The Effect of Spiritual Well-being on the Mental Health of the Cho-Sun Tribal Women Residing in P.R. of China (중국거주 조선족 여성의 영적 안녕정도가 정신건강에 미치는 영향)

  • Background: Spirituality has been an important part of Transpersonal Psychology and is believed to have a large effect on the mental health because it has been systematized. The aim of this study was to determine the level of spiritual disposition on human beings along with its effects on one's mental health. Materials and Methods: The study targeted 400 women residing in Youn-Gil city of JiLin Prov., which is a district of the Cho-Sun tribe in China. Their spiritual well-being was studied using the Spiritual Well-being Scale-Korean Version. The spiritual well-being scale consists of 2 sub-scales of religious well-being and existential well-being. The study was evaluated using a lie scale, psychotic trend, and a combined anxiety-depression scale. The results were considered to be factors of one's mental health. The correlation between the spiritual well-being and each tendency was analyzed by regression analysis. Results: The total score of the Cho-Sun tribal women according to the spiritual well-being scale was 68.29 which was much less than the 100.65 of Korean Christian women. There was no significant correlation between the spiritual well-being and the Lie trend. However, it was found that 86%(344) of Cho-Sun tribal women scored above 70 in the Lie trend with a mean score of 74.57 which is higher than normal populations. Regarding the correlation between the spiritual well-being and psychotic trend, the psychotic trend became significantly higher when the religious well-being was at a high level. On the other hand, the psychotic trend became significantly lower when the existential well-being was at a high level. Regarding the correlation between the spiritual well-being and anxiety, the anxiety was significantly higher when the religious well-being was at a high level. However, the anxiety level was significantly low when the existential well-being was at a high level. Regarding the correlation between the spiritual well-being and depression, the depression level was somewhat significantly high when the religious well-being was at a high level. However, the depression level was significantly low when the existential well-being was at a high level. Conclusion: This study evaluated the effects of spiritual well-being on a person's mental health among Cho-Sun tribal women in Youn-Gil city of JiLIn Prov., P.R. of China. The results found that the religious well-being, which is a sub-scale of spiritual well-being, had negative effects while the existential well-being had positive effects on the mental health. These results proved that a person's religious disposition had negative effects on their mental health in a communitarian society.

Effects of Positive Psychology Program for Psychological and Affectivity Well-being of Self-Support Participants (자활사업참여자의 심리적, 정서적 안녕을 위한 긍정심리프로그램의 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to verify the effectiveness of the positive psychological group program for psychological and Affectivity well-being of self-support program participants. To this end, 30 participants in the self-support program were recruited from the B-Self-Sufficiency Center in Gyeonggi Province and divided into an experimental group and a control group, and the experimental group conducted a positive psychology program once a week for a total of 8 sessions. As a result of the study, first, the positive psychology program showed a significant difference in the psychological well-being of self-support program participants. Second, the positive psychology program improved positive emotions and reduced negative emotions, resulting in significant differences in Affectivity well-being. Third, the positive psychology program helped to reduce mental pain. Fourth, in the comparison between groups, there were significant differences in psychological and Affectivity well-being. Therefore, it was proved that the positive psychology program is effective in psychological and Affectivity well-being for self-support program participants.

  • The behaviors associated with illness are different depend upon individuals even if Patients complaints same symptoms and have same disease. Understanding the patterns of those behaviors become one of the important elements in determining the diagnostic and treatment approaches and treatment compliance. The sick role plays a essencial part in abnormal illness behavior. The characteristics of abnormal illness behavior ran be applied to many parts in medicine. In case of the various kinds of functional disorders whose organic foundations are obscure and in applying the cognitive therapy, rehabilitation program and occupational therapy, the assessment and evaluation of the abnormal illness behvior is known to be beneficial. For improving the comprehensive psychiatric treatments which could be applied to the Koreans more effectively in patients with somatoform disorders and other various kinds of neurotic disorders further researches especially on the medico-historical and socio-cultural aspects of the illness behavior should be followed. And understanding the abnormal illness behavior would be helpful in enhancing the medical cost effectiveness.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of phased horticultural therapy(HT) program on the experience of psychologic therapy and the development of job and social integration in the mentally handicapped persons. In this study, the mentally handicapped persons participated in HT program were chosen in disabled person's welfare institute of Jeonnam. HT program was performed twice a week with 1 hour activity for 4 months. As a results, the mentally handicapped persons participated in HT program showed high interest of horticulture and improvement of self-respect and the high satisfactory degree of HT program. Therefore, the mentally handicapped persons were showed the experience of both physical and mental therapy, improvement of self-esteem scale and sociality in HT program. Also, the application of HT program with continuously interest will be showed high improvement of physical, psychological and sentimental. In the course of this HT program progress, horticultural therapist and social welfare officer were showed the limitation of role. Therefore the leaders of group for successful HT program be required the comprehensive plan of more efficient HT program and induced technique of continuously up-phased improvements in HT program progress.

A Study on the Effects of One's Blood Type on Determining Awarness and Emotional Character - for the Elementary Students - (혈액형과 주의력 및 행동 성향간의 관계 연구- 초등학생 대상으로 -)

  • This study is focused on the effects of one's blood type on determining awarness and emotional character of Elementary students, by comparing each individual's brain wave. Observed records are from those students who volunteered for KRIJUS(Korea Research Institute of Jungshin Science)'s brain wave measurement from September 2005 to December 2007. The whole 4010 elementary student group consists of 1562 female and 2448 male. Blood types are as follows; 873male(36%) 563female(37%) for type A, 641male(26%) 424female(27%) for type B, 622male(25%) 406female(26%) for type 0, and 312male(13%) 159female(10%) for type AB, A>B>O>AB dominately ordered. The research had shown no obvious relation between the blood types and their awarness or emotional status of elementary students. Thus, it would not be such a wise decision to tell one's character depending on his/her blood type. This result suggested that follow-up researches should be figuring out more detailed explanations for gifted education.

A Vedāntic Perspective on Philosophy for Old Age (노년 철학에 관한 베단따의 전망)

  • This article aims to examine the possibility of 'philosophy for old age' when humanity begins to reflect on old age in earnest as our country shifts to the aged society. In particular, this article aims to reframe $Ved{\bar{a}}ntic$ philosophy, i.e. a beacon of Hindu philosophy as a model of philosophy for old age, on the assumption that liberation-oriented Hindu philosophies in India can be the most suitable model to frame and apply philosophy for old age mainly at the individual level. First of all, this article identifies that liberation-oriented Hindu philosophies are nothing but a philosophy for the later part of one's life, that is, a philosophy for old age, showing that their common thoughts are very similar to the characteristics of old age. Then, it proves that three points of $Ved{\bar{a}}ntic$ philosophy, i.e. spirit supremacy, the world as an illusion, and freedom from all relations, are fully compatible with philosophy for old age. Finally, it argues that the tradition of Hindu saṃnyāsin (wonderer) embodied to the extreme in $Ved{\bar{a}}ntic$ philosophy is to establish 'old age for philosophy' beyond 'philosophy for old age.' Because $Ved{\bar{a}}ntic$ philosophy establishes saṃnyāsin of old age, which is optimized to strive for the truth as the confident subject of philosophical inquiry, so much that it exists more 'by old age' than 'for old age.' After all, according to $Ved{\bar{a}}ntic$ philosophy, as ontological and practical positivity is maximized in old age, so old age itself can be the best position to overcome not 'negativity of old age', but 'negativity of human condition' or 'negativity of life.'

Factors Associated with Personal and Social Performance Status in Patients with Bipolar Disorder (양극성 장애 환자의 개인적·사회적 기능 상태에 대한 관련 요인)

  • Objectives: Bipolar disorder is characterized by repetitive relapses that result in psychosocial dysfunctions. The functioning of bipolar disorder patients is related to the severity of symptoms, quality of sleep, drug compliance, and social support. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between sociodemographic and clinical factors and functional status in bipolar disorder patients. Methods: A total of 52 bipolar disorder patients participated in the study. The following scales were utilized: Korean version of personal and social performance scale (K-PSP), Korean version of Hamilton rating scale for depression (K-HDRS), Korean version of young mania rating scale (K-YMRS), Korean version of pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI-K), Korean version of drug attitude inventory (K-DAI), mood disorders insight scale (MDIS), and multidimensional scale of perceived social support (MSPSS). Results: The K-PSP score showed a negative relationship with K-HDRS score (r = -0.387, p = 0.005), but not with K-YMRS score (r = -0.205, p = 0.145). The K-PSP score showed a negative relationship with global PSQI-K score (r = -0.378, p = 0.005) and overall sleep quality (r = -0.353, p = 0.010). The K-PSP scores were positively associated with the KDAI score (r = 0.409, p = 0.003) and MSPSS score (r = 0.334, p = 0.015). The predictive factors for K-PSP were overall sleep quality and social support from family. Conclusion: Our study showed that depressive symptoms were related to overall function in bipolar disorder. Also, our study suggested that improving sleep quality is important in maintaining functional status. Appropriate social support and positive perception toward the drug may lead to the higher level of functioning. This study is meaningful in that the functional status of bipolar disorder patients is analyzed in a multivariate manner in relation to various variables in psychosocial aspects.

  • 이 연구는 노인들의 혈액형이 인지 기능및 행동성향과 상관 관계가 있는지를 개인이 지닌 뇌신경 생리학적 지표인 뇌파 측정을 이용하여 비교 하여보았다.. 대상자는 2008년 9월에서 2009년6월까지 한국정신과학연구소에 뇌파측정 의뢰한 노인(60세 이상)을 기준으로 선정한 자료이다. 노인 여자 311명 노인 남자명451명 총762 명이다. 노인 혈액형 분포는 A형이 남 289명(64%), 여 111명(36%), B형이 남 78명 (17%), 여 64명(20%), O형이 남 57명(13%), 여 100명(32%), AB형이 남 27영(6%), 여 36명(12%)로 A>B>O>AB형 순이었다. 분석 결과 노인들의 혈액형과 행동성향과 상관관계에서 여자노인에서는 무관하였고 남자노인에서는 유의미한 차이가 있었다. B형과 O형의 남자노인에서 부정성향이 높다고 본다. 인지기능과의 상관관계에서는 정서지수(p=.001)와 활성지수(우)(p=.040)에서 유의미한 차이를 보였다.. 정서지수에서는 A형이 가장 높았고 활성지수에서는 AB형이 가장 높았다. 이 연구 결과 몇 개의 범주에서 혈액형과 의의있는 상관 관계를 보여 주었으며 미치는 영향이나 유전적인 역할이 어떻게 영향을 주는지의 작용기전을 규명하는 연구가 필요하다고 사료된다.

Sugar and Cognitive Performance (당 섭취와 인지능력)

  • 감미료는 감각을 만족시키는 기능을 가지며, 에너지를 공급하는 영양적 감미료와 에너지를 공급하지 않는 비 영양적 감미료로 분류 될 수 있다. 영양적 감미료들은(설탕, 과당 등) 미국 식약청에서는 일반적으로 안전하다고 인식(generally recognized as safe, GRAS) 되고 있다. 그러나 감미료 섭취는 적절한 영양섭취와 건강과 관련하여 아직 많은 우려를 가지고 있다. 첨가당으로부터의 에너지 섭취가 총 에너지 섭취의 25% 이상이면 식사의 질(quality)이 낮아진다. 지난 수 십 년 간, 당 섭취가 행동적인 면에 부정적으로 작용한다는 많은 이론들이 대두되었다. 그러나 포도당은 뇌의 주요 에너지원이다. 포도당의 기억력 향상기능은 모든 연령에서 보고되었으며, 특히 젊은 층보다는 노인에서 더 효과적이었다. 특히 적당량으로 섭취하였을 때 포도당의 섭취는 단어기억, 이야기 기억, 24시간 전에 학습한 정보에 대한 기억, 경계(vigilance)의 향상, 반응시간의 단축, 정신적 계산 능력의 향상, 시뮬레이터 조절에서의 실수감소, 스투르프효과(Stroop effect)의 감소, 지능검사의 향상, 실제사건에 대한 기억력 검사와 웩슬러 척도(Wechsler Scale)에서의 향상과 같은 여러 인지능력 검사에서 좋은 영향을 미친다고 한다. 포도당 용액과 간식의 섭취는 기억력을 개선한다. 아침식사를 거르는 것은 아동들에서 낮은 학습능력을 보인다. 인지능력 변화와 관련 있는 식이는 뇌에 포도당을 공급하는 것과 관련 있다. 과당도 동물실험에서 기억력을 향상시키는 기능이 있다는 것을 보여주고 있다. 본 논문은 당 섭취가 인지능력에 미치는 영향에 대한 과학적인 연구들을 종합하여 정리한 것이다.

Childhood Trauma and Pharmacotherapy Retention among Outpatients with Panic Disorder (공황장애 외래 환자의 아동기 외상과 약물치료 유지)

  • Objectives : This study investigated lifetime experiences of trauma, treatment retention, and psychiatric symptoms among outpatients with panic disorder after initiation of pharmacotherapy. Our research hypothesis was that panic patients with childhood trauma would display more severe symptoms and less treatment retention compared to those without such history. Methods : A total of 135 first-visit outpatients with DSM-IV panic disorder were approached during the period from March 2012 to August 2016. Fifty-three patients (39%) either refused or returned incomplete questionnaires, leading to a final sample size of 82. Participants completed the Trauma History Screen, the Beck Depression Inventory, the Beck Anxiety Inventory, and the Abbreviated PTSD checklist. Results : The number of lifetime trauma was significantly correlated with treatment retention (rho=-0.269, p=0.015). Among subtypes of trauma, only childhood physical abuse was significantly correlated with treatment retention (rho=-0.298, p=0.007). Conclusions : Our results indicated that psychological trauma, particularly of an interpersonal nature from childhood, can affect pharmacotherapy treatment retention in panic disorder. This may be mediated by poor patient-doctor relationships originating from trust issues among childhood trauma survivors or lack of perceived improvement due to the more severe symptoms and unfavorable course experienced by those with childhood trauma. Further studies are needed to explore the reasons for poor treatment adherence in this population.
