  • The Helicopter MRA Control Rod System has the important function of controlling the speed, height, and direction of helicoptersby adjusting the main rotor disc. However, the ingress of water into the inner control rod can cause ice damage in the rod during winter operation and also corrosion;these defects need to be rectified. The water flowed into the control rod through the upper side space, and the rod was cracked during icing expansion occurring at low temperature. The corrosion occurred due to the lack of coating process during the manufacturing process. To resolve these problems, the upper rod was sealed to prevent water inflow and a coating process was added to prevent corrosion. These solutions were verified by awaterproof test and a salt fog test. The phenomena, causes and measures were reviewed and the methods of improvement were established and proven. This proposed technology to prevent water infiltration and corrosion will contribute to the safety of rotary wing aircraft.

  • This study aims to extract manufacturing techniques by analysing metallurgical characteristics of the cast-iron pot from Bubjusa, examining corrosion status and microstructure with a optical microscope, SEM-EDS, micro vickers hardness tester and XRD. The microstructure analysis has presented that ferrite and partial portion of pearlite exist within the corroded outer layer. The analysis of the inner layer revealed that there is pearlite and graphite of feather shape. The one of the middle layer, which is placed between outer and inner layer, showed that corrosion has been heavily developed. Micro vickers hardness values range from 217Hv to 698Hv in constituent layers and such values lie within the ranges of the ancient iron relics. The result of EDS analysis for each microstructure presented that the outer layer has been more decarbonized than the inner layer. XRD analysis of iron corrosion compound revealed that Goethite and Hematite had been produced from the corrosive process of iron. The study concludes that the large iron pot was made by casting technique, and microstructure of inner layer had a gray cast iron. Outer layer has been decarbonized through repetitive process of heating and cooling. This results can be used as fundamental data for comparative study to reveal manufacturing techniques of large cast-iron pot.

  • Corrosion of rebars can occur if there are cracks, moisture and availability of oxygen or carbonation proceeds, chloride penetrates and diffuses in concrete. Once rebars in concrete corrodes, subsequently accompanied with scaling, spalling in concrete cover. As a result of them, the RC structure is seriously deteriorated. In this study, theoretical review and experiments for cathodic protection(CP) have been performed to control corrosion of rebars in concrete contained chlorides and pre-crack. For CP the impressed current system was applied, the protection effect was investigated when rebars was directly contacted with salt water due to crack and open to much chlorides in concrete. In order to investigate the effect of protection, when CP was energized for 1 year, half-cell potential, potential-decay with current density, corrosion ratio, etc. were measured. With the cathodic protection by impressed current system, the depolarized values of all specimen were met NACE Standard, the effect of 34~84% of the ratio of corrosion area and 84~86% of cross-section reduction were calculated.

  • Factors to cause accidents were investigated through a systematic analysis of leakage accidents in welded LP-gas cylinder between 199 and 1999. As a result It was showed that most of leakage accident occurred at the pin-hole due to the localized corrosion on welded zone in cylinder. Accordingly, in this paper, we suggested that the problems of heat treatment condition in two-piece welded cylinder and substitute proposal for preventing the tearing of T zone in three-piece welded cylinder. Furthermore, corrosion rate on the weldment and base metal of welded LP-gas cylinder was evaluated using the electrochemical tests in acid rain and $3.5\%NaCl$ solution, Also, the poor adhesion and defects of film which was produced by electrostatic powder spray painting, while the LP-gas cylinder was manufactured, were analyzed using SEM(Scanning Electron Microscopy). And we proposed a optimum coating thickness of the cylinder.

  • Small water leak experiment was carried out for the 5Cr-1Mo steel specimen in sodium atmosphere. Perfect re-open time for the leak path of a specimen, by micro leak, was 129 minutes, and its size observed about 2 mm diameter at sodium side. The halos phenomena appeared around of leak spot before the leak path has re-opened, and the size of halos observed was different from the real re-open size of a specimen. Also, the corrosion of a specimen initiated from sodium side, but it did not occur at steam side. In AES analysis, the segregation phenomena of Cr in the specimen was found much more than those of other elements. And also, the sodium compounds formed by sodium-water reaction and deposited onto the leak site of specimen were observed by EPMA analysis and SEM photograph. It is postulated that the corrosion products could be precipitated to form mixed Na Fe Cr compounds.

  • A woodblock softening process using saltwater was investigated in order to reduce the cracks and distortion caused by the woodblock-making process and to make the woodblock softer and sculpturing easier. Although anatomical studies of woodblocks have been ongoing for years, little work has been done on softening treatments using natural materials. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the change in the physical properties of wood treated with saturated brine and the effect of salt on metal nails found embedded in woodblocks. After boiling for twelve h each in water and saturated brine, the saltwater-boiled specimens have longer drying times than the water-boiled specimens. Further, it was observed that salt particles penetrated the cells in the wood. As a result of exposing the copper and iron nails, which were stuck in each specimen, to a high humidity environment, the weight of the saltwater-boiled specimens increased due to the hygroscopicity of the salt. Corrosion of the nails also occurred. This result is similar to the problem that appears on the edge of a woodblock. In conclusion, it was shown that salt in the wood cells affects the corrosion of metal embedded in the wood.

  • The study was performed to study the effects of strain rate on acoustics emission( AE) during bulging test in corrosive environmentsynthetic sea water. The strain rates used were in the range $4 \times 10^{-6}S^{-1}$ to $1 \times 10^{-4} \times S^{-1}$ and the parameters used to evaluate AE signal characteristics were AE hit and amplitude. It can be observed that the cumulative AE hit and average amplitude during fracture process increase highly at decreasing strain rates while the equivalent fracture strain and the crack length of circumferencial direction become decrease. The peak point of AE signal characteristic parameters approach to the first half of test. When the average amplitude per unit equivalent fracture strain was above 20dB, it was definitly observed stress corrosion cracking phenomena. Additional, we knew that the AE test had the possibility to evaluate SCC susceptibility with various strain rates.

  • A laser ultrasonic inspection system is a non-contact inspection device which generates and measures ultrasonics by using laser beam. A laser ultrasonic inspection system provides a high measurement resolution because the ultrasonic signal generated by a pulse laser beam has a wide-band spectrum and the ultrasonic signal is measured from a small focused spot of a measuring laser beam. In this study, galvanic corrosion phenomenon was measured by non-destructive and non-contact method using the laser. The case of mixed foreign material on the part of corrosion was assumed and laser ultrasonic experiment was conducted. Ultrasonic was generated by pulse laser from the back side of the specimen and ultrasonic signal was acquired from the same location of the front side using continuous wave laser and Confocal Fabry-Perot Interferometer(CFPI). The characteristic of the ultrasonic signal of exist foreign material part was analyzed and the location and size of foreign material was measured.

  • Chemical degradation of aqueous humic acid by ozonation was studied with respect to the direct reactions of ozone and the indirect reactions due to its preliminary decomposition to secondary oxidant, OH radical. This was characterized by analyzing TOC, $UV_{254}$ and ozone consumption measured in different experimental conditions in which ozone reacted in the presence of various concentrations of $H_2O_2$ and $HCO_3{^-}$ concentrations ranging from 20 to 100 mg/L. and different pH (5-9). The results suggest that the TOC removal is mainly dependent on indirect reactions of OH radical whereas $UV_{254}$ reduction is mainly dependent on direct reactions of ozone with humic acid molecules. It has been also found that ozone consumption was most likely to be affected by pH and alkalinity in the solution.
