMI(F=5.324, p=.006). Among the relationships between variables, the higher the BMI, the higher the score for perceived body esteem and problems concerning eating attitudes became prevalent. The higher the actual body image score, the lower the state body esteem and problems concerning eating attitudes became prevalent. Therefore, there is a need for education that enhances positive body image and eating attitudes in order for female college students to manage obesity due to dietary habits.

  • Appearance has become an important means of expressing oneself in modern society, and women often desire to lose weight. Therefore, this study examined the diets of female college students with high weight loss needs and analyzed the effects of their body image, sociocultural attitude, body stress and diet behavior on intake weight loss products. Data were collected from 220 Korean female college students from June to July using an online survey program. The questionnaires included body image scale, Sociocultural Attitude Towards Appearance Questionnaire (SATAQ), Body Attitudes Questionnaire (BAQ) and diet behaviors scale. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, the $x^2$-test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and logistic regression analysis using the SPSS 22.0 program. There were significant differences in body image, SATAQ, obesity stress and diet behavior between groups. All variables were significantly correlated with each other. Factors influencing weight loss products intake by female university students were SATAQ (OR=1.15, CI=1.03-1.29), obesity stress (OR=1.13, CI=1.06-1.20), diet behaviors (OR=1.21, CI=1.10-1.33), and knowledge regarding the side effects of weight loss products (OR=3.86, CI=1.62-9.20). Thus, it is necessary to teach female college students to recognize healthy weight control methods. Moreover, if weight loss products are needed, appropriate information should be provided regarding the ingredients and side effects of the product.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of obesity on health by analyzing the factors which are related to obesity through the questionnaires on the dietary pattern, nutrient intake and physical measurements. The subjects, 419 college women aged 20 to 24 year-old, were randomly selected from Seoul and data were collected during March to May, 2008 and classified as under underweight, normal weight, and obesity groups according to BMI. However, weight, skeletal muscle mass, body fat mass, fat free mass, percentage of body fat, and waist to hip ratio showed significant differences among all the groups (p<0.05). In the obese group, 77.8% ate fat-rich foods such as galbi and samgyopsal more than two times per week, 66.7% ate vegetables other than kimchi (p<0.05) as compared to the underweight and normal groups by mini dietary assessment (p<0.05). The cholesterol intakes of the underweight, normal weight, and obese groups were $164.67{\pm}114.52mg/dL$, $143.31{\pm}99.58mg/dL$, and $121.92{\pm}54.91mg/dL$, respectively, and the obese group had a significantly lower intake than the other groups (p<0.05). The serum total cholesterol levels of the underweight, normal, and obese groups were $177.04{\pm}26.36mg/dL$, $189.46{\pm}29.05mg/dL$, and $170.00{\pm}12.75mg/dL$, respectively, and the obese group showed lower total cholesterol level than the other groups (p<0.05). The triacylglycerol level of the obese group ($132.00{\pm}64.60mg/dL$) was significantly higher than the other two groups (p<0.05). The HDL-cholesterol levels of the underweight, normal weight, and obese groups were $51.92{\pm}9.39mg/dL$, $59.20{\pm}13.53mg/dL$, and $43.00{\pm}8.98mg/dL$, respectively, showing that the obese subjects had significantly lower HDL-cholesterol levels as compared to the subjects in the other groups (p<0.05). The HDL-C/LDL-C ratios of the underweight ($0.52{\pm}0.45$) and normal weight ($0.59{\pm}0.23$) groups were higher than the ratio of the obese group ($0.41{\pm}0.06$). Total cholesterol were positively correlated with LDL-cholesterol (r=0.768, p<0.01), but triacylglycerol were adversely correlated with HDL-cholesterol. In conclusion, our results show that college-aged women in Seoul should be encouraged to amend their overall dietary habits, make a dietary plan that fits their individual needs, and maintain an effective exercise schedule.
