With the continuing demand for lightweight bicycles, carbon fiber composite materials have been widely used in manufacturing bicycle frames and components. Unlike general isotropic materials, the structural characteristics of composite materials are strongly influenced by the staking directions and sequences of composite laminates. Thus, to verify the design process of bicycles manufactured using composites, structural analysis is considered essential. In this study, a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) bicycle frame was designed and its structural behavior was investigated using finite element analysis (FEA). By measuring the failure indices of the fiber and matrix under various stacking sequences and loading conditions, the effect of the stacking condition of composite laminates on the strength of the bicycle structure was examined. In addition, the structural safety of the bicycle frame can be enhanced by reinforcing weak regions prone to failure using additional composite laminates.
In this paper low-velocity impact response and damage of composite laminates is analytically investigated. A modified displacement field of plate considering initially loaded in-plane strain is proposed. From the displacement field a finite element equation on structural behavior of composite laminate is newly induced and a computational program is coded. Numerical results using the FEM code is compared with the numerical ones from reference. Additional numerical analysis is performed on another impact condition and effect of initial in-plane load is reviewed. Potential delamination damage area in the first inter-ply surface from bottom of laminate is approximated and effect of initial in-plane load and impact condition is also reviewed.

In the composite case, the first ply failure is considered total failure of the case. When the case is constructed by filament winding over a metal liner, the first ply failure does not necessarily mean total failure of the case. In this study, we compared the results through finite element analysis and burst test to predict the burst pressure of the hybrid case (filament-wound composite case with metal liner). Through it predicts the burst pressure of the hybrid case, we can determine the thickness of the metal liner and composite.
This study performed a nonlinear finite element crash analysis of guardrail structures using supports made of composite materials. In this study, we used a new [0/90/90/0] laminated Boron fiber composite for resisting the crash effects. Based on the improved ground-structure interaction model, appropriate ground properties to the support were determined. In particular, the complex crash mechanism of guardrails was studied using various parameters. The parametric studies are focused on the various effects of car crash on the structural performance and thickness of supports. The numerical results for various parameters are verified by comparing those using existing steel materials.

In this study, computational rotor dynamic analyses of a composite roller used for large LCD panel manufacturing process have been conducted. The present computational method is based on the general finite element method with rotating gyroscopic effects of rotor systems. General purpose commercial finite element code, SAMCEF which has special rotordynamics analysis module is applied. For the purpose of numerical verification, comparison study for a benchmark dual rotor model with support bearings is also presented. Detailed finite element models for composite roller with optimized lamination angles are constructed and analyzed considering gravity effect in order to investigate vibration characteristics in actual operation environment. As results of the present study, rotor stability diagrams and mass unbalance responses are presented for different rotating conditions.
In this work, the structural response of thin-walled, composite beams with built-in twist angles is analyzed using a mixed beam approach. The analytical model includes the effects of elastic couplings, shell wall thickness, and torsion warping. Reissner's semi-complimentary energy functional is used to describe the beam theory and also to deal with the mixed-nature in the beam kinematics. The bending and torsion related warpings introduced by the non-zero pretwist angles are derived in closed-form through the proposed beam formulation. The theory is validated with available literature and detailed finite element analysis results for rectangular solid section beams with elastic couplings. Very good correlation has been obtained for the cases considered.

Tape-wrapped structures have been generally used in nozzle parts of guided missiles. A continuous band of woven composite material is wrapped around a mandrel that is designed to produce real products. After going through a vacuum bagging process, this woven composite material is cured in a high-pressure autoclave or hydroclave. However, tape-wrapped structures are difficult to analyze because of its large thickness and inclined lay-up. The present study investigates the method of analysis and failure prediction of tape-wrapped structures. The four-point bending test and its finite element analysis were performed to study how to model tape-wrapped structures and investigate their failure characteristics.
There has been a continuous study on the weight reduction of structure by composites. Unlike isotropic materials, the physical properties of composites vary according to the direction of laminate and the order of lamination. Therefore, in the case of composite ladders, it is essential to perform structural analysis to verify the planned design. In this study, ladder was designed by applying fabric material. In addition, the effect of loading position on the ladder was analyzed through finite element analysis, and structural performance was analyzed by selecting the most problematic location. We analyzed the effect of stacking order on the structural strength of the ladder by analyzing the structure by applying various stacking sequence and measuring the failure value in each layer.
This paper describes the results of experiments to analyze the free vibration of the laminated composite and hybrid composite plates with various shapes and boundary conditions. The materials of specimens were the carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP), the glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP), the GFRP-Aluminum hybrid composite and the CFRP-CFRP hybrid composite. The natural frequencies and nodal patterns of plates with various shapes were experimentally obtained by impact exciting test using an impact hammer and an accelerometer. The experimental results were presented with normalized frequency parameters. The effects of composite material properties, fiber orientation angles, various geometrical shapes and boundary conditions on the vibration characteristics of composite plates were evaluated. To compare and verify these experimental results, the finite element analysis was carried out, and was well agreed with experimental results.
