A Study on Durability of Competitiveness through Creating Competitive Advantage - Case of Busan Port - (지속적인 경쟁우위 창출을 통한 경쟁력의 지속성 확보방안 -부산항 사례 연구-)

  • Amidst dynamic business environment, creating competitive advantage, source of competitiveness, is a critical issue for international port operations. To overcome limitations of prior studies adopted cross-sectional approach, this study reviews a way to continually sustain and create competitive advantage, based on the case of Busan port in South Korea. Development plans, operations and management practices from2005 to 2014 were investigated and reviewed. Results revealed that enhancement of infrastructure, new engine to sustainable growth, green and safety, and partnership enhancement were a source of creating competitive advantage. The results help theoretical advances on competitiveness and its durability, and provide useful insights for creating competitive advantages and future improvement in international port operations.

An Empirical Study on Causality among Trading Volume of Busan, Kawangyang and Incheon port (부산항, 광양항, 인천항의 물동량간 인과관계 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the causuality among export and import trading volume of port of Busan, Kwangyang, Incheon and to induce policy implications. In order to test whether time series data is stationary and the model is fitness or not, we put in operation unit root test, cointegration test. And We apply Granger causality and impulse response and variance decomposition based on VECM. The results indicate that the trading volume of port of Busan is not largely influenced by that of port of Kawangyang and Incheon, but the trading volume of port of Kawangyang and Incheon is largely influenced by other ports including port of Busan. The result suggest that government has to focus on policy that the port of Kawangyang and Incheon can raise its own competitiveness in the world market.

  • In order to be a hub-port in Northeast Asia, current China government has intensively invested in port development. Further, this development Project is significantly big scale, compared with those projects which Korea and Japan have. Thus, China is beginning to threaten Korean ports, especially Busan port which try to be a hub port in Northeast Asia. For this reason, recently many studies to evaluate competitiveness between Korean ports, especially Busan and Gwangyang, and Chinese ports have been conducted. In the mean time, implications of those pervious research has mainly been based on evaluation of port competitiveness using evaluation methodologies, such as AHP(Analytical Hierarchy Process) and HFP(Hierarchical Fuzzy Process). However, as previous evaluation algorithms are methodologies that only calculate ranking of ports by competitiveness level, from the results of analysis, critical weak points affected current port competitiveness could not clearly fine out. That is, because there has not been any algorithm that can extract critical points from the evaluation results. The aim of this paper is to present critical points that affect port competitiveness using an algorithm based on IRFE(Inverse Relation of Fuzzy Evaluation), and scenario analysis, from previous results of evaluation of port competitiveness. And The research scope is to covey the subjective ports of Korea and China's 7 major ports (Busan, Gwangyang, Sanghai, Qingdao, Tienjin, Dalian and Kaoshuing). From analysis, it was found that critical weak point of Busan port is the level of hinterland including availability of free trade zone.

A Study on the Busan Port Selection Factor Changes of Shipping Companies in the Post-Corona Era (포스트 코로나 시대 선사들의 부산항 선택요인 변화분석)

  • The industry trends of major global shipping and ports in the world are changing rapidly because of the spread of COVID-19, resulting in the reorganization of GVCs by global companies, and strengthening of environmental regulations by IMO. Based on these environmental changes, Busan Port was ranked 5th in the global container port rankings in 2013. However, since the outbreak of COVID-19, Busan Port's global container port ranking in 2020 fell to 7th, behind Qingdao Port. In the post-Corona era, for Busan Port to compete with global container ports and gain a competitive edge in the port, it is necessary to accurately identify the competitive factors of Busan Port and establish a comprehensive policy. Thus, the purpose of this study was to analyze how the competitive factors of Busan Port have changed in the selection of ports by current global shipping companies, compared to the first study conducted in 2005. Additionally, a comprehensive policy plan was established by identifying factors impacting the frequency of future calls as well as the growth potential of Busan Port, through a stepwise multiple regression analysis. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the call preference and growth potential of Busan Port in the post-Corona era are most affected by 'port facilities'. And it was found that the calls frequency in the future is most impacted by 'the geopolitical location' factor.

  • Due to the rapid growth of Chinese ports, currently, research for the improvement of competitiveness of Busan port have been intensively studied. These research have mostly evaluated or analyzed competitiveness of ports, and then, based on results of analysis, have suggested some strategies for enhancing competitiveness of Busan port. However. although implications of these previous studies are practically available to build policies for Busan port, basic studies such as identification of port competitiveness( or port selection) related factors for reasonable evaluation and analysis which have contributions in academic area have been very rare. A Study to activate and evaluate competitive advantage on Free Trade Zone of Busan Port (부산항 관세자유지역의 경쟁력 평가 및 활성화 방안에 관한 연구)

  • As the environment for international logistics varies according to the globalization in world economy, world-class seaports are struggling for the position as strongholds in their own block. As a new government begins its own era in Korea, they are positively implementing their strategies at the level of government for making the Korean Peninsula the logistics centre in North-eastern Asia, marking the most of its geographic advantage. As one of those strategies, it plans to foster a specific area as an international logistics base camp in Northeast Asia by activating its logistics industry through inducing multinational logistics enterprises. In reality, however, in order for Busan seaport, the late-comer, to induce investment from the world-class multinational companies, a considerably large volume of investment should be given from both central and local governments. Accordingly, the objective of this study is to assess its competitiveness and to suggest an activation plan for BSDFA(Busan Seaport Duty-Free Area), based upon the results of on-the-spot interviews in China and Japan. The survey for the respondent's preference by way of Conjoint Analysis indicated that Investment procedures and limitations get the highest 36.2% preference, so the most critical strategy to be considered for attracting enterprises into DFA(Duty-Free Area) is to solve the problems related to the investment procedures and limitations. The simulation analysis results for market share showed that UAE has the highest preference and BSDFA the lowest preference among the five countries. However, when the levels of investment procedures and limitations and production costare upgraded, the competitiveness of BSDFA was elevated next to that of UAE among the 5 countries. Thus, in order for BSDFA to obtain competitiveness, it is implied that production cost level as well as investment procedures and limitations level, should be lowered so that it could meet companies' demand.

Decomposition of Daesan Port's Exports: Neighbor Spatial Effect (대산항 수출변동의 요인별 분해: 근린공간효과를 중심으로)

  • The standard shift-share analysis decomposes a region's sectoral growth into three components: national, industry-mix, and regional-shift effects. Nevertheless, the three components of the traditional shift-share are not related to the behavior of the regional economies that are neighbors of the region under analysis. We incorporate a spatial structure within this basic formulation, and consider spatial interaction in the decomposition analysis. Daesan Port's export grew steadily at an annualized average rate of 4.0% during 2011-2017, and its rank, in terms of export performance, was 13 in 2010; this rose to 6 in 2016, then declined slightly to 7 in 2017 before reaching 6 as of June, 2018. However, not all ports have a similar growth path. The Onsan Port's share declined from 27.4% in 2011 to 21.0% to 2017, whereas the share of petroleum product exports of Daesan Port increased rapidly, from approximately 8.5% in 2011 to 16.0% in 2017. The standard shift-share analysis shows that petroleum products and basic petrochemicals have a positive regional in dustry-mix effect, but petrochemistry materials and synthetic resins have a negative sign, indicating that the former's exports grow faster than national export, while the increase of the latter's export is slower than national one. The spatial shift-share model indicates that for both petroleum products and basic petrochemicals, Incheon and Ulsan Ports have a positive value for the neighbor-nation regional shift effect and a positive value for the region-neighbor regional shift effect. This paper also shows that Yeosu Port for petroleum products; Ulsan Port for basic petrochemicals; Ulsan, Onsan and Yeosu Ports for petrochemistry materials; and Ulsan, Busan, and Incheon Ports for synthetic resins have a positive value for the neighbor-nation regional shift effect but a negative value for the region-neighbor regional shift effect.

An Improvement of Backhaul Transport with the Mathematical Model of Inter-Terminal Transportation Using Buffer Space (완충지역을 활용한 타부두 환적 컨테이너 운송 모형의 복화율 개선 효과 분석)

  • Busan Port is operated separately by a number of terminal operators, resulting in a large number of ITT (Inter-Terminal Transportation) volumes. The occurrence of ITT volume causes various problems such as additional transportation cost, empty truck trips, truck delays and terminal congestion, weakening Busan Port's competitiveness. Among them, the empty truck trip problem is a representative factor, that exacerbates the cost problem of the ITT operation at Busan Port. But the ITT backhaul rate at Busan Port remains low. To strengthen the transhipment competitiveness of Busan Port, it is necessary to increase the ITT backhaul rate. In this paper, to improve ITT backhaul rate, we present a mathematical model for maximizing backhaul transport using buffer space. And we analyzed the improving effects of backhaul transport using buffer space through experiments based on actual operating data.

An Application of FCM(Fuzzy C-Means) for Clustering of Asian Ports Competitiveness Level and Status of Busan Port (FCM법을 이용한 아시아 항만의 경쟁력 수준 분류와 부산항의 위상)

  • Due to the changes of shipping and logistic environment, Asian ports today face severe competition. To be a mega-hub port, Asian ports have achieved a big scale development. For these reasons, it has been widely recognized as an important study to analyze and evaluate characteristics of Asian ports, from the standpoint of Korea where Busan Port is located. Although some previous studies have been reported, most of them have been beyond the scope of Asian ports and analyzed the world's major ports; moreover, the studied ports have been about the ports which are well known from the previous research and reports. So, most studies is unlikely to be used as substantial indicators from the perspective of Busan Port. In addition. most of the existing studies have used hierarchical evaluation algorithm for port ranking, such as AHP (analytical hierarchy process) and clustering analysis. However, these two methods have fundamental weaknesses from the algorithm perspective. The aim of this study is to classify major Asian ports based on competitiveness level. Especially. in order to overcome serious problem of the existing studies, major Asian ports were analyzed by using objective indicators. and Fuzzy C-Means algorithm, which alleviates the weakness of the clustering method. It was found that 10 ports of 16 major Asian ports have their own phases and were classified into 4 port groups. This result implies that some ports have higher potential as ports to lead some zones in Asia. Based on those results. present status and future direction of Busan port were discussed as well.
