  • Studies of elder abuse are increasing in our country since the 1990s. But few studies have researched how older people may perceive and give meaning to the phenomenon of elder abuse. Old people have been alienated from their own problems. Elder abuse was constructed as a social problem by experts, not by older people themselves. The purpose of this study was to explore the older people's perceptions ell the meaning of elder abuse and interventions for it, using a qualitative approach based on the grounded theory. The findings from in-depth interviews with 10 the elderly were as follows: The elderly participated in this study has been constructing the aged as independence, privacy, and carer, which conflicts the existing social construction of the aged. They also had their own definition of elder abuse. They perceived all the psycho-emotional sufferings as major elder abuse. So, they understood that elder abuse was the pervasive problem which everyone would experience. They proposed that desirable interventions for it was to guarantee and to sustain their existing independent living.

  • This paper describes the parachute dynamics modeling and simulation results for the development of training simulator of a HALO (High Altitude Low Opening) parachute, which is currently in use for military purposes. The target parachute is a rectangular shaped parafoil and its dynamic model is derived based on the real geometry data as the 9-DOF nonlinear equations of dynamics. The simulation was conducted through the moment of inertia and its aerodynamic derivatives to reflect the real characteristics based on the MATLAB/Simulink. In particular, its modeling includes the typical characteristics of the added mass and moment of inertia, which is shown in the strong effects in Lighter-Than-Air(LTA) flight vehicle. The proposed dynamic modeling was evaluated through the simulation under the spiral turning flight conditions of the asymmetric control inputs and compared with the performance index in the target parachute manual.

  • Japanese economy suffered from a great recession for one decade between 1993 and 2002, because of the bubble bursting. Recently, a similar situation broke out in the USA and spread throughout the world. This paper investigated the effects of economic policy on the Japanese depression in order to find out how the recession, caused by financial crisis, can be reasonably removed. The analysis of documentary records indicate that there exists an optimum rate in government debt and the point in time of economic policy is decisive. Statistical studies with a VAR model and a State Space Model suggest that government expenditures affect the growth rate of national product but with a short term and it has a time lag of a half year. Income tax has a grievous negative effect on the growth rate with a long term and it works without a time lag. Therefore the increasing of taxation should be put into force very carefully. However private investment is a determinate factor for the recovery of depression.

  • This study aims to develop one-stop support service for the ALS. To achieve the purpose, the cases of Korea and Japan were researched. The data used in the multiple-case study mainly referred to diaries, blogs, social networking sites, Youtube, and interviews of the disabled with ALS disease in Korea and Japan, and analyzed support services of both countries. The result of the study showed that, in the onset stage of ALS disease, a fellow counselor should be assigned by family member or person who experienced the disease from KALSA or other organizations to which a patient belongs. Also, it need a counseling by fellow counselor in the stage of softening disability. And after the gastrointestinal procedure, the number of home visits by visiting nurses should increase, and other services by OT and PT are required. In the stage of wearing a respirator, it needs to train and dispatch volunteers for ALS exclusive activities. And it is necessary to set up a family rest area or a respite service for the mentally and physically exhausted primary caregiver by long-term care. Most of all, these services should be one-stop support with linking step by step, not fragmentary support.

  • This study aims to configurate the contents of social policy strategies of European welfare states in the postindustrial society. The social policy strategy of the socialdemocratic regime consists of 'maintenance of statecentrism' and 'inclusion'. The contents of social policy strategy of the liberal regime are 'expansion of market forces' and 'increase of individual' self-responsibility'. The conservative regime adheres to the 'protection of male breadwinner; and 'income maintenance programs'. Due to these social policy strategies, the conservative regime has very high rate of unemployment. In the liberal regime, the high rate of poverty exists. In contrast, the socialdemocratic regime has low rates of unemployment and poverty and shows best social outcomes among the welfare regimes.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to attempt an alternative measurement and analysis of poverty considering income as well as time in order to present an effective antipoverty policy. Based on Korea Welfare Panel Study (2005), the income poverty, time poverty, and double poverty of household in which householders were under 60 years were measured. Moreover this paper found that households experiencing the time poverty might be faced with additional income poverty because of the necessity to purchase care services in the market to compensate for the time. As a result of the analysis, income poverty rate is 9.5%, time poverty rate is 15.7%, and time-adjusted income poverty rate is 10.8%. And low-educated single parents with young children are more likely to experienced income as well as time poverty. Therefore, this paper proved that the 'welfare to work' policy without considering situations in household could be faced with the limit. Furthermore, this paper suggests that social welfare policy should aim at minimizing the tradeoffs among different works and activities, and then support to improve the quality of life.

  • Expending on a life course perspective, this study explores the long-term and short-term reciprocity in parent-child relationships in Korean context. Since the reasons for providing filial support are believed to differ by gender, we focused on how a child's gender affects both types of reciprocity. Data were collected from middle-aged sons (N=726) and daughters (N=883) with at least one surviving parent. Logistic regression was then conducted in order to examine the relations between the support a child currently provides to parents and the current or previous support received from the parents. Dependent variables are financial and instrumental support that middle-aged child currently provide to the parents. The financial and instrumental support a child received from the parents within a year are included in the model as an independent variable to assess short-term reciprocity. The level of financial support a child has received during the transition to adulthood process is included in the model as a independent variable to explore long-term reciprocity. Result supports the existence of gender differences in the long-term reciprocity. Daughters provided instrumental support in response to the financial support that they had received from parents during the transition to adulthood process. However, for sons, this tendency was not found. When it comes to financial support, long-term reciprocity was observed neither for the sons nor for the daughters. Both sons and daughters are prone to provide financial support to the aged parents regardless of the level of financial support they had received during the transition to adulthood process. Short-term reciprocity was found both in sons and daughters. when they have been receiving a financial or an instrumental support from the aged parents within a year, they tend to provided instrumental support to the parents. This study shows that the aged parents still fulfill the reciprocal relationship to a certain degree. Secondly, we can conclude that the norm of reciprocity interplays with the norm of filial responsibility in contemporary Korea.

  • This research examines the degree and the patterns of living arrangement transitions and analyzes the factors affecting transitions in living arrangement among elders in Korea. Data came from four-wave panel study of Hallym Aging Research Institute. The first wave was conducted in 2003, and each successive wave occurred exactly 2 years after. Respondents who were aged 60 and over, and had at least one living child were selected for this research. The baseline consisted of 1,907 respondents(2003), then became 985 for the fourth transition interval (2009). A total of 825 who participated both in 2003 and 2009 were used. Binomial logit regression analyses were used to analyze the effects of demographic characteristics, socioeconomic status, physical health, cognitive function, psychological well-being, and cultural attitudes toward elder care on transitions in living arrangements. Results show that 29.82% of the elders made transitions in living arrangements from 2003 to 2009, indicating remarkably unstable living situation over this time period. The ratio of living alone is increased from 17.6% to 19.6%, in contrast with decreased ratio of living with married children from 30.5% to 25.2%, and that of living with unmarried children from 19.9% to 13.7%. Factors affecting transitions in living arrangement were different according to types of living arrangement. Elders living with married children were more likely to be older, widowed and to have higher level of psychological well-being and more traditional attitude toward elder care. Elders living alone were more likely to be women, widowed, and to have more chronic diseases and lower level of psychological well-being.

  • The study had four purposes as follows; First, the researcher tried to find the characteristics of conflict. Second, the researcher attempted to find the factors influencing the conflict between mother and the eldest son, Third, the study attempted to find the therapist's intervention techniques, which were caused the change of the conflict between mother and the eldest son. Lastly, the study was to find the changed contents of family relationships. The total family counseling was 13 sessions, which included individual and family counseling. The study used constant comparative analysis by using open coding method to find the factors. Also, the researcher used Miles and Huberman's matrix and graphical network display to show the relationships among factors influencing the conflicts between mother and the eldest son. The study found the boundary problem of family, family's undifferentiated ego, dysfunctional communication patterns, and mother's experience from family of origin as factors influencing the conflict between mother and the eldest son. On the other hand, the study found that the therapist used the formation of therapeutic alliance relationship, guide of communication skills, the reflection of repeated pattern, reframing and a metaphor as intervention methods. The result of study revealed that changed level of family relationship, activating functional communication, changed boundary among family members, differentiated ego of family members, and changed cognition as the changed contents of family relationship.

  • As the ARRA enacted recently in the United States, the interest in EHR systems have been increased in the field of medical industry. The passage of the ARRA presents a program that provides incentives to office-based physicians and hospitals adapting the EHR systems to guarantee interoperability with various medical standards. Thanks to the incentive program, a great number of EHR systems have been developed and lots of office-based physicians and hospitals have adapted the EHR systems certified by CCHIT. Keeping pace with the rapid changes in the market of healthcare, some enterprises try to push in to the United States healthcare market based on the experience acquired by developing EHR systems for hospitals in Korea. However, the developed system must be customized because of the different medical environment between Korea and the United States. In this paper, therefore, we design and develop an integrated EHR platform to guarantee the interoperability between different medical information systems based on medical standard technologies. In the developed platform, an integrated system has been composed by integrating various basic techniques such as data transmission standards and its methods, medical standard terminologies and its usage, and knowledge management for medical decision-making support. Moreover, medical data can be processed electronically by adapting an HL7 interface engine and the terminologies for exchanging medical information and the standardization of medical information. We develop SeniCare, an EHR system for supporting ambulatory care of the office-based physicians, based on the platform, and we verify the usability of the platform by confirming whether SeniCare satisfies the criteria of "meaningful use" issued by CMS or not.
