This paper describes sensorless speed control of brushless DC motors by using direct torque control. Direct torque control offers fast torque response, robust specification of parameter changes, and lower hardware and processing costs compared to vector-controlled drives. In this paper, the current error compensation method is applied to the sensorless speed control of a brushless DC motor. Through this control technique, the controlled stator voltage is applied to the brushless DC motor such that the error between the stator currents in the mathematical model and the actual motor can be forced to decay to zero as time proceeds, and therefore, the motor speed approaches the setting value. This paper discusses the composition of the controller, which can carry out robust speed control without any proportional-integral (PI) controllers. The simulation results show that the control system has good dynamic speed and load responses at wide ranges of speed.

In this paper, a method of reducing torque ripples caused by phase winding inductances in BLDCM(Brushless DC Motor) drives is presented. In order to compensate the inductive current delays, commutation angle is controlled by the value compensating angle varied in accordance with rotational speed. Using the microprocessor AVR 8515, the proposed compensator is implemented and experiments are done with a 4-pole 3-phase BLDCM. The results show the remarkable reduction of torque ripple at whole speed ranges.

This power proposes a new sensorless drive system for the trapezoidal brushless DC motor generally requiring mechanical position or speed sensor. For this an indirect rotor position sensing method from the back emf waveform of non-conducting phase is explained. Back emf waveform of non-conducting is obtained from analysing terminal voltage created by making Y-connection. And an experiment is implemented with a driving system which use 87c196mc microcontroller having a peripheral associated with 3-phase signals and inverter composed of Power MOSFET. The experimental results show the validity and practicality of the proposed sensorless drive.

This paper describes an effort to develop a microcomputer-based parameter identification system for three phase and two phase brushless DC motor. Back EMF equation is derived from back EMF waveform of three phase and two phase brushless DC motor. In this paper, a new identification algorithm for the brushless DC motor parameters by Pasek's technique is developed. It is found that Pasek's equation is valid for the brushless DC motor, too. The results obtained clearly shows that it is possible to implement the identification system for the determination of the brushless DC motor parameters. To minimize errors due to the ripple component in the measured armature current, digital averaging firis employed. The whole identification process of signal generation, measuring, parameter determination is fully automated. The use of the propod method in the parameter identifition system shows that the averaged current curve is in excellent agreement with the estimated current curve. Therefore, this close agreement confirms the validity of this technique.

DC motors are used extensively on shipboard, including as the ship's winch operating motor, owing to their simple speed control and excellent output torque characteristics. Moreover, they were used as propulsion motors in the early days of electric propulsion ships. However, mechanical rectifiers, such as brushes, used in DC motors have certain disadvantages. Hence, brushless DC (BLDC) motors are increasingly being used instead. While the electrical characteristics of both types of motors are similar, BLDC motors employ electronic rectifying devices, which use semiconductor elements, instead of mechanical rectifying devices. The inverter system for driving conventional BLDC motors uses a two-phase excitation method so that the waveform of the back electromotive force becomes trapezoidal. This causes harmonics and torque ripple in the phase current switching period in which the winding wire through which the current flows is changed. Researchers have studied and presented various methods to reduce the harmonics and torque ripple. This study applies a cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter, which implements a proportional-integral speed current controller algorithm in the driving circuit of the BLDC motor for electric propulsion ships using a power analysis program. The simulation results of the modeled BLDC motor show that the driving method of the proposed BLDC motor improves the voltage waveform of the input side of the motor and remarkably reduces the harmonics and torque ripple compared with the conventional driving method.

Brushless DC motors have trapezoidal back-EMF waveform. Theoretically it should be fed with rectangular phase current in order to produce torque ripple free. Because it is drived by a voltage source inverter, perfect rectangular phase current can not available and therefore produce torque ripple. In this paper, the torque ripple due to commutation is analyzed and the practical method that can reduce the torque ripple is proposed. Experimental and simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper presents a method to reduce torque ripple of brushless DC motor by compensating phase delay due to winding inductance. For considering torque ripple comes from the phase winding inductance, torque equation of one phase is derived as Fourier series that is function of the delay. From the equation, also the resultant equation that the current delay is compensated is derived. It is validated that the compensated torque has a form of Fourier series for rectangular wave that is ideal torque, and torque ripple is reduced, consequently. Experimental method for the compensation is realized by replacing switching pattern of inverter by pattern of compensated rotor position. The effectiveness of the proposed method to reduce torque ripple has been demonstrated by the simulation and experimental results using 3 phase 4 pole brushless DC moor.
