Experiences of Korean Homestay Guardians of Early Study Abroad Students in the U.S. (미국 한인 조기유학생 홈스테이 가디언의 경험)

  • The aim of this study was to determine key experiences of homestay guardians of unaccompanied minor Korean adolescents studying abroad in the United States through qualitative research method of grounded theory methodology. This study identified guardianship experiences and the process of adjustment to life with homestay students through in-depth interviews with 12 subjects who are Korean guardians in the United States. The results of this study classified "started with concern" as a category that leads guardians to start providing homestay accommodation, and "other's recommendation," "need for financial support," and "unexpectedly" as subcategories. This study identified "act as a mediator to resolve differences" as a key experience of guardians, and classified subcategories are "parental role" and "calculation of gains and losses" on a personal level; and "feel sorry for own children," "limited leeway of the family," and "formation of relationship between own children and homestay students" on a family level. Developed subcategories are "thirsty for attention," "vulnerability," "task on freedom and control," and "regrettable feeling in the absence of communication" with respect to relationship with students; "grade expectations," "one-way communication," "trapped between parents' and students' demands" in regard to relationship with parents; and "advice from school" in the aspect of school. "Cultural difference," "preparedness of students and parents," "age differences between guardian's children and students," "family support," "similar personalities," "guardian's motivation," and "parent's attitude" are subcategories that affect central phenomenon of guardians.

Indigenous psychological analysis of elderly parents care among adolescents and their parents (청소년과 부모 세대의 노부모 부양인식에 대한 토착심리 탐구)

  • The main purpose of this research is to investigate the qualitative nature of Korean adolescents and their parent's perception of elderly parents care. In addition, this research exams the quantitative differences between the two generations in term of their elderly parents care self-efficacy and attitude towards caring for their elderly parents. Further, an examination of the parental influence upon their children's elderly parents care self-efficacy and attitude towards caring for their elderly parents. There were 2,460 participants in this study, with 820 adolescents, and 820 fathers and 820 mothers. The results of the study were as follows: First, in terms the participants perceptions of "the most difficult aspect of caring for elderly parents", the most representative response for adolescents was financial difficulties, while for parents differences in opinions. When it came to "the best aspect of caring for elderly parents" the most representative response for adolescents was harmonious family, while for parents good for children's upbringing. When it came to "actual acts (behavior) of elderly parents care" the most representative response for adolescents was living together with their elderly parents, while for parents looking after their elderly parents. When it came to "the best method of caring for their elderly parents" the most representative response for both adolescents and parents was providing a peace-of-mind for their elderly parents, followed by the second most frequent response of adolescents living together with their elderly parents, and for parents talking with their elderly parents. When it came to "how one feels when not caring for their elderly parents" the most representative response for both groups was a feeling of indebtedness. Second, for the quantitative analyses of the differences between the two generations, the parents showed a lower level of elderly parents care self-efficacy and a higher level of negative attitude towards caring for their elderly parents, when compared to the adolescents. Third, for the parental influence upon the adolescents' elderly parents care self-efficacy and attitude towards caring for their elderly parents, the only significant influence found was the mothers' elderly parents care self-efficacy.

Validity of Imago Couple Therapy's Contents and Effects of Application of the Imago Couple Therapy (이마고 부부치료 모델 내용의 타당성과 적용 효과성 연구)

  • This study focused on the validity of Imago couple therapy's contents and the effects of application of the Imago couple therapy model. The participated subjects were 38 graduate students and their spouses. The major findings of this study were as follows. First, the types of couple relations that formed and sustained marital relations after growth could be predicted by the early childhood relationships between the subjects when they were children and their parents. Second, the marital conflicts and frustrations could be healed by the 'parent-child dialogue' and 'guided imagery'. Third, Imago couple therapy was effective for couple counseling to improve the areas of marital relationships, especially marital intimacy, marital communication, communication skills for marital conflicts, mutual respect, gender role, sexual satisfaction, time together, and decision-making. Fourth, Couple's Dialogue was a powerful tool for couple and parent-child relationships as well as general counseling practices.

The effect of dialogic reading program on verbal behaviors in mothers of children with developmental language delays (대화식 책읽기 부모교육 프로그램이 언어발달지체 아동 어머니의 책읽기 상호작용 행동에 미치는 영향)

  • Dialogic reading program is designed to involve children actively during shared reading and to provide a rich avenue for language development. The present study is to examine the effects of the modified dialogic reading program on parent-child interactions in parents of children with developmental language delays. six children with developmental language delays and their parents were participated. This 4 week program was composed of three group sessions and one individual feedback session. Parent-child interactions were videotaped before and after the program. As a result, all six parents showed increase in positive behaviors during the interaction after completing the program. And negative behaviors were partly decreased. These results were discussed in conclusions.

A study on the positive psychological capital of adolescents: Focusing on parent-adolescent conversation time and open communication (청소년의 긍정심리자본에 관한 연구: 부모-자녀 대화시간과 개방적 의사소통을 중심으로)

  • This study examined the influences of demographic variables, parent-adolescent conversation time, and open communication on the positive psychological capital of adolescents. The data were collected from 243 middle school students living in Gwangju from December 23, 2019, to January 3, 2020. Data were analyzed using correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis. The results can be summarized as follows. First, with economic condition, academic achievement, parent-adolescent conversation time, and open communication, positive psychological capital showed significant difference statistically. Second, father-adolescent open communication best explained positive psychological capital, followed by academic achievement, and mother-adolescent open communication. The results highlight the important roles played by parent-adolescent open communication and academic achievement in improving adolescents'positive psychological capital. The study contributes to the literature by providing fundamental insights into adolescents'positive psychological capital.

Healthy Family Educational Need and Life Satisfaction of Middle School Students and Their Parents (중학생과 학부모의 청소년을 위한 건강가정 교육에 관한 요구도와 생활 만족도)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify healthy family educational need and life satisfaction of middle school students and their parents. The data for the analysis were collected from 674 middle school students and 597 their parents living in Seoul using the structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA with Duncan test, and Pearson' correlation analysis were used to examine the data. The results indicated that the need for healthy family education of the middle school students was high. The students were interested in consumer economics and friend relationship, whereas their parents were interested in consumer economics and family relationship. Some of the demographic variables, such as gender, living area, and the amount of allowance, were the variables affecting the educational needs of students. There were relatively high correlation between healthy family educational need and life satisfaction, so educators should provide the healthy family education program to improve students' life satisfaction.

A Study on Pre-service Early Childhood Teachers' Perception of Bullying (예비유아교사의 따돌림 인식에 대한 연구)

  • This study examined to offer practical implications for the bullying for the prevention and response in early childhood education at the scene of the bullying that occur by to confirm the perception of the bullying to pre-service early childhood teachers. The survey questionnaire was completed by 313 pre-service early childhood teachers. SPSS Win program was used to perform frequency analysis, ANOVA. (1)The perception of bullying were significantly different according to grade and experience of child care practice, classroom observation, education program for taking preventive measure. (2)Teachers' perception about the action that can be seen as bullying followed by 'apply the violence, such as kicking, or were frequent', 'shared in things that often prevents','often to another carrier or shame in front of a friend'. (3)Perception about characteristics of bullying Perpetrators was 'aggressive behavior and talk much' and perception about characteristics of bullying victims was 'shy and not much'. (4)The reason of bullying perpetrators was 'Just for fun without a special reason' and the cause of bullying victims was 'problem of parents' child-rearing attitudes and home environment'. (5)Important institutions to combat bullying prevention followed by teacher, parents and family, community and the nation, preschool educational institution. Teachers guidance content of combat and prevent bullying was 'to be isolated from the class to infants continue to monitor'. Parents guidance content of combat and prevent bullying was 'communicate a lot and attention to children'. Early childhood education institutions guidance content of combat and prevent bullying was 'operations to come up with the bullying prevention education in educational time'. This study indicated that it is necessary to make efforts for increasing perception of bullying in pre-service early childhood teachers.

A Study on Cognition and Policy of Shutdown System of Adolescent (셧다운제도에 대한 청소년의 인식과 정책에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, the side effects from the online game is appearing to adolescent to serious level. This research studied the system to protect adolescent from excessive game usage, the system to limit an online game service connection at the midnight time. Namely we found at a shutdown system introduction of adolescent out about cognition, problems with the game poisoning and effects with shutdown system and alternative policy. The investigation results were as follows. First, only 17.5% of adolescent knew a shutdown system. Second, they were recognizing about the game poisoning seriously. Also the half degree thought them efficiently about a shutdown system introduction. The policy about a shutdown system introduction were as follows. First, public education is activate, and we must keep adolescent from exposing to private education in the entrance examine competition. Second, we need the thing to increase the conversation time of the children with put parents to develop desirable family education program. Lastly, the supply must be achieved with leisure culture contents development of adolescent.

The Relationship between Husband Support and Depression in Korean Married Women: The Mediating Effects of Connubial Bliss (기혼 여성의 남편지지와 우울과의 관련성 : 결혼행복감을 매개로)

  • The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is the relationship between husband support and depression mediated to connubial bliss in Korean married women. A total of 2,120 married women were selected from the database of the Fourth Korea Longitudinal Survey of Women and Families (KLoWF) in 2011-2012. By the structure equation model, among of the husband support, the husband awareness was regarded as the dominant factor related to depression in Korean married women. Then comes couple activity, visiting of parents and division of household labor in that order. This study suggests that husband support significantly associated with connubial bliss and depression in Korean married women. The above findings will help design policy plans to reduce the depression of married women in the nation.

Predictors of Positive Changes in Children with Divorced Parents: Focused on Moderating Effects of Family Incomes (이혼 가정 자녀의 긍정적 변화에 영향을 미치는 변인 분석: 가구 소득의 조절효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore predictors of positive changes in children with divorced parents and to demonstrate the structural path among the perceived experience of social discrimination, parenting difficulties, parent-child communication, and internet use of children that related to positive changes based on family incomes. The subjects for this study were 1,114 single parents from divorced families sourced from a study on the status of single-parent families in 2015. The results of this study by using the structural equation model of the moderating effect verification with family incomes and multi group analysis are as follows. First, single-parent's perceived experience of social discrimination turned had a significant positive effect on parenting difficulties( =.354) and children's internet use ( =.234). Single-parent's perceived parenting difficulties also had a significant positive effect on children's internet use ( =.440) but a significant negative effect on both parent-child communication( =.192) and positive changes of children( =.218). Interestingly, internet use of children demonstrated a significant negative effect on their positive changes. Second, parent-child communication, parenting difficulties, and children's internet use had a negative mediating effect with the relationship where single-parent's perceived experience of social discrimination had an effect on positive changes of children( =.167). Second, between the family groups based on family incomes, there was no statistically significant difference in the structural relationship. Based on these results, this study presented a practical proposal to help single parents not experience social discrimination and to help decrease the internet use of children to improve positive changes.
