To investigate the stability of temporary retaining walls during excavation, it is essential to develop reverse analysis technologies capable of precisely evaluating the properties of the ground and a learning model that can assess stability by analyzing real-time data. In this study, we targeted excavation sites where the C.I.P method was applied. We developed a Deep Neural Network (DNN) model capable of evaluating the stability of the retaining wall, and estimated the physical properties of the ground being excavated using a Differential Evolution Algorithm. We performed reverse analysis on a model composed of a two-layer ground for the applicability analysis of the Differential Evolution Algorithm. The results from this analysis allowed us to predict the properties of the ground, such as the elastic modulus, cohesion, and internal friction angle, with an accuracy of 97%. We analyzed 30,000 cases to construct the training data for the DNN model. We proposed stability evaluation grades for each assessment factor, including anchor axial force, uneven subsidence, wall displacement, and structural stability of the wall, and trained the data based on these factors. The application analysis of the trained DNN model showed that the model could predict the stability of the retaining wall with an average accuracy of over 94%, considering factors such as the axial force of the anchor, uneven subsidence, displacement of the wall, and structural stability of the wall.
For soft ground, a pile foundation is typically used as a substructure of transmission tower. However, differential settlement between the foundations can cause structural damage of transmission tower. The connected-pile foundation is a type of group foundation consisting of four foundations connected with beams, and it was suggested in USA and Japan. In this study, a series of 1/8 scale model pile tests were performed to investigate the effect of load direction and stiffness of connecting beam on the responses of connected-pile foundation. As a result, the load capacities of the connected-pile foundation were larger than those of the conventional group pile foundation. For example, under the given test conditions in this paper, the resistibility against differential settlement was improved significantly for connected-pile foundation and its efficiency was maximized when the stiffness of connecting beams is about 25% of the mat foundation.

For the soft ground construction, the factors not considered in the design stage occurs in the construction stage so that they cause the increase of the construction cost due to the structural stability and the design change. The subject of the study is the construction section of the industrial complex access road made in the Ochang region of Chungcheongbuk-do. The study is concerned with selecting the soft ground handling method such as the replacement method using rock debris and the surcharge reflecting the service load as the soft ground handling measure and analyzing the effect of reducing the construction cost with the stability of structures and the reduction of the construction period. The soft ground in the study section consists of sandy and cohesive soil and is 2.4m to 5.5m deep. It is distributed unevenly between the 1.5m to 5.9m stratums under the ground surface. Settlement is not serious, but the future uneven settlement and difference are expected so that the future settlement behavior is estimated by analyzing the site measurement results after the soft ground treatment. Moreover, in consideration of the regional characteristics and economic efficiency, soil with good quality is replaced with rock debris as the replacement material so that 29% of the construction cost is reduced due to the increase of stability and the reduction of duration. If the estimation of the dispersion of the pore water pressure within the dam body and the change of the underground water level and the relation of the actually measured soft ground with consolidation is studied further on the basis of the study, it is expected that the behavior of the soft ground will be correctly estimated in various site conditions.
Recently, engineering problems such as long-term settlement, differential settlement, and the resultant structural damage, have been frequently reported at construction sites. Use of Sand Compaction Piles(SCP) and Granular Compaction Piles(GCP) are good at remedying existing problems, improving bearing capacity and promoting consolidation. However, such compaction piles have the potential for clogging, which would limit their usability. Investigations into the potential for clogging in SCP, GCP, and GCP mixed with sand has not been thoroughly conducted and is the objective of this current study. Large scale direct shear tests were performed on sections of SCP, GCP, and sand mixed GCP to evaluate bearing capacity. Discrete Element Method analyses were conducted with PFC3D and Finite Element Analyses were conducted with MIDAS GTS to propose an algorithm to help reduce clogging in the granular compaction piles. Results from the large scale direct shear test and multiple simulations suggest a 70% gravel and 30% sand mixing ratio to be optimal for bearing capacity and reducing clogging.
The reinforced soil retaining wall structures of serious types with environmental are widely expanding more and more in Korea, which divided conventional type's reinforced soil retaining wall on segmental retaining wall. The causes of most crack occurred at block in reinforced soil retaining wall structure caused by the differential settlement of foundation. It is difference of settlement for significant factor that with overall slope stability. In this study, design assessment of foundation bearing capacity related to differential settlement of foundation ground was considered. And, also, through case study, the countermeasure methods and its application were suggested that the bearing capacity of foundation had to stabilize. The foundation ground in charge of bearing capacity should be affected by the resisting force of sliding, because the foundation parts of reinforced soil retaining wall were belongs to potential slope sliding area in overall stabilizing including retaining wall structures. Therefore, the analyzing or the designing of bearing capacity for foundation should be considered control capacity on the overall slope sliding.

In high-rise buildings, an outrigger system is frequently used as a resisting system for lateral loads. Since the outriggers tie exterior columns and an interior core, exterior columns can participate in the lateral load resisting system and the structural resistance capacity can be increased. However, the outriggers contribute for controlling gravity loads as well as lateral loads. The flows of gravity loads can be changed by the members of outriggers, for the purposes of transferring loads to mega-columns, distributing gravity loads equally among vertical members of columns, walls, or piles, minimizing differential settlements in a foundation system, and so on. In this study, by computational structural analyses of high-rise buildings over 100 floors, the effects of outriggers on controlling gravity loads are analyzed. Analyses for 3-dimensional models with or without outrigger members are performed, and then the gravity load distributions in columns and piles and foundation settlements are analyzed. Also, the effects of outriggers on gravity load controls during construction stages as well as after construction are included.
Recently, domestic waste landfills are constructed sometimes on seashore area to provide large landfill area. In order to strengthen the foundation of landfills and to prevent the infiltration of leachate through the bottom, many cases of constructing cement hardened liners on seashore clays are found. In these cases, it is possible to have cracks in the hardened liners due to settlement with waste load since the stiffness of the hardened liner Is greater than that of clay liners. In this study, the capability of Self-Sealing and Self-Healing (SSSH) liner made with a seashore clay in the metropolitan landfill to prevent the percolation of water and leachate is examined using flexible-wall permeameter test and using uniaxial compression test. Applicability of SSSH to weathered granitic soil is also examined for self-sealing capabilities. The result of Flexible permeameter test for SSSH with the seashore clay showed that permeability obtained was lower than permeability criteria of Korean waste management law. The permeability and strength characteristics of SSSH with granitic soil and bentonite showed better results than with the seashore clay.
Recently, the high speed railway comes into the spotlight as the important and convenient traffic infrastructure. In Korea, Kyung-Bu high speed train service began in bout 400 km section in 2004, and the Ho-Nam high speed railway will be constructed by 2017. The high speed train will run with a design maximum speed of 300-350 km/hr. Since the trains are operated at high speed, the differential settlement of subgrade under the rail is able to cause a fatal disaster. Therefore, the differential settlement of the embankment must be controlled with the greatest care. Furthermore, the characteristics and causes of settlements which occurred under construction and post-construction should be investigated. A considerable number of studies have been conducted on the settlement of the natural ground over the past several decades. But little attention has been given to the compression settlement of the embankment. The long-term settlement of compacted fills embankments is greatly influenced by the post-construction wetting. This is called 'hydro collapse' or 'wetting collapse'. In spite of little study for this wetting collapse problem, it has been recognized that the compressibility of compacted sands, gravels and rockfills exhibit low compressibility at low pressures, but there can be significant compression at high pressures due to grain crushing (Marachi et al. 1969, Nobari and Duncan 1972, Noorany et al. 1994, Houston et al. 1993, Wu 2004). The characteristics of compression of fill materials depend on a number of factors such as soil/rock type, as-compacted moisture, density, stress level and wetting condition. Because of the complexity of these factors, it is not easy to predict quantitatively the amount of compression without extensive tests. Therefore, in this research I carried out the wetting collapse tests, focusing on various soil/rock type, stress levels, wetting condition more closely.
In the present study damage behavior of resilient sleepers on concrete ballasts is analyzed. Cracks of resilient sleepers in a railway track system are concentrated on inside of blocks to which the tie bars are connected. Finite element analysis is performed by dividing a block into the straight section and the curved section according to the load condition of the resilient sleeper, and limited the interpretation within the range of resilience. In addition, the value of stress obtained from the interpretation was compared with the allowable stress of concrete to determine the safety. According to the result of numerical analysis, compared with the stress before unequal settlement, the tensile stress of the inside of the block increased significantly after the settlement considering the entire block, and the tensile stress of this part exceeded the allowable stress of concrete, so was undesirable in terms of safety. In reality, the arrangement of tensile stiffeners inside blocks connected to tie bars is improper in the design of resilient sleepers, and when unequal settlement occurs, tensile stress increases on this part and consequently causes cracking damage. It is necessary to arrange wire meshes or tensile reinforcing bars in a structurally safe way to reinforce the inside of blocks on which cracks are concentrated.
