  • If there is no choice but to be urbanized, we should examine how human interference has had influences on the area to keep the river environment safe and stable. This study is aimed at finding improvement by examining the effect of human interference in Gapcheon river in Daejeon, which is developing fast. Distinctive features of human interference in Gapcheon river are followings. First, middle and upper reaches of Gapcheon river are being maintained and restored focusing on flood control but are scheduled to develop city and channel. Second, the rear area of middle and lower reaches of Gapcheon river is already developed into an urban district and solidified into artificial stream for leisure activities installing the artificial structure for fun. Third, lower reaches of Gapcheon river are in an unstable condition because of straightening waterway and developing rear area of river. Up to now, geographical features and bio-diversity of Gapcheon river has been ruined by the artificial management of river centered for technical engineering. From now on, followings should be considered for management of urban river. First, it is focused on maintaining eco system by itself than usage for human. Second, natural features of rear area of river should be taken into consideration and should be preserved before developing urban city and hills, back marsh, channel deposit and swamp to directly have an influence on river.

  • In this study, the slope stability analysis and the landslide hazard assessment in tunnel portal slope were carried out. First, we selected highly vulnerable areas to slope failure using the slope stability analysis and analyzed the slope failure scale. According to analyses results, high vulnerable area to slope failure is located at 485~495 m above sea level. The slope is stable in a dry condition, while it becomes unstable in rainfall condition. The analysis results of slope failure scale show that the depth of slope failure is maximum 2.1 m and the length of slope failure is 18.6 m toward the dip direction of slope. Second, we developed a 3-D simulation program to analyze characteristics of runout behavior of debris flow. The developed program was applied to highly vulnerable areas to slope failure. The result of 3-D simulation shows that debris flow moves toward the central part of the valley with the movement direction of landslide from the upper part to the lower part of the slope. 3-D simulation shows that debris flow moves down to the bottom of mountain slope with a speed of 7.74 m/s and may make damage to the tunnel portal directly after 10 seconds from slope failure.

  • Kyeonggi Provincial Government is considering double decker bus service to solve the problem of heavy rush hour traffic. However, the height-to-width ratio is more than 1.16 times larger than that of a general high-speed single decker bus, and the center of gravity is higher. This could cause driving stability problems, such as turnover and breakaway from the lane, especially under strong side-wind conditions at high speed. In this numerical study, the driving characteristics of a model double decker bus were reviewed under side-wind and superelevation conditions at high driving speed. The rolling, pitching, and yawing moment of the model bus were calculated with CFD numerical simulation, and the results were compared to the recovery angular moments of the model bus to evaluate the dynamic stability under given driving conditions. As the model vehicle moves on a straight level road, it is stable under any side-wind conditions. However, on a curved road under side-wind conditions, it could reach unstable conditions dynamically. There is a chance that the bus will turn over when it moves on a curved road with a radius of gyration less than 100 m under side-wind (15 m/s). However, there is a very small chance of breakaway from the lane under any driving conditions.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the psychological state and driving safety of drivers driving around the truck platoon driving. Using the driving simulator, the experimental environment was constructed with the situation of changing lanes to the platoon and driving within the platoon. We tried to qualitatively and quantitatively analyze the driver's psychological state and driving safety through simulation driving experiments. As a result, in the case of the older driver group, there were many cases where they judged themselves to be driving safely, even though they were driving dangerously in the actual lane change to the platoon or driving within the platoon. In particular, this group showed that the narrower the distance between vehicles, the greater the misrecognition. The results of this study are expected to be useful in deriving the optimum interval when the interval between platooning of trucks needs to be temporarily extended.

  • Coastal erosion and its impact on human activities as well as the economic damage and environmental conservation of coastal area is one of major concern in the national policies. In this study, we conducted physical investigations to evaluate effects of erosion in the Geojin beach, which is located nearby the Geojin Port, for a detecting of shoreline change and beach cross-sectional area. The results showed that significant coastal erosion of the Geojin beach has occurred by the complex resources of natural factor, such as rising sea level, storm surges, high wave, and man-made construction. Especially, due to the sand supplement from Jasan river, the section which is nearby the estuary of Jasan river is maintained as a stable beach, whereas beach erosion of the other site in GW04 section has been increased indeed. Therefore, we suggest that it is need to continuous monitoring using DGPS and various surveying techniques to prevent beach erosion onto the GW04 section.

  • In recent years, utilization of underground space has been increasing in various parts of the world. In particular, open-cut method is usually applied to the shallow depth excavation. However some problems such as extreme traffic congestion and unstability of adjacent structures etc. might occur. In order to cope with these problems, the M-CAM (Modified Cellular Arch Method) method was proposed to excavate soil tunnels at shallow depth with secured enough stability and minimized construction period. In this study, sensitivity analysis was performed to predict the influence of the size of CPW(Continuous Pile Wall) and ground conditions on the behavior of the tunnel. First of all, embedded depth and diameter (or thickness) of CPW, coefficient of lateral earth pressure, and ground conditions were selected as parameters that could affect tunnel stability. Meanwhile, FLAC 2D based on finite difference method was used for numerical analysis. As a result of this study, it was checked out that embedded depth among sizes of CPW had a greatest influence on the stability of a tunnel.

  • This study identified the dynamic process of sandbar and vegetation distribution of the sandbar on the Tan-cheon River. The study area is located in the lower reaches of the Tan-cheon River that has been managed as an Ecosystem Reserve Area since 2002. For the study, the geomorphological process was analyzed through mapping analysis using a satellite image followed by analysis of the vegetation distribution through an on-site survey. The major findings were as follows : First, In the fluvial geomorphic process, various kinds of sandbars were developed in 1990s, the morphologic characteristics changing continuously. Second, In the distribution of vegetation on the sandbar, the sandbar shore was covered with bare sand substrate or intermittent annual vegetation because of the periodic fluctuation of the water-level due to intensive disturbances. Third, In the relationship between the sandbar formation and vegetation, four types of sandbars were classified: channel-shore stable bar, channel-shore unstable bar, mid-channel stable bar and mid-channel unstable bar, according to the fluvial disturbance & vegetation process. The study verifies that the vegetation distribution is reciprocally related to the geomorphological process. Accordingly, it is meaningful in the selection of plant species and the planting area of the sand bar. However, it is limited to the planting guidelines on river restoration projects. More diverse on-site experimental studies should be conducted.

  • Filtering the data for travel time records obtained from DSRC probes is essential for a better estimation of the link travel time. This study addresses the major deficiency in the performance of TRANSGUIDE in removing anomalous data. This algorithm is unable to handle unstable traffic flow conditions for certain time intervals, where fluctuations are observed. In this regard, this study proposes an algorithm that is capable of overcoming the weaknesses of TRANSGUIDE. If TRANSGUIDE fails to validate sufficient number of observations inside one time interval, another process specifies a new validity range based on the median absolute deviation (MAD), a common statistical approach. The proposed algorithm suggests the parameters, ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$, to consider the maximum allowed outlier within a one-time interval to respond to certain traffic flow conditions. The parameter estimation relies on historical data because it needs to be updated frequently. To test the proposed algorithm, the DSRC probe travel time data were collected from a multilane highway road section. Calibration of the model was performed by statistical data analysis through using cumulative relative frequency. The qualitative evaluation shows satisfactory performance. The proposed model overcomes the deficiency associated with the rapid change in travel time.

  • At the mudstone slope located on the roadside of the Seokri area in Donghae-myeon, Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do, this study was performed to analyze the effects of rainfall on the stability of slope through seepage analysis according to the precipitation type of the mudstone slope, referring to the actual case of slope failure. For this, precise geological survey, geophysical exploration and drilling survey for the slope where the failure occurred were performed and followed by analysis of detailed soil layer. For the section where failure surface located, the durability reduction of rocks was measured through slaking/swelling tests and the permeability was measured through in-situ permeability tests for each soil layer. In addition, the change of strength parameter and process of instability were analyzed by back analysis, using Talren 97 and Slope/W programs, in the slope. By applying different precipitation conditions to the geographical conditions of the slope that had actual failure records, the slope stability was analyzed by seepage analysis according to duration of rainfall and rise of groundwater level resulting from the flow of rainfall caused by development of geological structures and the slope surface condition.
