  • A combined spectrometer which could function as either the absorption spectrometer or the reflectance spectrometer was built and used for the comparison of the applicabilities of the two types of spectrometers. According to the results the sensitivity of the reflectance spectrometry was found to be useful for the quantitative analysis when the concentration of the analyte was too low or the molar absorptivity of the analyte was too small for one to perform the quantitative analysis using the absorption spectrometry.

  • Spectral reflectance data of upland crops at OSMI bands were collected and evaluated for the feasibility of crop discrimination knowledge-based on crop calendar. Effective bands and their ratio values for discriminating corn from two other legumes were defined with OSMI equivalent bands and their ratio values. For corn discrimination from two other legumes, peanut and soybean, June 22 among measurements dates was the best since all OSMI equivalent bands and their ratio values in June 22 were highly significant for corn separability. Phenological growth stage of a silage corn (rs510) could be estimated as a function of spectral reflectance in vegetative stage. Five growth stage prediction models were generated by the SAS procedures REG and STEPWISE with OSMI equivalent bands and their ratio values in vegetative stage.

  • In this paper, we evaluated the effect with respect to the light of 700-1,100 nm NIR(near infrared radiation) for spectrophotometer. Standard, red, yellow, green and blue color paper which was Munsell color paper were used for experiments. Our used light is incandescent lamp, fluorescent lamp, invert fluorescent lamp and combined lamp. Each color paper was measured 20 times. Therefore we concluded that it is possible to build a spectrophotometer for NIR(near infrared radiation) measurement we applied an spectrophotometer to measurement system in incandescent lamp.

  • Recently, forest damage has occurred often and made big issues. Among them, the damage by forest fire is not only damage of itself but also being connected with secondary damage like a flood. This is the fact that a forest fire is caused rather artificially by people than nature. In this study, we try to investigate damage of a forest fire through spectral reflectance of a plant community surveyed using a near infrared CCD camera and a SPM (Spectral Radiometer) as advanced work to use satellite image data. That is, damage of a forest fire by the naked eye observation was divided into the No damage, the light damage, the serious damage and we estimated activity of forest and grasped revival possibility of forest. Through correlation analysis between the spectral reflectance by SPM and the near infrared CCD camera, we could get high correlation in the No damage and light damage. Therefore, when we surveyed damage of a forest fire, we could grasp damage, that is hardly observed by the naked eye by, using jointly the spectral radiometer and the near infrared CCD camera.

  • Pine wilt disease has known as a serious forest disease in East Asia such as Japan, Korea and China. Fumigation and burning are considered as best way to treat infected tree at early detection. For investigate spectral reflectance characteristics of infected trees, periodic measurement has been done in both infected and non-infected trees. Infected and non-infected trees' reflectance (400 nm~2,500 nm wavelength) are detected from June to October with GER3700 spectrometer. Noise of reflectance data was corrected using cubic spline interpolation method. Reflectance was changed in most of infected trees with ranges Red (600 nm~700 nm) and Middle Infrared (1,400 nm~1,500 nm) within two months after injected by Pine Wood nematode (PWN), but there was no differences in non-infected trees. Infected and non-infected trees were compared statistically in each period. As a result, we found that a statistically significant difference was occurred at Red and Middle Infrared (MIR) 2 months after injection (p<0.05), however, no significant difference in near infrared (p>0.05). Therefore, the early detection of infested pine trees by PWN may possible through detecting the change of spectral reflectance at red and MIR.

  • We have constructed and tested a new reflectance spectrometer. Both the radiation source and the detector are embedded on the same side of the cell compartment..Its performance has been compared with that of the conventional absorption spectrometer ('Spectronic 20') using standard solutions of $Cu^{2+}$. The sen-sitivity of the reflectance spectrometer was found to be much higher than that of'Spectrortic 20' over the ana-lytical concentration range of l.00 ${\times}$$10^{-4}$M and 1.00 ${\times}$$10^{-1}$M of $Cu^{2+}$.

  • This paper proposes an illuminant estimation algorithm that estimates the spectral power distribution of an incident light source from a single image. The proposed illumination recovery procedure has two phases. First, the surface spectral reflectances are recovered in the maximum achromatic region (MAR) which is the most achromatic and highly bright region of an image after removing partially the effect of illumination using a modified gray world algorithm. Here, the surface reflectances of MAR are estimated using the principal component analysis method along with a set of given 1269 Munsell samples. Second, the Population of reflected lights is determined with 1269 Munsell samples and a set of illuminations then the spectral distribution of re(looted lights of MAR is selected from the spectral database. That is, color differences are compared between the reflected lights of the MAR and the spectral database, which is the set of reflected lights built by the given set of Munsell samples and illuminants. Then the closest colors from the spectral database are selected. Finally, the illuminant of an image can be calculated dividing the average spectral distributions of reflected lights of MAR by the average surface reflectances of the MAR. In order to evaluate the proposed algorithm, experiments with artificial scenes, which are exposed to chromatic illuminants, were performed and the spectral distribution of estimated illumination and color difference are compared with results of the conventional method.

  • In general, a color of an image is represented by using red, green, and blue channels in a RGB camera system. However, only information of three channels are limited to estimate a spectral reflectance of a real scene. Because of this, the RGB camera system can not accurately represent the color. To overcome this limitation and represent an accurate color, researches to estimate the spectral reflectance by using a multi-channel camera system are being actively proceeded. Recently, a reflectance estimation method adaptively constructing a similar training set from a traditional training set according to a camera response by using a spectral similarity was introduced. However, in this method, an accuracy of the similar training set is reduced because the spectral similarity based on an average and a maximum distances was applied. In this paper, a reflectance estimation method applied a spectral similarity based on a correlation coefficient is proposed to improve the accuracy of the similar training set. Firstly, the correlation coefficient between the similar training set and the spectral reflectance obtained by Wiener estimation method is calculated. Secondly, the similar training set is constructed from the traditional training set according to the correlation coefficient. Finally, Wiener estimation method applied the similar training set is performed to estimate the spectral reflectance. To evaluate a performance of the proposed method with previous methods, experimental results are compared. As a result, the proposed method showed the best performance.

  • Light shows various optical behaviors such as reflection, absorption, and scattering on skin for individuals. In particular, reflection of light from the skin has been widely used as the brightness index of the skin of individuals through the measurement of the physical quantity of spectral reflectance. Therefore, the study of light behavior on skin would be useful for the preparation of new evaluation method in the development stage of make-up products. In this study, multi-dimensional analysis for spectral reflectance behavior of light on individual skin was performed using Kubelka-Munk model. Also, we analyzed the contribution of skin parameters such as skin thickness and hemoglobin, which could affect the spectral reflectance, using above model and literature information. Base on this, we calculated the theoretical reflectance of normal women for visual light, which showed good agreement with the measured reflectance. Our study of light propagation in skin based on Kubelka-Munk model provides useful insight for the development of personalized cosmetic in the near future.
