  • In this paper, we propose a new Bit-Rate control algorithm based on bit usage matching to substitute encoded GOP(s) for new GOP(s) in MPEG-2 bitstream. It iteratively encodes current picture according to quantization value of previous picture and records bit-usage of each slice until nearly target bits are used. With target bits falling in two output bits, quantization value of slice should be changed to alleviate output bit error. We use recorded bit-usage information to decide which slices should be encoded with one quantization value and others with another. As every macroblock has different activity, we change macroblock quantization value using slice quantization value and activity value. The simulation results demonstrate that the fluctuation of the output bits can be kept within few-several tens of bits while maintaining the quality of the reconstructed pictures at a relatively stable level.

  • In this paper, we propose a new trnascoding method for improving picture's visual quality when frames are skipped. the proposed method utilizes the relationships of motion vectors between successive frames, and 4 motion vectors a macroblock are considered in transcoding. Since the proposed method does not require any decoding process of encoded bit stream, the computational complexity for estimating motion vectors can be eliminated. Experimental results illustrated that as transcoded frames are getting far from I pictures and as the degree of motions in video sequences are getting higher, the picture quality by using our proposed method shows better performances than existing schemes.

  • Compressed bitstreams generated by an MPEG-2 video encoder (or digital TV picture transmission are quite sensitive to channel errors. Due to the coding structure of the MPEG-2 video compression algorithm, a single bit error can affect not only the current Picture frame but also succeeding frames. Error concealment algorithms attempt to repair damaged portions of the picture by exploiting spatial and temporal redundancies in the correctly received and reconstructed video frames. In this paper, we analyze the effect of channel errors in MPEG-2 video bitstreams and estimate lost motion vectors by exploiting temporal redundancies in the video frames. Motion vectors can be estimated from the vertically adjacent extended region of lost macroblocks. Finally, we conceal the damaged macroblocks by compensating the displacement with the estimated motion vectors. Simulation results demonstrate that both the weighted sum algorithm and the extension matching algorithm achieve good performance in terms of PSNR values as well as subjective image quality.

  • In this paper, a new morphological details extraction algorithm is proposed. It is known that separate transmission of details and background smoothed image is a powerful technique for very low bit-rate video data transmission. Several details extraction algorithms show relatively large variation of grayscale levels in details, smoothed image, which is the difference between original and details images, provides highly distortedand complicated result. In order to remedy those pitfails, and thus to improve the coding efficiency, we propose a new algorithm using the reconstruction top-hat result as the reference image in process of obtaining details, instead of top-hat result, which is used fur existing a1gorithms. Experimental results show that details, extracted using the proposed algorithm, are much similar to original image, and thus the smoothed image is not too complicated.

  • The main feature of H.264 standard against conventional video standards is the high coding efficiency and the network friendliness. In spite of these outstanding features, it is not easy to implement H.264 codec as a real-time system due to its high requirement of memory bandwidth and intensive computation. Although the variable block size motion compensation using multiple reference frames is one of the key coding tools to bring about its main performance gain, it demands substantial computational complexity due to SAD (Sum of Absolute Difference) calculation among all possible combinations of coding modes to find the best motion vector. For speedup of motion estimation process, therefore, this paper proposes fast algorithms for both integer-pel and fractional-pel motion search. Since many conventional fast integer-pel motion estimation algorithms are not suitable for H.264 having variable motion block sizes, we propose the motion field adaptive search using the hierarchical block structure based on the diamond search applicable to variable motion block sizes. Besides, we also propose fast fractional-pel motion search using small diamond search centered by predictive motion vector based on statistical characteristic of motion vector.

  • In this paper, we proposed a multi-viewer system with multiple HD cameras based AVB(Audio Video Bridge) ethernet cable using IP networking, and FPGA(Xilinx Zynq 702) for bus safety systems. This AVB (IEEE802.1BA) system can be designed for the low latency based on FPGA, and transmit real-time with HD video and audio signals in a vehicle network. The proposed multi-viewer platform can multiplex H.264 video signals from 4 wide-angle HD cameras with existed ethernet 1Gbps. and 2-wire 100Mbps cables. The design of Zynq 702 based low latency to H.264 AVC CODEC was proposed for the minimization of time-delay in the HD video transmission of car area network, too. And the performance of PSNR(Peak Signal-to-noise-ratio) was analyzed with the reference model JM for encoding and decoding results in H.264 AVC CODEC. These PSNR values can be confirmed according the theoretical and HW result from the signal of H.264 AVC CODEC based on Zynq 702 the multi-viewer with multiple cameras. As a result, proposed AVB multi-viewer platform with multiple cameras can be used for the surveillance of audio and video around a bus for the safety due to the low latency of H.264 AVC CODEC design.

  • This paper is to propose a scalable video coding scheme for adaptive digital hologram video service for various reconstruction environments. It uses both the light source information and digital hologram at both the sending side and the receiving side. It is a resolution-scalable coding method that scales the resolution, that is, the size of the reconstructed image. The method compresses the residual data for both the digital hologram and the light source information. For the digital hologram, a lossy compression method is used, while for the light source information, a lossless compression method is used. The experimental results showed that the proposed method is superior to the existing method in the image quality at the same compression ratio. Especially it showed better performance than the existing method as the compression ratio becomes higher.

  • The 3DTV services can be seen as a general case of the multi-view video that has been receiving a significant attention lately. However, the key factors that influence the success of 3DTV are the availability of content, the ease of use, the quality of contents, and the reduction of cost. This paper deals primarily with the perceptual improvement in image quality, especially based on human factors. An optimal asymmetrical coding method for binocular and multi-view images is presented. The quantitative value of asymmetrical rate to maintain optimized subjective image quality is explored. Also we analyze how edges of 2D images affect on 3D perceptions and propose an edge-preserving algorithm to perform perceptual improvements. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm enhances subjective image quality much better than conventional methods.

  • In most conventional video codecs, such as MPEG-2 and MPEG-4, inter coding is performed with the fixed motion vector resolution. When KTA software was developed, resolution for MVs can be selected in each slice. Although KTA codec uses a variety of resolutions for ME, the selected resolution is applied over the entire pixels in the slice and the statistical property of the local area is not considered. In this paper, we propose an adaptive decision scheme for motion vector resolution which depends on region, where MV search area is divided to multiple regions according to the distance from PMV. In each region, the assigned resolution is used to estimate MV. Each region supports different resolution for ME from other regions. The efficiency of the proposed scheme is affected from threshold values to divide the search area and the entropy coding method to encode the estimated MV. Simulation results with HM3.0 which is the reference software of HEVC show that the proposed scheme provides bit rate gains of 0.9%, 0.6%, and 2.9% in Random Access, Low Delay with B picture, and Low Delay with P picture structures, respectively.

  • Block Truncation Coding, or BTC, is a type of lossy image compression technique for grayscale images. It divides the original images into blocks and then reduces the number of grey levels in each block to compute the mean and standard deviation. BTC has also been adapted to video compression. Another variation of BTC is Absolute Moment Block Truncation Coding. AMBTC is computationally simpler than BTC. In this paper, we proposed new image compression method based on BTC, which is applied patterns to improve compression rate and image quality. This method make two codebooks to extract 36 and 64 patterns from the highest frequency patterns in BTC. When you are compressing an image, you compare many block patterns to that of codebook and use to compress indexes of identical patterns. We experiment our proposed scheme with 36 patterns and the experimental results showed the compression rate of 1.37 bpp. In this paper, our proposed scheme showed higher compression rate rather than that of BTC. In experiment, we used standard images for the performance evaluation.
