  • A safety relief valve is a device that relieves excessive pressure in piping lines or tanks and maintains pressure at the appropriate pressure level for use. The (pressure in the) safety valve is directly influenced by the change in the back pressure, depending on whether the vents in the spring bonnet are vented to the atmosphere or to the outlet. The back pressure is divided into the built-up back pressure and the superimposed back pressure, and the back pressure characteristics vary according to the usage conditions. The safety valve used in this study is a Conventional Safety Relief Valve. The blowdown of the safety valve is predicted by establishing the equilibrium equation between the opening force and spring force considering the back pressure characteristics. Its reliability is secured by using CFX17.1. In addition, the safety of the safety valve trim was examined through fluid-structure interaction analysis.

  • Purpose of this research is to quantitatively and qualitatively investigate the blow down wastewater produced from Yeosu Industrial Complex. Approximately, 38,325,000 tons/year of wastewater is produced, processed and finally discharged. Six representative companies, namely, A, B, C, D, E, F were chosen for this study. Each company produce over 5,000 tons/day of wastewater. In total, 6,844 tons/day of blow down water is produced from these six companies, put together. However, companies A and C produce about 24% and 37% of blow down water, respectively. It was found that the blow down water had favorable qualities, except for its high conductivity, ranging from 230 to $1,700{\mu}s/cm$. It was evident that, this water can be suitable for reuse, for industrial purposes, if a suitable treatment, for example, RO membrane process is adopted to remove high conductivity.

  • A cold gas blow-down hydraulic actuation system is widely used in missiles that require an actuation system with a fast response time under a limited space with a short operating time and large loads on the actuators. The system consists of a pneumatic part that supplies the regulated high-pressure gas to a reservoir, and a hydraulic part that supplies pressurized hydraulic oil to the actuators by the pressurized gas in the reservoir. This paper proposes a mathematical model to analyze and simulate the pneumatic part of an actuation system that supplies the operating power to the actuators. The mathematical model is based on the ideal gas equation and also considers the models for heat transfer. The model is applied to the pressure vessel and the gas part of the reservoir, and the model for the pneumatic part is established by connecting the two models for the parts. The model is validated through a comparison of the simulation results with the experimental results. The comparison shows that the suggested model could be useful in the design of the pneumatic part of a cold gas blow-down type hydraulic actuation system.

  • The dimensioning accidental loads have been selected through suitable quantitative risk assessment and generally utilized important factors for offshore facility design. The fire hazard can be quantified with dimensioning fire loads. The main purposes of fire protection are to maintain the functionality of safety systems within evacuation period and to prevent the escalation from initial fire to uncontrolled catastrophic fire. This paper introduces the applications and the design methods of active and passive fire protections as representative measures of fire protection of offshore facilities. The passive fire protection requires the high initial installation cost and much difficulty on the operation of facilities and their maintenance. The oil major clients have asked the design contractors of offshore facilities to optimize the amount of passive fire protection with relevant engineering technology recently.

  • The blow-down oxidizer feed system with self-pressurizing $N_2O$ has more advantages than the regulated system. However, it is difficult to predict the exhaust flow rate because there exist two phases in the $N_2O$ tank - liquid phase and gas phase, and the properties of $N_2O$ in storage tank are varied continuously during blow-down. In this paper, a method that can analyse simply the blow-down oxidizer feed system is studied. The properties of saturated $N_2O$ are found from the NIST data base, and mass flow through the orifice is modeled as NHNE. Cold flow test with hybrid rocket combustor is performed for the comparison where the results should found from the good agreement.

  • For accurate estimation over the change of pressure and temperature of the vessel during blowdown period, a new dynamic blowdown model was developed in this work. In particular, heat transfer from the vessel wall to discharge gas at both laminar or turbulent flow in the vessel was embedded to the model to increase the accuracy of blowdown estimation. For thermodynamics, the whole blowdown period was discretized into finite pressure decrement steps, and the step size was adjusted so that the calculation can be more efficiently carried out, while maintaining the model's accuracy. Both Peng-Robinson and Soave-Redlich-Kwong equation of states were applied to the model, and the results were compared each other. Finally, the simulation results was compared with Haque and coworkers' experimental results, and it proved high accuracy of the model.

  • This paper describes the scale effect of hybrid rocket motor which has blow-down oxidizer supply system. ResuIts show that the scale effect on regression rate is negligible using presently accessible scaling relation for $LN_2O$/PE propellant combination amid the absence of exactly proven scaling relation. It was also found that the characteristic velocity efficiency increases as motor scale increases. However, the characteristic velocity efficiency includes complicated parameters such as post-chamber configuration or geometry which can affect the entire flow field. It is therefore hard to conclude that the increase of efficiency is solely due to the enlargement of motor scale nor draw any conclusion on the scale effect which require a profound understanding of hybrid rocket scaling rules.

  • In this study, the hybrid rocket was developed that has a thrust of 1000 kgf level. The static fire test was shown that the thrust was 700 kgf level and trajectory was predicted by the maximum altitude of 12.5 km. The L/D ratio of KHyRoc-I has 28, but the KHyRoc-II were designed the small L/D ratio(18.3) using the seamless aluminium tube(Diameter : 250 mm). And KHyRoc-II has a thrust of 900 kgf level, that is designed with internal ballistics and trajectory was predicted by the maximum altitude of 7.4 km.
