  • National preference enables a nation to achieve more advantageous position regarding international relations. Considering this benefit, the purpose of this study is to explore determinants of national preference between Korean and Japanese college students. To pursue this aim, two versions (translated to Korean and Japanese) of survey were conducted in Korea and Japan in 2015. A total of 370 (206 of Koreans and 164 of Japanese) college students were participated in the survey. Specifically, participants were asked to respond perceptions toward multiculturalism, international experiences, and consumption of media contents. Further, participants were asked to describe their knowledge and perception toward cultural contents of partnered country via open-ended questions. The results implies that Japanese music and books are significant determinants among Korean students in developing national preference toward Japan whereas Koran drama is more an effective factor among Japanese students to build national preference toward Korea. Based on the result, theoretical and practical implications were discussed.

  • In this paper, we propose a deep learning architecture that can effectively detect speech segmentation in broadcast contents. We also propose a multi-scale time-dilated layer for learning the temporal changes of feature vectors. We implement several comparison models to verify the performance of proposed model and calculated the frame-by-frame F-score, precision, and recall. Both the proposed model and the comparison model are trained with the same training data, and we train the model using 32 hours of Korean broadcast data which is composed of various genres (drama, news, documentary, and so on). Our proposed model shows the best performance with F-score 91.7% in Korean broadcast data. The British and Spanish broadcast data also show the highest performance with F-score 87.9% and 92.6%. As a result, our proposed model can contribute to the improvement of performance of speech detection by learning the temporal changes of the feature vectors.

  • In the 21st century there has been an explosive gain in the popularity of Korean culture, often referred to as Hallyu, which translates into 'Korean Wave'. This is especially true in Latin America, which has seen Hallyu reach enormous heights. This study investigates the Hallyu phenomenon in Mexico and Peru over a three year period (2012-2014), with the utilization of current facts and media analysis associated with Hallyu. Mexico as a nation is an important one for this study, considering it was the first country to adopt Hallyu in Latin America and still holds a strong influence in the growth and movement of Hallyu in this region. Furthermore, in recent years, Peru has seen the most growth in popularity of Hallyu in Latin America and is therefore an essential country of study. Therefore, an in depth media analysis of the Hallyu phenomenon in Peru will offer a strong case study for further progressing and extending the rise in Korean culture in the region of Latin America. The extension of Hallyu is imperative in its contribution to the ascension of Korea's culture and national brand image.

  • Andrei Amalrik's plays are a unique phenomenon in the 70 years' history of Soviet drama. Half a century after the Soviet theater had intentionally forgotten its own achievements of avant-garde dramaturgy in the early 20th century, his bizarre plays suddenly emerged in the Soviet theater environment, completely separated from contemporary Western practices of the experimental theater. Surprisingly even now, Amalrik's plays have almost been forgotten not only in Russia but also by foreign Russian literary scholars. Amalrik's autobiographical essay is his only book published in Russia after the collapse of the Soviet regime. There is no collection of his works, and reevaluation of his work is not found even in Russia. However, Amalrik is a writer who should get a proper evaluation. The purpose behind studying his plays is to restore the tradition of Russian grotesque-absurd dramaturgy, which has been inherited from Gogol, Khlevnikov, Mayakovsky, and Oberiu. In this paper, we will analyze the mechanism of composition in Amalrik's plays.

  • This paper extracted formal characteristics appearing repetitively in Kim Ji Heon's scenario works making a study of them and examined them from the perspective of the aspects of the confrontation between the author' external environments and the world of his creation. This viewpoint comprehensively implies the two aspects of the acceptance of public needs and the creativity his scenarios have in universal characteristics of the film and scenario community where he made his debut as a scenario writer and played activities most actively. In addition, we investigated how literary features are expressed concretely in the world of his works who has been evaluated as a writer with excellent 'literary value.' His scenario world whose base is humanity and existential questions also performs a function as the reading scenario by realizing one literary perfection in itself and poetic description rather than referential function as a film script, which indicates the aspects of values his scenarios have in the existing creation practice focused on story telling, and especially, in the case of "Manchoo-Late fall" it was found that it expanded the areas of literary value through the beauty of modern form. Through this analysis it is seen that the need was exposed to reconsider problematic recognitions that he was not able to be positioned properly as a writer despite the excellent literary values of Kim Ji Heon's scenarios. This study has a meaning as a start in our research climate where the research on Korean scenario writers is not made in an earnest way but it is necessary to keep making more thorough studies including other scenarios which are not organized into the collection of works, and it is also necessary to make a comparative study with cinematized film texts in our view.

  • Today many countries consider the culture and technology industry as a high value-added industry, and make intensive investments into cultural content for its growth. In the culture and technology industry, the OSMU (One Source Multi Use) business structure, which creates content using diverse media based on one original work and thus generates a high added value, has received much attention. Recently Korea has also witnessed an increase in the cases in which the cartoon medium is converted into movies or drama. Cartoons are now put to the most use as an original source, in which the process of active secondary reproduction and recreation are taking place. In the process of recreating original works, media characteristics function as an important variable. Stories are newly reproduced by the detailed information (form) characteristics of each medium. Despite those developments, however, there are not as many active comparative studies on media-converted works as there are actual productions of them, which calls for a need to more fully activate specific comparisons of cases. By comparing and investigating original works and secondarily recreated ones through media conversion, the study made comparisons between the cartoon and movie medium and described the common and different features of the two media in terms of detailed information characteristics. In order to provide a specific case, it also analyzed the cartoon Tajja and movie Tajja through media conversion, focusing on 'conversion of narrative structure.'

  • Hallyu in Malaysia is considered to be in the growth stage as in countries such as Philippine, Myanmar, Hungary, and Uzbekistan. In the growth stage, Hallyu becomes increasingly popular and familiar to the general public and the sales of Hallyu-related products starts to increase. The purpose of this research is to compare how Hallyu is perceived among Malaysian youths and adults. Analysis is carried out using FGD. The two groups are asked about what they think of Korea and the success of Hallyu, how much interest they have in foreign cultures in general, and how they come into contact with them. Based on these results, problems currently facing Hallyu and possible solutions are examined. The analysis shows that the interest in Hallyu among Malaysians varies according to age and gender. Both male and female participants in their 20's have shown a much greater interest in Hallyu than the participants over 30's. But Malaysians are known to be relatively open-minded about accepting foreign cultures, and this is reflected in the current study. They view the popularity of Korean drama, movies, and music as a trend, rather than being intolerant of them. There is no concern for negativity toward Hallyu in Malaysia, but it is likely that Hallyu may be replaced by another foreign culture unless its influence is constantly maintained in the area. Therefore, it is essential to develop measures and models to not only retain, but strengthen Hallyu's influence.

  • User interface has been regarded as a crucial issue to increase the acceptance of mobile services. In special, even though to what extent the machine as speaker communicates with human as listener in a timely and polite manner is important, fundamental studies to come up with these issues have been very rare. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to propose a methodology of estimating politeness level in a certain context-aware setting and then to design a context-aware system for polite mobile interface. We will focus on Korean language for the polite level estimation simply because the polite interface would highly depend on cultural and linguistic characteristics. Nested Minkowski aggregation model, which amends Minkowski aggregation model, is adopted as a privacy-preserving similarity evaluation for case retrieval under distributed computing environment such as ubiquitous computing environment. To show the feasibility of the methodology proposed in this paper, simulation-based experiment with drama cases has performed to show the performance of the methodology proposed in this paper.

  • In this paper, we propose a system that can analyze appearance interval of casts by detecting and recognizing casts in broadcasting videos. The cast is one of the most important characteristics in broadcasting videos such as drama and sports. In this paper, we propose the ACAV(Automatic Cast-list Analysis in Videos) system that analyzes cast-list automatically in video. The ACAV system consists of FAGIS(FAce reGIStration) which registers detected faces into the face DB and FACOG(FAce reCOGnition) that analyses the cast-list in video sequence using the face DB. We evaluate performance of the ACAV system by comparing with FaceIt, one of the most well-known commercial systems for the cast-list analysis. The ACAV shows face detection and recognition rates of 84.3% and 75.7% that are about 30% and 27.5% higher than those of FaceIt, respectively. The ACAV system can be applied to mass broadcasting videos management system for broadcasters and video management system of PVR(Personal Video Recorder) and mobile phone for the public.

  • This study analyzes and compares the meaning and the value of storytelling with characteristics of the Playback Theatre, which is an improvisational play. On one side, the Playback Theatre, invented by Jonathan Fox in 1975, is an improvisational and communication-based theatre format; and it usually brings in the storytelling of audiences and often entails no play script. On the other side, storytelling requires imagination and creativity; presupposes the sympathy between the speaker and the listener. In fact, this theatre format is utilizing the educational and healing effects of verbal cultures, group sacrificial ceremonies, and/or psychodrama; and it is contextualizing them in our modern society. The Playback Theatre provides the audiences with opportunities to share their own stories within the play itself. The actors first listen to the stories of audiences; and then make them into a play impromptu, right in front of the speaker(s) and other audiences. For this very reason, it is called a "play-back". In this process, the individuals and the community are invited to experience the educational and healing effects.
