  • The purpose of this study was to identify the concepts of body image, weight control and food behavior in 520 Korean high school seniors from Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. A questionnaire survey was conducted to investigate body image, concern of weight control, experience of weight control, the first time to try weight control, plan for weight control, reasons of weight control and food behaviors related with weight control. Anthropometric parameters such as weight and height were measured. Finally, data from 497 high school seniors were used for statistical analysis. The results were as follows. Many subjects had misperceptions. Among the subjects who perceived themselves as 'fat', 57.8% were normal weight and 0.5% underweight. Among the subjects who perceived themselves as 'thin', 59.5% were normal weight, 0.9% overweight and 0.9% obese. Girls were more concerned about weight control than boys (4.20 vs. 3.66). Weight loss had been experienced by 61.5% of the subjects and weight gain by 12.8%. First weight control was attempted by 71.3% of the subject at high school and by 28.7% at middle school. The majority of subjects planned for weight control before their freshman year. The boys choose 'health' as the primary reason for weight control, whereas the girls chose 'good appearance'. The total score of food behaviors varied significantly according to BMI. Overweight and obese subjects had more desirable food behaviors than normal weight and underweight subjects (24.00, 24.06 vs. 21.92, 21.52). However, total scores of food behaviors showed no variation according to sex, weight control attempt and body image. In conclusion, the high school seniors had misconceptions about body image and weight control. They were exposed to a high risk of inappropriate weight control and food behaviors. Therefore, proper nutritional education programs need to be developed for high school seniors to prevent nutrition problems related to weight control and to maintain desirable food behaviors.

  • This study aims to analyzed the health behaviors, dietary behaviors, and physical activities of Korean adolescents and to identify the factors and influences of these behaviors on obesity and weight control. The subjects and methods of this study involved a secondary analysis using data from the 2023(19th) Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey. Variables such as gender, age, education level, subjective health status, dietary behaviors, physical activity, obesity on weight control efforts were utilized, and statistical significance was confirmed using the SPSS. In terms of subjective body perception, reported feeling "slightly overweight(30.1%)", while "very overweight(7.5%)". The frequency of sweet beverage consumption was reported as "do not drink(6.2%)" and "once daily(10.4%)". The frequency of fast food consumption was notably high, "do not eat(6.7%)" and "1 to 2 times a week(56.7%)". Regarding physical activity in the past week, did not engage in physical activity for more than 60 minutes a day(31.8%), did not participate in high-intensity exercise(24.1%), and did not engage in strength training(50.6%). Conversely, in physical activity for more than 60 minutes daily(7.1%), in high-intensity physical activity daily(6.4%), and strength training daily(5.3%). The results showed that the number of days of strength training(𝛽=.131), high-intensity physical activity(𝛽=.069), days of physical activity(𝛽=.045), and frequency of sweet beverage consumption(𝛽=-.035) were identified as factors influencing weight control efforts(p<.001). Based on this study, we aims to suggest practical strategies for solving the problems of adolescent obesity and weight control, and to contribute to providing basic data necessary for the healthy growth and development of adolescents.

  • This study was intended to evaluate the weight control program for 18 obese female college students during 9 weeks. The weight control program was composed of periodical counsel for self-control of dietary attitude and exercise with personal/group program. The female college students were average 21.3 years old and average 161.8 cm of height. The subjects were classified into 2 groups based on BMI: overweight group $25\le{BMI}<27$, obese group BMI$\ge$27. The subjects were average 71.56 kg of weight and $27.25 kg/m^2$ of BMI before they joined the program. The prompt of joining was less self-confidence for appearance. After 9 weeks, the overweight group lost their weight about 3.28 kg and also reduced 1.61 percentage of body fat. The obese group also lost their weight about 3.0 kg but reduced only 0.8 percentage of body fat. The serum levels of total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol dropped significantly (p<0.05) in the overweight group. The $VO_2$ max inclosed 2.71 mL/kg/min in the overweight group. The obese group reduced caloric intakes from $109.2\%\;to\;86.5\%$ of RDA. The scores of dietary attitude such as eating speed, snack frequency, watching TV or reading during the eating were significantly increased (p<0.05) in obese group. These overall results suggest this program would be effective in self-weight control of overweight people. But the obese group assumed negative attitude in self-exercise program. So it is necessary to manage weight control programs, as considering obesity degree of subjects.

  • This study was performed to investigate the dietary habits, body weight satisfaction and eating disorder tendencies of female university students in Kyungnam province. Anthropometric measurements, dietary habits, body weight satisfaction, food preferences, disordered eating, and nutrient intakes were assessed in 132 female students at Kaya University. The results were analyzed with $x^2$- and ANOVA tests using the SPSS package program. The average age of the subjects was 20.1 years and average body mass index (BMI) were $21.1\;kg/m^2$. According to BMI, the percentages of students who were underweight, normal weight and overweight by BMI were 21.2, 55.3, and 23.5, respectively. Duration of exercise was significantly different by BMI. Index scores for a mini dietary assessment were significantly higher in the normal and overweight groups than in the underweight group. Scores for sweet, salty, and meat preferences were highest and scores for bean and vegetable preferences were lowest, in the underweight group. Satisfaction for present body weight was lowest, and self-perception of body image and weight control experiences were highest in the overweight group. All subjects in the overweight group wanted to be slim, and those in the normal and underweight groups, preferred to be more slim despite their current body weight being in the normal or below normal range. The percentage of the subjects who were at risk for eating disorders (based on scores from the Eating Attitude Test-26, EAT-$26{\geqq}20$) was 11.3%. Scores for EAT-26 were higher in the overweight group than in the underweight and normal weight groups. Nutrient intakes were not different among the groups. Therefore, dietary habits, taste and food preferences, satisfaction for present body weight, and disordered eating were significantly different according to BMI. These results suggest that overweight female university students need help correcting disordered eating, and nutrition counseling should be established to aid desirable weight control methods. Those who are underweight and normal weight need help establishing proper perceptions of their normal body weight and body image as well as nutrition counseling for health.

  • This study aimed to assess the prevalence of weight control behaviors and their association with food and nutrient intake among Korean adults. Study subjects were 7,340 Koreans aged 20 years and older in the 1998 Korean Health and Nutrient Survey. Cross-sectional data were collected on weight control behavior and diet using structured questionnaire by interview. Analysis of variance following after Duncan's multiple range test was used to test the differences in food and nutrient intake among three different weight control behavior groups(weight reducing attempt, weight gaining attempt, none). Current weight control behaviors were reported by 32% of the study subjects. There were significant differences in weight control behaviors between male and female subjects; weight reducing practices were 7 times greater than weight gaining practices among female subjects while it was only 1.5 times among male subjects. Weight control behaviors were not consistently associated with food and nutrient intake among male and female subjects. Moreover, greater food and nutrient intake were observed among those who trying to reducing weight than those who did not try. Therefore, it Is necessary to educate the Korean adults that balanced food and nutrient intake with sustaind weight control effort is the ideal way to achieve healthy weight.

  • The purpose of this study was to conduct a questionnaire survey for total 503 high school female students in Wonju area, Kangwon province, and thereby determine any potential effectiveness of their trials to reduce weight in their satisfaction with their own figure, daily living practices related to weight control, nutrition knowledge and dietary behaviors. Out of all respondents, it was found that 284 girl students(58.4%) ever tried to reduce weight, and both trial group(trying to reduce weight) and no-trial group were much interested in weight control(94.7% vs. 60.7%). But 85.2% of trial group and 50.3% of no-trial group were dissatisfied at their figure. It was found that the percentage of trial group practicing regular exercise was higher than that of no-trial group doing so(21.8% vs. 5.5%). Subjects scored 14.3 out of 20 on a nutrition knowledge scale, but trial group scored significantly higher points(14.5) than no-trial group(13.9)(p<0.01). In particular, it was notable that trial group showed higher rate of correct answer in certain items such as balanced diet and knowledge about weight control. It was found that our all respondents showed moderate dietary behaviors, which is demonstrated by their mean score of 31.3 in dietary behaviors(possible score: $15{\sim}45$). Notably, it was found that there were problems exposed in their dietary velocity, intake of various diets and intake frequency for each food group(dairy products, marine plants and vegetative oil and fat). And it was found that the percentage of trial group taking diet with vegetative oil was higher than that of no-trial group.
